I know it's a bit late, but check out Swan Fungus' 106 Sunday Mixtape. It should get me back into the swing of things. Tracks: 1. Mogwai - Batcat - (buy this album) 2. Alice Cooper - [...]
"Uh, maybe you've heard of The Battle of Shaker Heights ? Anyone? Hello?" - Tom, refreshing Spike's memory on the early Shia LaBoof classic [More to come.] "I want you to think about Dogmo before you say anything else you might regret at some point, okay?" -- Dr. Fred Meyers, urging caution as Tom enters his Joyspace "And this Gabby from Winnipeg? You just let her go like the instant she didn't fit your needs. This is terrible." -- Dr. Meyers, discovering that Tom is not [...]

There are certain books I feel I should have read. Certain films I think I should have seen. Not necessarily for entertainment purposes but more out of a sense of cultural enlightenment. However misplaced a sentiment that may be, I always feel I should strive to broaden and enrich my reference points by reading and watching things that are out of my comfort zone. That are culturally, historically or critically important. Or maybe I just mean worthy. Because yes, I guess there's a certain degree of snobbery to it. In fact, no, I know there is. [...]

Real Gingaz Do Real Thangz by Molly Lambert Mad Men 's sexy secretary Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) is not a natural redhead . But I'm pretty sure her giant rack is real, which is cool since she is built like a luxury ocean liner. Hendricks says she's been dyeing her hair since high school, going back and forth from red to black, because she's a goth . When I found out Hendricks's [...]
or: A Post That Begins With Some Discussion of Matmos, Continues With a Reference to John Cage, and Ends With a Song by Toad the Wet Sprocket Matmos was in town on Sunday night and put on a solid show that included everything from shining lasers and flashlights on a photoelectrically activated oscillator to projections of gay porn. J Lesser also performed with the band, though I think I was the only one in the audience who was excited about this. [...]

We first introduced you to Computer Club not too long ago, when we posted our favorite electro 80's cover songs . His cover of New Order 's " Bizarre Love Triangle " is arguably the best 80's cover I've heard in a long time, which got me thinking, what has Mike (aka 1/3 of Evol Intent aka Computer Club) been up to lately. After a few back and forths on myspace he was nice enough to send us over some of his latest tracks and even take the time to do a short interview [...]

Windmill Genre: Alternative / Experimental / Indie From: London, United Kingdom Singer-songwriter Matthew Thomas Dillon (a poetic name if ever I've heard one) otherwise known as Windmill (an understated name if ever I've heard one) hails from Newport Pagnell, the place where Morrissey lost his bag ( 'Is It Really So Strange?'). Windmill can only be described as [...]

I saw Wall-E last week and absolutely loved it. I'm a huge fan of everything Pixar's done (except for Cars, which was just ok) and this film is right up there with Toy Story as my favorite Pixar film. I actually got choked up in a couple parts, it was a completely wonderful movie experience. There were so many iconic moments in the film that I know will be remembered for years to come. If you haven't seen it yet, I urge you to check it out. The movie inspired me to look to my music collection for [...]

90's Nostalgia Nook This here is a new feature that will explore the music of the 1990's. Have you been engaging in 90's nostalgia? I know I have. This track from Bee Thousand always brings me back. So yeah, perfect songs. Glossy, slick, impenetrably perfect things that they are. Like marbles. Or ridiculously ornate yet also impenetrable. Like Faberge eggs. I've been thinking about them too much over the last few days, as I am want to do with something on my mind. So I'm nipping the 'perfectly perfect' song thing in the bud right now (before this blog turns into Mojo). I'm going to move on to the sort of stuff that really thrills me (although I do love the songs in the last few posts). Namely, messy music. Music that feels like that double whiskey [...]

My review of Robert Pollard is Off to Business ran today in the Boston Phoenix . I'm a tremendous Guided by Voices fan, but I've found it hard to dig deeply into Pollard's solo work. I'll take a chance here and there, but it's always a little bit off. I'm happy to say, however, that Robert Pollard is Off to Business is an exceptional release, perhaps his most focused, most entertaining in years (and that includes GBV releases). [...]

I really like the lo-fi studio magic of the opening of Guided By Voices ' "Tractor Rape Chain". I've never taken the time to read up on what exactly went into the song's intro, but it sounds like they took a casual acoustic run-through or demo of the song's opening, probably recorded on a boom box, and then cut in the full-band's studio intro. It's cool that the studio entrance is not quite in sync with the acoustic intro. It's cool that the sound of the rooms in which each recording took place don't come close to [...]
Between the successful release of Iron Man (sorry, Speed Racer) and the mounting anticipation for The Incredible Hulk, The Dark Knight, and Hellboy 2, some have already dubbed 2008 the greatest summer in comic book film history! The noticeable influx of comics at the local cineplex got Hypeful to thinking ...

photo by brennan cavanaugh sup peoples? i am so far behind on my uncle bob news/music its kinda pathetic. for some reason i have been selfish with my listening habits as of late and i barely listened to standard gargoyle decisions and coast to coast carpet of love . i hear they're great but i think i may have od'd on everything bob/gbv for the better part of 15 years that i had to cease to care for a while in order to maintain the relationship. anywho, i didn't know that he split with merge [...]

Guided By Voices recorded more than 2000 songs, 1305 of which were released over 32 albums and EPs, so if you're just getting up to speed start with 1994's almost-perfect Bee Thousand . Guided By Voices - Gold Star for Robot Boy Guided By Voices - The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory According to Marc Woodworth's 33 1/3 series review, at least sixty-five songs were recorded and considered for the album and five distinct concepts were rejected before the band hit upon the records final form. One late [...]
He would probably watch Weeds . Kevin Nealon on 4/20 I'm no pot smoker by any means (although I have slightly dabbled in Hawaiian ganja), but I am a huge fan of the Showtime series. So when the above video was sent to me via email in celebration of the reefer holiday, I just had to put together an impromptu playlist for all you lovers [...]
I'm sitting in a hotel room approximately 100 miles east of Amarillo, TX in what may very well be the definition of a one horse town (and this being west Texas, I mean that both literally and figuratively). Might I also add that if you ever find yourselves in Amarillo, TX, do pay a [...]

You've got to hand it to Bob Pollard . The dude can write. And write. And write he does. This feels like it was written with a can of EZ-Cheez. Don't let that stop you... Listen: "Gratification To Concrete" (mp3) Note: Robert Pollard is no longer on Merge Records. He is now putting stuff out on his own label Guided By Voices Inc. His latest is entitled Robert Pollard Is Off To Business . It has 10 songs in 35 minutes making it a "departure from form" for Mr. Pollard. It come [...]
