Now that I've wasted so much time here establishing a few traditions, I'd be remiss to honor not them... Almost every artist in the history of mankind has at least one title in their catalog that is a compilation, a stopgap collection meant to maintain interest between releases (often to boost holiday sales) or to fulfill a contractual obligation. This is the former, a chance to make use, one more time, of a lot of wasted time over the past twelve months. Three years ago, I reflected on the annual, childhood tradition of [...]

A couple weeks back, I was poking around for info on the '80s cult movie Straight To Hell and most of what I found also mentioned another '80s cult movie - Repo Man - mentioned. (Alex Cox directed both movies) My friends and I knew of Repo Man in 1984 when it was released and became an instant cult movie and favorite with midnight crowds. We certainly didn't see it at the time, but, surprisingly, as we were living in Sticksville, we were aware of the movie. [...]

Think of them as REM's quirky cousin. Or, don't. If you're of a certain age and spent some time listening to college radio or watching late-night MTV in the '80s, you might remember Guadalcanal Diary's brief incursions into the collective pop consciousness. First with 1984's "Watusi Rodeo," which made the cut for the music network's [...]

Any Major Dude has noted that the search engine terms leading the masses to his blog often involve unrequited or impossible love. Here? It's a lot of folks searching for sleepwear. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, and John Denver (yes, John Denver) are some of the acts with fans wishing to express their allegiance even as they sleep. (Paloma takes this, admittedly, small sample as a sign that we should fulfill this niche and become pajama moguls) The search engine statistics also [...]
Ahhh, so here we go again, still stuck in the 80's. These posts are a relief for me, especially since I get away from posting about personal issues. I can't say it enough but I love the 80's. Always do and always will. Remember, 1981 is the date that these bands were formed. The tracks posted can be a couple of years after that date. Also, this selection is in no way a comprehensive list of bands that were formed in 1981. I am sure that I am missing some important bands. But, this is the [...]
Well, here's something you don't see every day: an artist covering Marietta, Georgia, '80s jangle-twang popsters Guadalcanal Diary. Thanks to Roy for capturing Jason Ringenberg (backed by locals Rough... Continue reading "Video: Jason Ringenberg with Rough Shop, "Trail of Tears" (Guadalcanal Diary) " >

Guadalcanal Diary: Trail Of Tears [ purchase ] 1984 was the year I first heard Jangle Pop . According to AMG, "Jangle Pop was an American post-punk movement of the mid-'80s that marked a return to the chiming guitars and pop melodies of the '60s." That was a perfect recipe for me at the time and I still like it. One of the best examples of Jangle Pop was Guadalcanal Diary from Marietta, Georgia. This song was one of their bigger "hits." [...]
Guadalcanal Diary were the quintessential '80's jangly rock band. Not only were they really jangly, but their music had that wonderful '80s sense of fun. They never got famous (most likely due to their unmarketable name or quirkiness), but they meant a lot to me. If it weren't for Guadalcanal Diary I might never have become such a music-obsessed kid. This would have caused me to receive better grades in college, which in turn would have caused me to miss out on five accomplishment-free post-college years working in bars and record stores while playing the [...]
Ok, let's keep it going. This one here is bands that were born in the year 1981. And has special significance since it features the song, that the blog name came from, by Australia's own Hoodoo Gurus. Tomorrow we move to 1983. Enjoy! mp3 Mars Needs Guitars!
