At first I thought this was the band that The Pains of Being Pure At Heart had mentioned in their interview with Kip , but then I realized *that* was Ringo Deathstar. So apparently, plays on Ringo Starr's name are really popular with bands right now. Gringo Star hail from Atlanta, GA. The band consist of brothers Nick and Pete Furgiuele, along with Pete DeLorenzo and Matt McCalvin. They make good, old-fashioned rock n' roll, and damned if I can't avoid the obvious comparisons between lead singer Pete's voice and that of [...]
A Fir-Ju Well 's Absolutely was one of the first records from a local group (not counting Outkast ) that I got really obsessed with. It is such an amazing album. But ever since releasing it in 2004, 4 years have passed, they changed their name, and I'm still waiting for the full-length follow up. But it seems the wait is almost over as they are currently mixing the new LP. Since I don't know much more about it then that, here is their 2008 single "All Y'all" and some live videos to enjoy while we wait: [...]

Atlanta's Gringo Star are touring the US, the UK, and Mexico. I've been a big fan of these guys since they were called A Fir- Ju Well . If you're unfamiliar with them, they are sort of '60s-style psych-rock 4-piece who all switch instruments and share vocals from song to song. If you are in any of these cities, you should check them out: Oct 7 Trophys Austin, Texas Oct 8 The Cavern Dallas, Texas Oct 9 Rock Bottom San Antonio, Texas Oct 10 O2 Lounge El [...]

Gringo Star used to be A Fir-Ju Well, one of Atlanta's most dependable straight-up rock acts and that tradition continues on in Gringo Star. In fact, Gringo Star is probably the best things these guys have ever done. The name is a little silly and all, but this is quality power pop, though that term is probably a little confining for what Gringo Star does. Sure, there's Badfinger, Big Star, the Kinks, the Animals, the Faces...all the greats are represented here with a distinctly Southern (and slightly Western and Spanish at times) flair. Add a touch of psych, and [...]
(L-R:Hyman Roth (Ex- Silver Jews ), Michael Corleone ( Dartmouth graduate, ex- US Marines )) I had been planning that post on the Dirty Projectors for several days and spent so much time getting my thoughts together about exactly what I wanted to say that I pretty much blew the whole wad this week on that one. I get, literally, exhausted from posts like that. There's an exhilaration, too, that the thoughts are finally out of my [...]

Oh baby, welcome back to MOKB's weekly recap of all that was in the NFL. We'll cross-reference with some indie tunes as usual. I'll try not to burn out in Week 13 or 14 like I did last year. I've been training and eating better, so I feel good about it. New Orleans 10 at Indianapolis 41 What a way to kick it all off! OK, I'm partial to the Colts of course, but how good did they look?! I mean, the defense was equally [...]
I know the vast majority of my readers are folks who are looking for unreleased Clash, Ryan Adams, or whatever, but I also regularly hear from about 100 of you who truly come just for the indie artists. So I know you're out there. This post is for you, the few the proud. Ten artists who came to me through the mailbag. (It's so damn full I just can't post on all these, but I dig 'em so I'm sharing them.) 1. KT Tunstall, the female singer/songwriter behind the brilliant "Eye of the [...]
i am still having a hard time dealing with the recent booting off of sam on bret michaels rock of love. sure, she had a seemingly endless amount of trust issues, was white as a bob barker's hair and had that funky gap tooth but she was cute as hell. meh, he doesnt deserve her [...]

Download: Gringo Star -- "No Reason" I just finished reading Tom Wolfe's novel, "A Man In Full", which is set in Atlanta, GA. It's the first book that I can remember reading that takes place in a city I'm fairly familiar with, and I was surprised how much that changed the way I read. Normally, I must spend a fair amount of energy imagining the places and things the author describes, because this time through I was able to pay much more attention to the nitty gritty aspects of the books creation, like [...]
