Nowhere near as ubiquitous as 1999, When Doves Cry or Kiss or anywhere as dirty as say Darling Nikki , When You Were Mine , by Prince is still a perennial favorite amongst the die-hards and, judging by the small grip of covers today, fellow musicians as well. It's a simple, stellar piece of heartbreak pop that, despite being released in 1980, could have easily been heard coming out of some Detroit jukebox sandwiched somewhere between The Shirelles and The Shangri-Las. Fun fact: this one [...]
Never let it be said that Hugh Platt doesn't rag on all festivals equally. The latest Sonisphere Festival announcement has prompted his irk and ire in equal measure. Even the most casual of internet warriors can't help but have noticed the wave upon wave of negativity that wafted up from the internet last week, like [...]

From Grinspoon's sixth studio album Six To Midnight The album debuted at #4 in the ARIA charts. The first single "Comeback", and the latest single "Summer", have been on high rotation on most major TV & radio stations in Australia. US producer Rick Will (Johnny Cash, No Doubt, Nine In Nails) was behind the albums' production & mixing duties, and, some believe, has delivered one of Grinspoon's finest records to date. The band returned to their so called "spiritua"l home town of [...]
We all know summer means music festivals. We also all hopefully know that Australia celebrates summer when we're battling winter. So it makes senses that with Australia's summer quickly approaching, many of the country's major music events are starting to finalize their 2010 festivities, the first being Big Day Out . For its 18th edition, Australia's largest outdoor music event has tapped the likes of Muse, The Decemberists, The Mars Volta, the newly unretired Lily Allen, Peaches, Rise Against, Mastodon, Kasabian, Dizzee Rascal, Powderfinger, Ladyhawke, the Horrors, and Girl Talk. However, as [...]

hmm...so ol' skool that I even spell it correctly. Haha...anyway, the old school sounds that I'm talking about is the stuff I use to listen to in High School. Stuff like Regurgitator, Jebediah, Something For Kate, the Superjesus etc etc etc. Someone posted up an old 'gurge video on facebook and it got me thinking and reminiscing about it all! So, just for you cats, here's a few youtube videos! First off, it's Harpoon by Jebediah. Something For Kate did a cover of this track and made it really dark! But you can get some of [...]
Now in its 9th year, SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS returns on Sat July 25th and Sun July 26th at Byron Bay's Belongil Fields to present its much anticipated annual mid-winter music celebration. With offerings from around the globe, the 2009 line-up packs a punch with a flock of Splendour first timers, festival favourites and exclusive [...]
Dear Mr Branson, How's Sudan? I heard they got great camel meat. Apparently if you grill it over a spit, and eat it with some of their corn (which I heard is pretty killer too), it's almost as tender as Kobe beef. Serious. Anyways, you're a busy man, so I'll get straight to the point. You see, there's this music festival coming along in January. It's called Big Day Out. Now, usually it's really only two-thirds loyal to its name. Like, it's 100,000-people big, and it lasts the whole day in various Australian and New Zealand [...]
Looking back at my early musical tastes, I was surprised to find that despite being horribly limited, they were also very Australian. Why this happened I have no idea, especially seeing as 90% of the music I listen to these days is international. Thankfully the Australian music scene in the late 90's contained some rather big names and I don't need to be ashamed of my first interests. I'm proud and impressed that I was taping Silverchair off the radio at the age of 9. The list goes beyond these 5 including the likes of Eskimo Joe, The Whitlams and [...]

Triple J Radio is like the Pitchfork of Australia. It's the definitive source on independent music, and it provides the country with music news, reviews, and live music (without the bias that pitchfork often succumbs to). One thing that I really enjoy about the station is their mix CD's, and "Like A Version" are my favorite of these. It's a compilation of cover songs recorded live on air by mostly Australian bands. The songs are consistentally good and most of them you'd never be able to tell they were [...]
