An album which sounds like various cuttings from a garage floor, held together with staples. Looking at the staples, you see that they've been been put in a few times, before they've finally stuck. There are holes around the edges where previous staple attempts have failed, but looking at the staples in place now, they look solid, they look good. The cuttings are held in place well, and you can see that although the previous stapling attempts have marred the quality of the collection on the whole, looking at the whole work now, it all looks rather neat. Everything about this album -- from the murky sound to the youthful energy -- feels "classic", but in the end the material itself is merely solid. Despite his inability to control his ultra-prolific output, don't mistake Robert Pollard for anything less than a savvy promoter and showman. The reunion of the "classic" Guided By Voices line-up comes at a time where these sorts of reunions have become commonplace, a way for older bands to both rehash the past and -- let's admit it -- make some money on our nostalgia. It's seems only right that GBV and Archers of [...]
Do I really need to hear another Guided by Voices album? I mean, Bee Thousand is a masterpiece, but reunion records have a nasty habit of sucking the big one. Then again, "The Unsinkable Fats Domino" suggests that maybe I should give Let's Go Eat the Factory a listen after all. This is a hard-hitting pop rock tune with the same kind of slapdash, tossed-off charm that the band made its signature back in the day. Maybe I'll get around to this album after all.
Guided By Voices - Old Bones By registered post, we've sent for her indefinite residency on the greenest isle. The folder/application/lifeline, unintentionally sickly green, is thick with pages still warm from an overworked printer. Copies of copies prove its muscle, with its insides to include an abundant fall of letters one wouldn't keenly show to even a best friend, birth certificates, one with an ink print of baby feet (about the size of those toy cars we had as children, the ones got free with cereal), financial records, receipts, invitations, film stubs, concert tickets, [...]

This week's episode finds me considering... - gloomy witchy techno from England - Guided by Voices' heartbreakingly ordinary new album - and Nim, the tragic chimp whose life was ruined by a pompous turtlenecked professor with a hard-on for his female postgrad students and a disregard for the simple simian's heart. the hipster chimp with the heart of gold [...]

Guided By Voices - Let's Go Eat The Factory By Kenny McMurtrie In the past I've used good old-fashioned money to buy good old-fashioned CDs by Guided By Voices. I never play them anymore, instead preferring the occasional song to be thrown up randomly by my mp3 player. I consider myself a fan though, despite being able to name off the top of my head at time of writing only one song by them ('I Am A Tree'). When Robert Pollard's voice wafts through my earphones I'm pleased to be [...]
The word "classic" gets tossed around quite a bit these days. In fact, the other day I saw my friend Gavin walking down the street. He was drinking a Classic Coca-Cola, while listening to classic rock on his iPod classic. That's just classic Gavin. When a word gets used so often in so many ways, we run the risk of taking its meaning for granted, so let's consider the meaning of the word "classic." As a noun, it's a work of great importance, it's something that stands the test of time, it's the standard by which others are [...]

This week marks the release of Guided By Voices ' first album in 8 years and the first to feature their classic lineup in 16 years, so I thought that'd make a good opportunity to do a list of the quintessential tracks from the legendary Dayton, OH indie rock band. My history with the band actually starts, oddly enough, with Jason Schwartzman . He shared the track "The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory" on his iTunes Celebrity Playlist and I've been hooked ever since. I've been lucky enough to see the band live twice [...]

Guest post by Arson Welles Remember that band that your friend was in for a couple years in early high school? They practiced in that guy's garage every Thursday, and played at the school talent show a couple of times, and they were always talking about when they were going into the studio to record their demo and how they were booking a tour for spring break or maybe summer or maybe next year, and the guitar player (his name was either Kurt or Dustin, you can't remember) had really long hair and [...]
The reunited "classic lineup" of Guided By Voices just played a new song, The Unsinkable Fats Domino, on Letterman. The song is the first single off the band's new album Let's Go Eat the Factory . It features Robert Pollard's mid-90s lineup, which produced two of the best GBV offerings, Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes. After an initial listen, the new album sounds pretty good. More on that later. Nice recovery by guitarist Greg Demos, who took a spill on stage. It's certainly not the first [...]
Jake and I were just talking yesterday about how lame and sterile live TV appearances have become (compared to this ). From lip-synching to flawless choreography to note-for-note playback of their latest singles, artists hawking their wares on TV have become a bore. Except for Guided By Voices. Watch Pollard and crew jumble through their perfectly messy power pop as their bassist takes a spill right there on national TV. Watch to the end and here him tell Dave "I fell on my ass!" Perfect from now on. [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Holy Hell , Television Cory Schwartz, Getty Images One thing you can't call a Guided by Voices performance is dull. The influential lo-fi rockers may have aged a bit, but their shows still feature the same high kicks, chain smoking and tequila swilling that we've come to know and love. While the studios of ' The Late Show With [...]

Fans of Van Halen and Aerosmith, look away: I still say Guided by Voices is one of the best American rock 'n' roll bands of all time.
Stolen largely from Pitchfork, here's a list of new releases scheduled for the coming months that have this blog excited. Enjoy. 01-01 Guided by Voices: Let ' s Go Eat the Factory [Fire/GBV] Download Guided By Voices - "Doughnut for a Snowman".mp3 01-24 Cloud Nothings: Attack on Memory [Carpark] Nada Surf: The Stars are Indifferent to Astronomy [...]

Fats Domino may be unsinkable, according to Guided by Voices , but bassist Greg Demos proved he was just as much last night during the band's performance of "The Unsinkable Fats Domino" on Late Show with David Letterman . Slipping on his butt after a usual rock star move, Demos got right back up quick and laughed it off, all without missing a beat (well sort of). At the very least, he provided good advice to all bands who wish to play on Letterman: rock out like a bad ass while playing, just be sure to [...]
Last night, reformed indie heroes Guided By Voices appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman , busting through with " The Unsinkable Fats Domino ," the first single from their new Album Of The Week Let's Go Eat The Factory . And there's a lot to like about the performance: The second-nature showmanship, the classic-rock hooks, the fact that Letterman actually appears to be younger than certain GBV members. The most notable moment, however, comes about 35 seconds into the video below, when bassist Greg Demos straight-up falls on his ass [...]

In support of their just released reunion record Let's Go Eat the Factory , Ohio rockers Guided By Voices dropped by the set of The Late Show with David Letterman to perform a cut of "The Unsinkable Fats Domino." Despite their age, Robert Pallo and co. delivered a fantastic rendition of the song, with all the necessary energy and stage presence needed to carry a late night performance. You can check out their performance in the player above, via The Audio Perv . Let's Go Eat the Factory [...]
