Greetings. It gives us great pleasure to introduce you to our second Halfway House Music Podcast . Once again we are joined by Halfway House Sessions Audio Engineer – the always affable Peter Fox from Stone House Recording . During this episode of music and babbling nonsense we focus on the Halfway House Sessions . If you aren't familiar with our sessions here's the d.l.: Bands come in and record three tracks LIVE @ Stone House Recording . We record the audio/video [...]

Art credit: Terra Schneider, Maddie Rosemurgy Music is inherently and intrinsically weaved into my life. Virtually everything I do, day in and day out, has a meticulously-chosen soundtrack. My guess, dear reader, is that we share this quality. For many years, I chose my music based on a single facet, be it lyrics, vocals, intricacy, simplicity, or whatever else delighted me at the time. I would study this quality, taking in as much as I could, until that artist or genre was exhausted for me, then I'd move on. As my tastes matured, however, this method [...]

A Quick Word from the Author: Firstly, apoplogies for the absence of the Sabbath this past Thursday. I've been at a Family Reunion and my Brother's graduation, so I was staying as far away from work as possible -- and on that note, congrats to all the high school grads reading this. It's also worth noting this is not the only Indie Sabbath this week - you'll get your regular does on Thursday again. As I mentioned last week, EARMILK is currently in the gradual and delicate process of refining our features, aiming to [...]

I consider it a tragedy that I don’t get to see Jenny Owen Youngs play every weekend. Last week, I wrote about how we took a road trip to Cambridge, MA to see her play at the Middle East . Well this week she was back home, playing a packed show at the Mercury Lounge in Manhattan. Gregory and the Hawk opened the show, and she was absolutely lovely. With her wispy vocals and sweet guitar, Meredith Godreau had the already packed room enamored with her. [...]
Gregory and The Hawk is a band you may have heard of. Consisting of Meredith Godreau and no hawk or Gregory, she makes indie pop under the aforementioned pseudonym, with her last release being the album Leche . m∞n on the other hand, may be a little new to you. He's a hip-hop producer making abstract sample based hip-hop and he did a nice job of flipping Gregory and The Hawk's folk-rocky "Landscapes" and turns it into a hip-hop song with enough change in pitch that it sounds like there indeed may be a Gregory involved in the process. [...]

It's certainly nice when one is soaking wet from the heavy downpour outdoors to go underground in a warm and friendly place such as Cafe du Nord and find a cute-as-a-button folk singer crooning softly, trading an acoustic guitar with a harp (!) for good effect. It helps warm cold limbs anyhow. This was [...]

Tweet Sometimes Noise Pop Festival lineups aren't necessarily about Noise Pop as an entity. In fact, my very first Noise Pop show was in 2007, and I wasn't even aware that the Noise Pop Festival had been going on for years - I just wanted to see Spinto Band. And I did. And it was fun. Day 3 of Noise Pop 2011 featured Film School, Apex Manor, Gregory and the Hawk, and Melted Toys at Cafe du Nord . Stylistically, you can [...]
Gregory and the Hawk , aka songbird Meredith Godreau, have embarked on a brief solo tour this week in support of her most recent album, last fall's acclaimed "Leche." The NY-based musician will kick off the run of shows in Los Angeles supporting Jenny O. and Harper Simon at the Bootleg Theater on February 21 before heading to San Francisco for Noise Pop 2011 where she will share a bill at Cafe du Nord with Film School and Apex Manor. Godreau will then head to Seattle for a gig with a solo Ted Leo at the University of Washington on [...]

As per tradition (if something can be called a tradition if you've only done it once before...) here's my list of the top songs of 2010. Well, it's something of a misnomer, to be honest, as most of my favourite songs of the year have already featured in my Top 10 Albums post, so this is an opportunity to recognise the impressive efforts of those bands who weren't eligible for inclusion on that list. Some of these are good tracks from otherwise bad albums, others from records that only missed out by the skin of their teeth, and yet more [...]
To the uninitiated pressing play on a Gregory and The Hawk album and hearing the beautiful serenading of Meredith Godreau may come as a surprise. This deliberately cloudy moniker is designed to avoid being pigeonholed in the "female singer/songwriter" bin. It would therefore be lazy reviewing to say 'Leche' sounds like Emiliana Torrini recorded underwater, or that it is as endearing as [...]

Meredith Godreau originally coined the pseudonym Gregory and the Hawk back in 2003 to avoid being pigeonholed as a female singer-songwriter. It’s a justifiable concern – women who pen relaxed acoustic material are all too often lumped together in a deceiving act of lazy journalism. However, although her third studio album Leche proves Gregory and the Hawk is worthy of praise, it lacks the unique content we’ve come to expect from Godreau following 2007’s In Your Dreams and 2008’s Moenie and Kitchi . Initially it seems the album relies on Godreau’s vocal [...]

The story of Gregory & the Hawk is cool, rare, and shows the potential that the internet holds. Imagine that you record a few songs and put them up on Myspace to stream and sell them. No big deal right? Back in the early to mid 20002s that is what everyone and their mother was doing. Except all of those people didn't sell 15,000 albums and have over 100 videos on YouTube of people playing covers of her songs. Oh, and Gregory & the Hawk was completely independent when that happened. [...]

Annie Racz I liked Gregory & The Hawk's last record, 20082s Moenie & Kitchi . Really, I did. The combination of New Yorker Meredith Godreau's sweet, girlish voice and her gentle, mostly-acoustic, semi-orchestral folk-pop is like kryptonite to me and maybe that's why I was able to resist it - it's the sort of record I've bought a dozen times before and while it's not a style that I'm necessarily tired of, it is one that requires some above and beyond to really impress me. Which is why, [...]
