Clay Tomorrow marks the last of the late-summer music festivals, Independents' Day , and it ain't a bad way to end the season. You can check out the full lineup below. Everyone probably has a different must-see act, but as reunions go, Clay is the big name. I spoke to Jerry Dannemiller, who was responsible for booking Clay and about one-third of the ID lineup, and he had this to say about the band to put them in context: "Clay held a special place in a certain period of time. A [...]

Reuniting for the first time in 20 years to celebrate the eighth year of Columbus Discount Records' existence, the True Believers are: Mike Rep Tommy Jay The General Nudge Squidfish Carla Lust I'll spare you my own version of the True Believers' back story and instead point you to a description (complete with Amrep corrections) here and a 2005 interview with Mike Rep . Suffice it to say, it's a pretty big deal that these guys (and girl) are reuniting in two days. Leave it to CDR. [...]

Wednesday night I hit up East London to catch the brilliant Dan Melchior perform songs from his latest record, Assemblage Blues (released by Siltbreeze ). Aside from a keen interest in hearing his live show, I was proud to witness it feature two musicians well-known to the Columbus scene. Mat Bisaro (Guinea Worms, Necropolis) and Tony Allman (El Jesus de Magico) were chosen by Melchior for this ten date European tour through five countries. I caught up with Mat and Tony for a bit after the show to chat about the tour and playing with Melchior. [...]

Pictured :Errand Boy's guest room The Intelligence played Cafe Bourbon Street with The Guinea Worms not too long ago and are documenting their journey for The Stranger . Basically it's just dude talking sh!t about people that were nice enough to put them up. Here's what they had to say about our fine burg- If you are looking for skuzzy rock and roll underbellies, this is your spot, folks. But I like Columbus. I think. Cafe Bourbon St. always treats us well, and we get to [...]

Guinea Worms - Drunk in yr Uggs (mp3) ( buy? ) You find your poetry where you find your poetry. Give me oomph and self-delusional smeared napkin verse over any line mangled by cleverness. Don't gotta go the shortest distance to make your point, world ain't that way, world's a mess. Say what you mean and say it interesting and say like you mean it. Leave the tinkertoys and sophisticated self-concern behind for fools. Problem comes when you want to talk about your rock and roll -- songs [...]

It's that time of year again, when grilling meat, arm wrestling, and indie rock somehow end up together in awkward sentences (like this one). This weekend is the seventh annual Columbus Discount Records BBQ, where the local label shares the wealth and gives you a wealth of local/international talent to gaze upon for as free as possible. This year's version of the tradition entails two star-studded rock shows (Friday night at The Summit and Saturday night at Carabar) as well as a multi-faceted get-together Saturday afternoon at CDR HQ (corner of Oak and Parsons, just up [...]

The line-up for this year's Goner Fest , the Memphis garage-rock festival put on by the label and record store of the same name, was recently announced. Now in its seventh year, this year's Goner Fest, which will run from September 22 to 26, is highlighted by the return of Guitar Wolf (pictured), the storied louder-than-loud Japanese rockers whose first American album, Wolf Rock , was released by Goner in 1993. Eric Fiedl, the founder of Goner, will perform himself, with The Oblivians (also recently reunited) headlining on Friday night. Other sure-to-be [...]

From the horses mouth - In order to help out our friend Ben Hamilton we are making this saturday's show a benefit. The show at Summit is also a birthday party for the salty old helmsman of the bar (yrs truly) with "performances" by some Ohio favorites... Guinea Worms, Unholy Two, We March, and Grafton. Strongest Man Alive, Righteous Buck and the Skull Scorchers, and Washington Beach Bums will be at Bobo. 5 bucks for both shows, pay at either door. the set times will be staggered out so you can stagger between them. [...]

Pictured: Warpaint@Summit Rebirth motherfucker! Yeah, here we go again. A TON of cool shit has happened since we last got together in this official capacity and I'm not gonna tell you anything about it! I will tell you that Duffy made me take some online journalism and creative writing and photography courses while I was on hiatus and as you're about to see it did absolutely no good! I will also tell you I picked a good week to decide to start doing this crap again. Super Desserts, Margot and the Nuclear So and [...]

