With hardcore Northwesterner's now back from a cold but successful weekend at Treefort Music Fest in Boise, we have a whole week of great new shows to warm you back in Seattle. On Monday night, we welcome Iris DeMent at The Triple Door, and then on Tuesday we have an exciting night out with Duff McKagan's It's So Easy and Other Lies, A Punk's Revue at the Moore Theatre, Major Lazer, Angel Haze, and Lunice are at Showbox SoDo, and Doldrums and Sean Nicholas Savage are downstairs at Barboza. More surprises on Wednesday [...]

Photos and words by Debi Del Grande Spunky, guitar-shredding, vocalist Ritzy Bryan may go fucking mad driving on the 405 like the rest of us, but that madness was unleashed at The Fonda as everyone was out of their cars and moving to the trio's latest Wolf's Law . The constant interaction between Bryan, Rhydian Dafydd (bass, backing vox, keys) and Matt Thomas (percussion and wearing stylish sneakers this time around) and the fans kept the energy level high the entire night. I always feel like I can have a shot of whiskey with this [...]
Here is another lovely week to be a bay area resident. Please go to a show or 20! Thursday, March 21st Rudimental, Charlotte Church, Kidnap Kid at Rickshaw Stop Remember 1998? There was a 12 year old singer that had a pretty monsterous hit record of lite classical music that took the world by storm. Richie Follin – founder of punk rock band the Willowz, former member of Cults, and now singer in New York ‘60s and ‘70s revivalists Guards – lived near Cow Hollow in San Francisco for six years, up through the sixth grade, and attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School. A self-described hooligan, he “got in trouble all over” town, and eventually landed at the Salesian Boys and Girls Club, meant to right the course of young delinquents. “I feel like pretty much everyone who ever went there – it’s only a matter [...]

Friday began with a bus ride downtown, on which there were NO 20-year-olds talking about the Snoop Dogg/Snoop Lion controversy, so I fear that I'll never get to the bottom of that for you. I'd really like to spend some time going on a rant about music 'fans' who just come to sxsw to see the biggest act possible, and wait in line for 8 hours in the process. There are a million places to do that - mainly the zillion festivals that those bands play each year - but sxsw should be about new/undiscovered bands. [...]

Yesterday was not a great day. It is the little things sometimes. Things like when you wake up and realise that despite knowing I was away for 10 days in total, I had only bought clothes for 8 (except t-shirts which bizarrely could last me for 13) and the suncream tube is actually some kind of foaming face wash. Or all the eggs have gone at breakfast meaning as a non-meat eater the sausages and bacon are not great substitutes. And then some crappy news from work, and by the time all is sorted I am [...]
While my fellow bloggers and all-around music loving nerds are spending spring break in good 'ol Austin, Texas for South By Southwest this week, some of us left behind in the cold, slushy weather are likely seething with jealousy. To warm us over and giving us something to look forward to, the good people at Osheaga released (after a [...]

If you haven't heard of Guards by now, it won't be long before they become a household name. Led by Richie Follin (brother of Madeline of Cults ), the band creates a signature blend of expansive, unbelievably catchy rock mixed with 602s jangle pop. Their debut album, In Guards We Trust , is full of summer jams, singalong choruses, and fuzzed-out guitar riffs. We got the chance to ask Richie a few questions, and gain a little insight [...]

Damn, is it spring already? February seemed to fly by - almost like it was shorter than all the other months... Alright, all bad jokes aside, the end of February is also the unofficial end of winter, meaning it's time to take a look at all the fantastic album art that's come out in the last three months. Here are 10 that caught my eye: Thao & the Get Down Stay Down - [...]

We don't even feel like we are fully recovered from my ENU hangover, and another weekend is upon us. This is a very busy weekend for the Nashville music scene, and you should enjoy in moderation. Both because that is the safe and mature thing to do, but also because next weekend we are gonna all get together and par-tay at the Free SXSW Send-Off Party at Mercy Lounge & High Watt on March 2nd . While you wrap your head around that, peruse the No Country weekend rundown of our spotlighted shows for the [...]

Hey gang. Welcome to your weekly Friday Mixtape. I took this photograph at a small beach on the island of Boracay in the Phillipines. Download the high resolution version of this photograph . (~10MB) If you want something to look at while you listen here are my photos of Boracay Philippines . This week's Friday Mixtape was quite a challenge to put together. I had far too many tracks, too little sleep, and not much time. Oddly those creative constraints made for quite a nice mixtape. It's a bit longer than usual. [...]

A Quick Word from the Author: February seems to be living up to expectations, despite how high the bar has been set so far this year. The music is just too good. This week is a compilation of the past two weeks, it's a bit lengthier, and fairly grand. The Tryptophan, specifically, is fairly impressive. Also, if any of you are planning on recording one of these nonsensical "Harlem Shake" videos, don't. It's annoying and frankly, you're not going [...]
New York City’s Guards don’t mess around. In Guards We Trust erupts from the speakers, a whirlwind of Phil Spector atmospherics, stomping drums, hazy spiralling guitar lines, and harmony-drenched psychedelic pop vocals. The songs harness big hooks and choruses with enough fuzz-pedal to keep things suitably lo-fi, but with more melodies in each song than many bands manage over the course of an album. You might be aware of Guards ’ protagonist already. Richie Follin is the guitarist in indie-pop band Cults . [...]
