Click here to view the embedded video. This video was just recorded last week, and well, I just love this version of Isakov's "That Moon Song," as if it weren't a gorgeous enough song, this recording really does it great justice. If you don't already own it, I highly suggest buying his album, This Empty Northern Hemisphere . He's a fantastic songwriter, and I'm hearing rumors of a new album out in October of this year.
Gregory Alan Isakov Appearing at The Record Bar (Kansas City, MO) on Friday, May 18, 2012

Back in December 2011, I featured a write-up on Gregory Alan Isakov , a singer-songwriter based in Colorado who I had recently started listening to. At the time, I had fallen in love with his songs " Big Black Car " and " Master and a Hound ," and even though I had purchased all of his albums, these two songs played on repeat in my car for the majority of my holiday break. Since then, I have had the chance to listen to his [...]

The Brazilian waxes Poetic // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
This happened tonight not far from my home in Colorado. Gregory Alan Isakov is a state treasure, and I am a sucker for Springsteen covers that make me take in my breath sharply when I really should be sleeping.

Gregory Alan Isakov , a Colorado-based singer-songwriter originally from South Africa, has been playing on repeat on my Ipod recently. His four full-length albums released between 2003 and 2009 are impressive, having gained him two musical awards and a spot at numerous festivals including South by South West and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Having had the privilege to play alongside bands such as Mumford and Sons, Brandi Carlile, Fiona Apple, and Alexi Murdoch, Gregory Alan Isakov has successfully established himself as a talented artist worth listening to. If you are a fan of indie/folk music, [...]
Download: Hey Rosetta! - "Bandages" I feel like I've been rather late to the party with Hey Rosetta! having only been listening to them for a month or so. "Bandages" was my toe in the water with these Canadians, I caught the live video and instantly jumped on the Hey Rosetta! bandwagon...Hey Rosetta! are magical. [...]

The inkling I got from his stage presence at Thursday night's performance at Union Transfer was confirmed by my phone interview with him the following Sunday afternoon— Gregory Alan Isakov's demeanor is just as sweet and unassuming as his music. Isakov, who combines lush guitar chords with tender cello harmonies, the soft strum of the banjo, and the occasional longing strains of the harmonica, easily finds his place among the ranks of indie folk greats. Inspired by his parents' "awesome music collection" and a number of folk festivals on the East coast that he attended [...]

I am kind of having a Gregory Alan Isakov moment. Okay, I am fully having a moment. Always been a fan of this guy ( why isn't he famous anyway ) and after receiving my vinyl copy of "That Empty Northern Hemisphere", I just can't get enough. God damn...the combination of his voice and perfect harmonies is almost overwhelming at times. He has pitch perfect delivery to go alongside his ever pining acoustic ballads - even if they aren't all really ballads per se. I thought you all needed to be immersed [...]

Benjamin Francis Leftwich is taking over my "Recently Played" smart playlist. The kid from Yorkshire is truly something special. If you took William Fitzsimmons and Jose Gonzalez , added a touch of John Mayer , mixed it all together and presented it to the world- You might be able to concoct an artist for the masses that is on Ben's level. His debut album Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm comes out next monday (July 4th), but luckily for us he let loose an album sampler a few days ago. I've [...]

Before we begin, I have some news about The Indie Sabbath . As you should know by now, the southern part of the United States has been ravaged over the past few weeks by violent thunderstorms, tornadoes and massive flooding. The scale of the disaster is incredible, and the people living in those areas are suffering in a way most of us can't even fathom. Starting Monday the 16th, I am going to be traveling to Missouri to help with the relief effort. This is going to be a physically draining experience as I will [...]

Gregory Alan Isakov is an artist whose work, until now, has sadly passed me by – the man himself is touring the UK during June and I've been lucky enough to receive a promo copy of his last album The Empty Northern Hemisphere after the first listen it appears I have some catching up to do on Mr Isakov's back catalogue , Rust Colored Stones (2003), Songs For October (2005) and That Sea, The Gambler (2009). I reached for the CD needing some music to kick back and listen [...]

I'm taking a deep breath as I post this. It may be one of the last before I launch myself into festival season here in Colorado. There are a lot of amazing things coming up, but this one starts it all off. For two days (May 6th and 7th), Boulder becomes home to the Pearl Street Music and Arts Festival . Boulder is what most people picture when they think of Colorado- a small town feel with gorgeous mountain views. In the heart lies Pearl Street, which is packed with [...]

Photo by Jason Nocito Sure, Beach House 's Teen Dream is—like the band's previous efforts—an excellent atmospheric album to play in the background while sitting around your living room and having a discussion about how, like, you're totally over bands that make atmospheric background music. But how does it hold up in a live setting, where—instead of lounging around on your comfy couch and only kind-of listening to the band's lo-fi dream-pop—you're expected to stand on your own two feet and pay close attention for the full duration of the performance? The jury [...]
Since I missed last weeks pick of the week feature due to the Super Bowl, I am including those tracks here, so it's definitely packed this week. You'll notice the first track is an Atmosphere track. They have just announced a new album release date as well as an extended tour , so definitely give those links a look as they are always pumping out quality tunes. Minnesota Nice- Atmosphere (ft. Prof, Felipe Cuauhtli & Gene Poole) Lou Diamond- Big Quarters [...]
