Although music might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you mention "Canadian prairies," Manitoba has had some pretty excellent musical exports. Especially as of late. This province is the home of the Weakerthans, Imaginary Cities, Les Jupes, Ash Koley, and Greg MacPherson. Don't forget that this province was the launching point for Neil Young, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and The Guess Who. Personally, Imaginary Cities is one of my favorite up-and-comers out of this year's SXSW. MP3 "Hummingbird" from Imaginary Cities Download audio file (hummingbird.mp3) [...]

1. The Dirty Diamonds - Where Are the Words? - What is this, 1989? New, old, odd, even. Sounds like old birthday candy, saved for just the proper occasion. [from Monster Ballads EP | free! ] 2. Greg MacPherson - Visitor - This slow-burner closes Greg's album of broken dreams and open roads. A song of contemplation, hypnotism by white lines, red brake lights smeared through rain-spackled windglass. Maybe the most important thing about the destination is the journey. [from Mr. Invitation |buy on iTunes or Amazon ] [...]

A lot of jokes involve Canada (and we've perpetuated a lot of those stereotypes here at CoS). But if there's one thing our neighbors to the north do well, it's honor their best and brightest musicians with the Polaris Prize . And that they'll do come September 20th in Toronto. As of now, however, 40 acts and their must-hear albums have been announced, but that list will get leaner by next month. According to the Montreal Gazette , the 2010 award honors albums released from June 1st, 2009 to May [...]

For artists like Octoberman , travel tales are often introspective and hushed. The free time and solitude that makes up a denizen's day often dictates the end result of their art. Winnipeg native Greg MacPherson goes the other route. The opening single to his new record - Mr. Invitation - explodes into a muscular riff that heightens the intensity of his voyages. He reminds us about those first few exciting days of a trip when everything seems new, not the days that blend together as you wait for trains or fill long days [...]

It's hardly revelatory to say that certain bands get more exposure than they deserve. It's also hardly revelatory to say the reverse is true. Some bands have bad management, too little drive, too niche a sound, or miriad other factors that contribute to them not getting noticed by as wide an audience as (I feel) they should get. This column, and other similarly titled ventures in the future, will aim to rectify this somewhat. I'm not aiming to be wilfully obscure with my selections, as I also think some bands don't get exposure because they are fucking terrible. I think [...]

Greg Mcpherson has a delivery like Richard Thompson/Loudon Wainwright and a battering acoustic guitar style of Billy Bragg. Greg is a Canadian singer/songwriter who is releasing his first/next album, Sun Beats Down , in Europe through Play/Rec Records in Holland. The sound on the album varies as it has your typical acoustic guitar based songs ("Good Times") and also songs with a more electric edge ("Cutting Room"). The harshly ironic "Good Times" is the clear socio-political track from the record. Sun Beats Down came out on [...]