MP3:Guinea Worms-B.I.S.I. Guinea Worms are having an event to highlight the release on their long desired album Sorcererers of Madness on Columbus Discount at Cafe Bourbon Street this evening. I don't know much about this band and I prefer to not write book reports. Click on their name to read an educated opinion. And i read some statistic on how this record's national demand exceeded it's supply so...listen to MP3 and evaluate your evening i suppose If Jay Electronica or Get RIght [...]

MP3 : Christmas in Columbus (zip) On this first little Columbus-based, mini-compilation of Christmas music, you'll find some stuff that's campy, some stuff that's sincere and some that's a little bit of both. (Kind of like everything at Christmastime, right?) Here's the track list: 1. The Guinea Worms - Christmas Booze 2. The Pink Flamingos - Mama, for Christmas I Want a Guitar 3. Tom Foolery & The Mistakes - Christmastime is Here 4. Tom Foolery & The Mistakes - Linus & Lucy 5. The Well-Dressed Downs - Won't [...]

The Flaming Lips@LC Oh hey, remember this thingie? I know, it's been a minute. Don't wanna hear it. I bet you can only imagine that a ton of cool shit has happened since we last got up. For example, a weekend camping excursion with a bunch of dudes, guns and fireworks( in the streets ) O.K. enough will the small talk. Oh man where do I even start, the older I get the less I remember. In this issue of "How long is Robert Duffy gonna keep letting that jackass write this crap", I [...]

CDR SAMPLER: MP3 : Piledriver Nitemare #2 by Dan Melchior und das Menace MP3 : Untitled .WAV File by Deathly Fighter MP3 : Little White Chords by Sandwitch MP3 : Don't You Look Sideways by Bassholes MP3 : Accidental Space Tourist by Guinea Worms One of the most foolish notions that has circulated this year is the idea that bands like Karate Coyate, Wing & Tusk, Ghost Shirt, This is My Suitcase and other indie groups [...]

[ Over the next week a shit-ton of Mile High Festival coverage will be hitting this blog, and I'm also doing a short blast on it for TMT . For now though, I'm going to sit down with a recent purchase, the fantastic The World is Lousy With Ideas comp, and review the SHIT out of it. ] It'd take a hella-hot compilation to jump ahead of the fairly recent (and fairly rad) Dark Was the Night comp [...]
Once again the Columbus Music Co-op are throwing a free party in the parking lot of Surly Girl Saloon in Columbus, OH. This event is a fundraiser for their musician's assistance program and is always a great event - a sort of nice counterpoint to the monster-sized event that is Comfest . Schedule: Apocalypso ...........................3:0 0 pm Total Foxx.......................... ..3:45 pm The American Jobs.................4:30 pm Winter Makes Sailors ...............5:15 pm Chuck and Lisa from Wussy .......6:00 pm Rosehips .........................6:45 pm Deerhead [...]

El Jesus De Magico are featured on this month's release in The Columbus Discount Singles Club Year One 7" Inch Singles Series . Future singles will include releases by: Psychedelic Horseshit , Little Claw , Cheater Slicks , and Guinea Worms among others. The series is limited to 250, and the series is SOLD OUT. It just doesn't seem right that only 250 people get to listen to the new El Jesus. The 7" has an "Unclean Ghost" a-side and a "Pirate Utopia" b-side. For you... right here, I have the [...]

The great state of Ohio has raised legends. Cleveland's known for hall-of-famers Pere Ubu and the Electric Eels. Dayton nurtured Kim Deal and Bob Pollard. And from its well-situated spot in between those two cities, the state capital of Columbus is starting to have some sort of cohesive musical identity thrust upon it. What with NME and MTV creaming on Times New Viking and Psychedelic Horseshit. Not to say it's undeserved - I think their excellent live sets in the WFMU studios ( TNV ) ( PHS ) are testament enough. What follows is a sampling - [...]
