The Guggenheim Grotto , the Dublin, Ireland band that's (thankfully) now situated here in Brooklyn, have just finished recording their latest record and are set to play a couple shows around town to celebrate. After completing national tours with everyone from Ani DiFranco to They Might Be Giants, it'll be exciting to hear what's next for the folksy indie pop group. For any fan of The Pogues or Glen Hansard, listen to the band's airy approach to love's lessons hard learned) in latest single 'Her Beautiful Ideas.' The video (below) complains about how hard it is to get [...]

Dublin-based duo takes you on a unique musical journey.

...that has been quite a long break! Although it seemed to me that I have been listening to music constantly, I couldn't really concentrate on what I was listening to. Shame, really, as there's been quite a few good things around, like the arrival of Northern Portrait 's clear-vinyl 73-single Life Returns To Normal (aahh... the good, old vinyl-collector's days... ), or the announcement of Champagne Riot 's new EP, to be released [...]

listen: there’s a helluva good universe next door; let’s go. -e e cummings Dr. Seuss wrote the governing document. It’s fairly straightforward, and mostly requires that citizens respect rhyme and meter, which is the only law anyone really needs. Heads are removable, and a fun game to play is hide-and-seek with your own head. Sometimes heads will get mixed up, and this generates laughter. This is also a fun drinking game. My top 3 shows to hit if you're not going to the Hollywood Bowl for Smokey Robinson : ☛ The Californian [ background ] and Judson & Mary [ ditto ] play Spaceland, but late additions to the bill will make tonight pretty special — singer-songwriter Charlie Wadhams plays late, and L.A. newcomer (via Austin) Billy Harvey [whom I wrote about way back when ] plays early. ☛ Nico Vega opens for Sweethead at the Troubadour. ☛ And Irish folk duo [...]
This edition of The Buzzsicle, which I've randomly titled "Summerfunnin'," includes a batch of music that's hit my inbox in the past few weeks — some old, some new, some just new to me. In future episodes, I will try to highlight new releases and songs/bands that I simply don't have the time to do full blog posts on. The Guggenheim Grotto have been mentioned here on Slowcoustic before and now find themselves releasing a new album (I think yesterday if I am not mistaken) and it once again finds its way into my listening. GG craft melodies that most would crave to be able to, the harmony between the boys (Kevin May and Mick Lynch) seems to come by honestly and shows in the music. While I am not the biggest fan in my circle of online friends (Trini, I see you there...) they are very worthy of more than a few spins for the new [...]

The Guggenheim Grotto's last album (their second), Happy the Man , was one of my favourite Irish albums of 2008. It was a marvellous pop-rock record. So when I saw over on IndieLimerick that there was a new one imminent, I had to find out more. The Universe is Laughing is the band's third full-length, and has been release online on their official website. Tracklist: 1. Trust Me I’m A Thief 2. Map Of The Human Heart 3. Wings And Feathers 4. Never Before 5. Concentrate 6. Wisdom 7. Ruby [...]

Having seen the band a handful of times in the last month, I've heard the track "Wisdom" as many times in it's raw form. The tune - which comes from the band's forthcoming record, Master of the Universe - is partly inspired by the long hours the band has logged crossing the country in support of their brilliant Happy the Man . There is currently no date set for the release of the record, though I'd expect it would be sometime in June. Stay tuned! You can purchase "Wisdom" here . The band [...]

The Irish Troubadour of the New Millennium has been largely defined by the likes of Damien Rice and Glen Hansard. My wife refers to it as "sad bastard" music, a title that I find difficult to argue. It's not all doom and gloom on The Emerald Isle though, one of its best-kept secrets is the folk-pop duo The Guggenheim Grotto. One of my favorite "new to me" bands of last year, I have been looking forward to the opportunity to see the group bring their quirky tales to the stage. Thankfully, I'll get that chance on March 18 th , [...]
