Blazing trails in music these days isn't just about coming up with something catchy or original. Right now, in the world of sonic words, it's all about how many responsibilities an artist can take on at once. If you're a great musician who can manage and produce all at the same time, even better! The industry has a job for you! Most of the time, though, artists who can pull off that kind of juggling act don't want to have anything to do with the tumor that is the corporate music world. Most want to be independent of [...]

Combining members of Jesu, Godflesh and Isis doesn't exactly sound like a recipe for carefree pop but Greymachine seem to delve to depths of scraping, ragged evil that their divided parts usually touch on only briefly. The entirety of Disconnected wears so leaden on the listener that light seems only a memory by the final strangled chords. Starting off with a taste of shrapnel grit between the teeth, the group only increases the feeling of sinking in glass as the album progresses and by time you're partway through its far too late to look back. There's only but [...]
For awhile now, we've been hyping Greymachine, the new project featuring Aaron Turner of Isis and Fighting with Revolver fame and Justin K. Broadrick from Jesu/Godflesh/Naplam Death. And now their debut album, Disconnected, is streaming in full right here. I actually haven't had a chance to give it a listen yet, but I'm all about anything [...]
Over seven years have gone by since Godflesh disbanded, and as Justin K. Broadrick's Jesu project has long ceased to fill that void, moving further and further away from its post-metal roots into something suspiciously palatable to a wider audience. As such, many of those curmudgeons (myself included) longing for the man's return to [...]

It was only 233 years ago that the church bells first rang out over these great United States to signal our newly-earned independence. To be honest, I do not know what the holiday has in common with rock 'n roll's bastard son, doom metal. However, it's undeniable tha today just happens to be a great day to listen to some slow-burning headbanding epics while you sip your beer, and some of the finest names in underground doom are offering up new MP3s to guarantee you get your dosage of doom amongst the happiness & excitement of the 4th. [...]

I know we have more than a few vinyl purists reading this column, so you'll likely be interested to know that the Aaron Turner / Justin Broadrick collaboration Grey Machine (which we first told you about back in September) just released a 123 single for "Vultures Descend" via beardo metal specialists Hydra Head Records. by Cosmo Lee Of Justin Broadrick's many identities - metal, ambient, industrial, hip-hop, to name a few - drum 'n' bass is particularly dear to me, since I was a dnb DJ for six years. (Godflesh was the only metal I listened to during that time.) Love and Hate in Dub and Broadrick's Krackhead project warped dnb into strange shapes, but he also tried his hand at straightforward DJ 12"s in the late 90's/early 00's. Locate feat. Youpho [...]

Does Justin Broadrick ever fucking sleep? It would be impressive enough that the guy puts out more music in a single year than most artists do in a five, but even more incredible is that pretty much all of it is awesome. It must just be in the dude's DNA to make great music. Broadrick's latest [...]
