Photos by G. Richie Follin of Guards On April 26, 2012, New York (via California)'s Guards packed the house at Manhattan's Mercury Lounge. Lead singer Richie Follin is from a very talented family. His sister is Cults lead singer Madeline Follin, but sonically their music is a completely different sound. Self-described as "pop-wave-doom," their hour long set was a lot more rock than it was doom! At times, their songs blended into another which was great as it felt like watching a concept album being performed. [...]

Yes, this was the second time I caught Guards at SXSW 2012. I'd normally try to shy away from spending precious SXSW schedule real estate on a band I've already seen, but all that falls apart when the band's as good as Guards. This show was even more powerful than their previous show I saw [...]

![[SXSW] Floating Fest // Hype Hotel Wrap-Up](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4149485_lg.jpg)
When we teamed up with Hype Machine to present our annual Floating Fest at SXSW 2012 we knew it would be something special... but not until we arrived that Friday night did we realize how true that was. In the midst of Doritos Locos taco stench in one of Austin's coolest venues, amongst a crowd of 850+ attendees, Floating Fest unfolded nearly perfectly (with the exception of Star Slinger who never showed up!). If you missed it or couldn't be there, Livestream set up a nice site where you can check out liveblogged pics [...]

Goodbye SXSW Let's face it: South by Southwest is exhausting. 4 days of 15-hour live music orgies is enough to enervate even the spryest of striplings, particularly when accompanied by a diet composed solely of barley and hops. Our last day at SXSW began on the slow side, with a trip out to legendary BBQ castle Salt Lick , where this particular editor ordered the "all you can eat" plate, and where the FP staff learned that I cannot in fact eat very much. But, while our start was slow, our finish was fast and [...]
This is a very packed picture post. But it's SXSW...what did you expect? So here's a fraction of a fraction of all the musicians, madness, and maniacs from SXSW 2012.

This year was my first year in Austin, Texas for South By Southwest (a.k.a. SXSW). If you've never been, or somehow have never heard of the mutant music explosion that is SXSW, let me tell you what it is. SXSW is watching 10-20 bands a day beginning at 11:00 a.m. until 3 a.m. and then getting up early to do it all over again every day for a week. SXSW is struggling to fight through crowds estimated between 60K-100k people to get from one venue to another. SXSW is quickly devouring questionable food from a food truck in between showcases [...]

If your perfect night out involves dressing in rags and scanning through garbage cans then you may be hearting the GUARDS new video, FEEL LIKE THAT .
Guards' Richie Follin has been in bands long enough to be an absolute pro at performing at SXSW. He delivered basically the ideal SXSW set: tight, powerful and to the point. Even when an alarm went off through the set, Richie just said "can someone turn that off" and kept on going. We got a [...]

Frank Yang Yes, that's right - night zero. The Tuesday night of SXSW used to be a chance to settle in, to catch up with friends, to have a proper meal. And maybe get ripped and pass out. Whatever. The last few years have seen the number of Interactive closing party events grow significantly, and as of last year there were official Music showcases scheduled for the Tuesday; not a lot, but enough to see that the festival was growing yet again - remember when there wasn't much going on on Wednesdays? [...]
The Follin family are a talented bunch, and it feels almost as if they've been charged with keeping indie pop alive. Madeline Follin brings the 60s girl group goodness with her Cults , and her brother, Richie, is beginning to make a name for himself with the irresistible psych-pop jams of Guards . It's time to stop thinking of Richie Follin as Cults ' Madeline Follin's brother, and you may be more inclined to think of him as Guards after watching the video for "Feels Like This," the B-side to "Do It Again." Directed by Andrew Simkiss, Follin's debut video was shot in New York's Chinatown, and finds "Dave Rankin playing a rickety homeless Gene Kelly figure surrounded by similarly grungy back-up dancers," which pairs nicely with Follin's "indie pop banger." This is homeless chic at its finest.

[The South by Southwest Music Festival, now 2,500-plus bands strong and spanning five-plus days, keeps growing and growing — music events started on Tuesday this year. Buzz Bands LA will be covering with "daily diaries." Here's an abbreviated one from what we saw after arriving, already sleep-deprived, in Austin:] @KRBronson on Tuesday at SXSW: Richie James Follin is 28 now, four albums with the Willowz under his belt, along with a solo record that everybody (including himself) [...]

Filed under: News , Monthly Mixtape Flickr What happened to February 2012? It didn't even snow in New York City, which by our calculations is one of the 10 pillars of the apocalypse. And with Rick Santorum nearing the Republican Party presidential nomination, we have retreated within our headphones to wait around for the nuclear fallout. So head down to your basement and unplug from the world around you by checking out these 29 great [...]
