photo: Minneapolis band Greycoats suffer from military fetishism. Dressing up as soldiers they promise liberation, revolution and all that. Their music however doesn't put up much of a fight. They want to be big and epic, but they sound like a second hand Coldplay. Only two tracks of their album Setting Fire To The Great Unknown keep you from dozing off - That Great And Terrible Day has the only memorable guitar hooks and Goodbye, Sweet Youth, Goodbye is a showcase for the [...]

[A very diverse appetizer plate for your ears ...] Minneapolis quartet Greycoats self-released their debut "Setting Fire to the Great Unknown" last month. Their single "Goodbye, Sweet Youth, Goodbye" is a lovely astral anthem that with a little bit of everything, sweet harmonies, subtle effects and a sense of yearning. Greycoats play the Alterknit Lounge tonight. ||| Download: "Goodbye, Sweet Youth, Goodbye" The first single [...]

[Happy Cinco de Mayo, and here are a few musical party options;] Iglu & Hartly , the Los Angeles-via-Colorado quintet who hit it big in the U.K. with its party-minded amalgamation of rock, rap (lite) and cheesy synths, brings its dance show back to the U.S. in earnest, playing a KROQ-sponsored record release show at the Roxy for its debut "And Then Boom" (out today). It's the kind of music that sends indie purists running for cover, but the band is poised to be one of the city's [...]

Every once in a while there will come a band that sounds pretty much exactly like their band name suggests ( Holy Fuck comes to mind) and Greycoats are exactly that. The quintet hones its talent for bombastic atmospheric rock, yet still preserves their edge of unpredictability. The band generally comes close to space rock bands like Failure and Oceansize yet set themselves apart by creating a sound that is truly unique, which isn't an easy feat to tackle. If their latest album, Setting Fire to [...]
We've got another pair of tickets to give away to another excellent show coming up next Saturday (May 9th). This one is at the High Dive and features four really great bands: The Sea Navy, Man Plus, The Dimes and Greycoats. read more

Jeez, when you have a ton of music sent to you by some very talented people, where do you start? Seems these fine folks just want you to hear their music and really don't care about anyone having legal issues with it. That's not only pretty cool but a big relief, because if this blog has to go from music to cooking or gardening I'm in deep shit. • • • • First up is a band called Basement Band. A couple of buddies-Jeff Malinowski (guitar, vocals) and John Durgee (drums, vocals)-loaded [...]

Being categorized with bands like Coldplay and The Fray is not always seen as a positive thing in the indie scene, but those are the comparisons that first came to me when listening through Greycoats' fine debut album, Setting Fire to the Great Unknown. I find the band's music to be remarkably compelling and thoroughly enjoyable - and though their closest cousins (musically speaking, of course) might incite less than ecstatic responses from some, singer Jon Reine and company deserve your attention. Combining the aforementioned influences with touches of Radiohead, U2, and Sigur Ros - Greycoats' [...]

The Greycoats are a hard working Minneapolis quartet that has played with We Are Scientists, Parachutes, Foals, and other bigger bands. Now they are out in support of their debut LP, Setting Fire To The Great Unknown . Everyone is calling them "anglophile" but I'm just hearing indie here, folks. It's a nice, mellow, modern sound - lyrically interesting with themes of lost love and nostalgia and loneliness. Jon Reine's falsetto is sweetly, impossibly high and engaging. Sometimes PR companies have a certain knack for giving you the song [...]

Editor’s Note: Jon Reine is a wonderfully charming, animated, and descriptive person, and so this interview has been shortened in certain segments to maintain specific clarity. Schwaz: The band Greycoats was once called North, right? Jon: Yep! Schwaz: Did you guys initially get together and start up the band here in Minnesota, or somewhere else prior? Jon: Yeah, we [...]
It was a cold and rainy March evening in the Twin Cities where glassy reflecting pools made for poor driving conditions. Yet there were those who had decided early on that the 7th Street Entry was offering a night worth braving, and they gradually filed in one after another as the hour struck nine. For [...]

From the revolution-toned language of their website and press kit, it seems that the "Great Leaders" of the Greycoats are mobilizing a grassroots army to invade your hearts and ears. They already infiltrated television in January by having "Watchman, What Is Left of the Night?" featured on Gossip Girl. Resistance may, indeed, be futile. But when you listen to Setting Fire to the Great Unknown , their self-released debut full-length, you find the 11 tracks are more battle-weary than battle-ready. For me, whose coming of age soundtrack consisted of war protest songs, [...]
