As a classic rock loving pre-teen, there were several bands that my parents grew up listening to back in the good ol' days which were in turn passed down to my brothers and I at a young age. Whether I was listening to classic rock bands off a CD, the computer or the radio in the car, with two native Winnipeggers as parents, you can only imagine how many times I heard that The Guess Who were from their home town (Winnipeg, Manitoba). With hits such as [...]
BTO's classic 1974 album gets the audiophile treatment.

Now here comes the easiest five minutes of my week. I get to look through my iTunes library for "classic" songs to share with you for Throwback Thursdays. Unlike last weeks " Gifted Singer-Songerwriters " post, my selections today have very little in common aside from their place in music history. That being said, i'm not going to bore you with biographical band information or what each song means to me. Instead, I'll let the Queen , Steve Miller Band , The Guess Who [...]

"American Woman" - The Guess Who "colored lights can hypnotize..." "American Girl" - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers "make it last all night..." "Born in the USA" - Bruce Springsteen "nowhere to run aint got nowhere to go..." "Rockin' in the Free World" - Neil Young "there's colors on the street red, white and blue..." "American Pie" - Don McLean [...]
Filed under: News , Awards Courtesy of BurtonCummings Canada's Walk of Fame has over 130 inductees but organizers have yet to spice things up. For example, the musical honorees' squares located along both sides of Toronto's King Street (and running south along Simcoe Street) could be equipped with sensors, resulting in a short song snippet when walking on a certain star. You could hear Shania Twain sing "Whose star have your boots been [...]
After a brief "recession" of sorts in terms of new music that inspired me, I was so happy to find that Mookie grabbed me a copy of Small Sins' Pot Calls Kettle Black (even if it is eight months old already). Small Sins is a Canadian band that mixes electro sounds with catchy hooks, and then surprises you by genre-bending at least once on an album. Quick...immediate names that spring to mind when the mention of Canadian musical acts come up in conversation? If you are imagining Celine Dion, Nickelback, Bryan Adams, KD Lang, Barenaked Ladies, Hedley, Wide Mouth Mason, Three Days Grace, Theory of a Deadman, Swollen Members, Sum 41, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne or Alanis Morissette...shame on you. Although these bands and (questionable) musicians helped to shape the landscape of the Canadian Music Scene, they do little convey how talented our country truly is. I meant to put this post together after Arcade Fire pulled off their Grammy victory for [...]

So the Juno nominations were handed out earlier this week and the usual suspects got the usual nods – Arcade Fire for Artist of the Year, Suburbs for Album of the Year, Arcade Fire for Group of the Year, Suburbs for Alternative Album of the Year, Arcade Fire for Songwriter of the Year – and with Arcade Fire picking up a few Grammy nods as well, it looks like it will be their year. Personally, I think Suburbs was over-rated but that's just me. I really didn't find that much [...]

The Guess Who are a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Initially gaining recognition in Canada, they also found international success from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s with numerous hit singles, including "American Woman", "These Eyes" and "Share the Land". This concert performed at The Ambassador Theatre, in St Louis, MO, on the 6th May 1974 was one of the last show before guitarists Kurt Winter and Donnie McDougall left the group and is considered by a good number of fans as the overall best line up. Broadcast live on FM by radio [...]
Providing an update on the musical status of Canada, a country we haven't heard of since the 70's...

Above photo is from an awesome film called Brick School is starting back up in the next couple weeks and since we're big on education here at Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good, (I am married to a first grade teacher) I've made a back-to-school mix inspired by some of my favorite songs from school films. Whether it's Cat Steven's exuberant "Here Comes My Baby" playing while Max Fischer makes a go of it at Grover Cleveland, Air's evocative "Highschool Lover" providing the backdrop to tale of the mysterious Lisbon sisters, or [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens paid tribute to Led Zeppelin Thursday night, fusing two of Jimmy Page 's guitar pieces into songs by Idol and Generation X. Performing at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif., Stevens sneaked a few riffs from Zeppelin's 'Heartbreaker' into Idol's cover of the Doors ' 'L.A. Woman' (Yes, that's a cover within a cover). Later, he performed the intro to 'Over [...]

W hich would you prefer to live without: sound or vision? It's a question we've all been asked, or asked ourselves, at some point, with most of us, I presume, opting to forego sound over vision. I'd probably save my eyesight, too, but for a major music aficionado like me, it would kill never again to hear David Bowie's "Sound And Vision," the Guess Who's "These Eyes," the Supremes "I Hear A Symphony," or any of my other favorite music. But if Beethoven could compose some of the most moving music of all time without the benefit [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Movies Christie Goodwin, Getty Images Randy Bachman 's songs have been covered by numerous artists, including the Butthole Surfers , Krokus and Junior Walker and the All Stars. But when he first heard the Lenny Kravitz version of 'American Woman,' he just wasn't sure about it. "He didn't do my guitar solo, which is kind of the signature of the song," Bachman tells [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , Holy Hell In the '70s, "taking care of business" was a catchphrase for Elvis Presley . He named his backing musicians the TCB Band, gave away jewelry with the initials TCB. on it and even had "TCB" -- with a lightning bolt -- painted on his private jet. But while Randy Bachman had long heard that Elvis got the phrase from the Bachman-Turner Overdrive song of the same name, the rumor wasn't confirmed until years [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive Fred Turner was happily retired, spending his golden years restoring old Corvettes. But when former bandmate Randy Bachman asked him to lay down a vocal track for a song he'd written, Turner remembered something about rock and roll. He really liked it. "I said to Randy that people usually retire because they don't like what they're doing," Turner, the former Bachman-Turner Overdrive singer, tells Spinner. "And here I was into [...]
