As I opt to periodically do - when I have no other viable or unviable ideas - it's time to pull up an old Billboard magazine Hot 100 chart and note the songs that debuted that week. I nicked the concept from Chris at 702s Music Mayhem who uses the format with far greater attention to detail as he works his way through the '70s. The first few years of the '80s was when pop radio provided much of the music for me and Casey Kasem's [...]

Random lines from Joesph Heller's Catch-22 keep popping into my head. It makes sense that I have kinship with Yossaran, the protagonist of Heller's masterpiece, as work has been a serious mash-up of Catch-22 with a twist of Lord Of The Flies . I used to keep a dog-eared copy of Catch-22 by my bed. It was the go-to when I just wanted to grab something and be entertained. (surprisingly, the inexplicable logic of those in charge at the heart of the novel is more whimsical to read [...]

Last summer, I noted that I'd watched Major League Baseball's All-Star game for the first time in years. This summer, I mostly ignored the game again. I watched a bit of the home run derby competition (and what I watched was uneventful). I spent most of the time trying to figure out if David Ortiz had actually gotten busted for performance-enhancing drugs, if he had been investigated for such hijinks, or if there had merely been rumors. (that grew wearying and I lost interest in the contest) I [...]

Like grim death it does. No sleeping past six. No lounging on the couch nursing an extra cup of coffee. No plotting out whether to take that nap after breakfast or hold off 'til after lunch. As a kid, the weekend essentially ended the moment that I heard that stopwatch ticking to open 60 Minutes . As my parents settled in to watch the weekly news program, I knew that the clock had run out on my weekend. In college, the transition from Sunday to Monday was far less jarring. Monday [...]

Although he hailed from Baltimore, singer/songwriter Greg Kihn found his way to San Francisco in the mid-70s, becoming a part of that city's rich pop music history. Strongly influenced by '60s guitar pop, Kihn became a successful local act during the late '70s with his band, embraced by fans for his straight-forward style of power pop. By 1981, Kihn and his band had released half a dozen albums, each one selling better than the previous, but he had yet to break out on a national scale. That changed with Rockihnroll , lucky album number seven, when it [...]

Well Hello there Folks. I am back to bring you another edition of the Wednesday Rewind. Today we feature four tracks that have to do with Television and The Arcade. These aren't just regular songs, all four of these babies are on the Billboard top 100 for their year. (Sad!) The first and worst of the four is the song "Greatest American Hero." This was a theme song to a show by the same name, and apparently the premise of the show is that a man is given a suit by aliens. This suit gives him special powers. [...]
