Guitar Wolf at Chaos in Tejas ( more by Keith Marlowe ) Break out the pomade, shades and leather jackets, Japan's "greatest Jet rock n roll band" Guitar Wolf have scheduled a set of US dates for March and April with portions of the tour trickling out slowly but surely. From the looks of it, New Zealand's The Transistors will join them on most, if not all dates including at Knitting Factory on 3/31 . [...]
In retrospect, the show we all should have been at this past week happened on Friday night at the Loft, as Japanese punk rockers Guitar Wolf headlined a bill that also featured Nashville's Chea... Continue reading "Picture Show: Guitar Wolf at The Loft" >

USHER, AKON ( Rose Garden , 1 Center Ct) After a brief career lull following the blowup "Yeah!" Usher has roared back to life with songs dominating the club scene, such as "OMG" and "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love." Expect a sweaty amount of hype, awesome choreography, and opener Akon (who, frankly, I don't like very much). WM. STEVEN HUMPHREY SLEIGH BELLS, NEON INDIAN, OBERHOFER Roseland , 8 NW 6th) Read our article on Sleigh [...]

Over the course of their 23-year career, leather clad Japanese trio Guitar Wolf have managed to release 23 consistently grimy punk rock albums (including one which claims to be the loudest ever recorded), toured the world 10 times over, and starred in a cult horror film where they battle zombies from outer space. The band plays a unique, over-the-top brand of punk which they call "Jet Rock 'n' Roll", a sound inspired by '70s power chord punk played at excessively loud volume. Guitar Wolf has a reputation for playing some of the wildest shows in Japan, but now they're touring North America with a few [...]

Summer is coming and the sky is falling with all these tornadoes so as you are ducking for cover I thought it would be cool to give you a theme playlist. Here's some songs about aliens and UFO's. I know we're not alone somehow. The photo above is from the mars probe which I thought was so alien and beautiful looking. The real Men in Black know the deal. They are keeping secrets from the masses. Sunlamp Show MP3 by The Aliens from the album Luna [...]

Prayers and best wishes to Japan. It's not even 2012 yet and between Japan, Chile, Haiti and New Zealand, it appears that the Earth is pissed off. Or something. Now we'll have endless news stories in the U.S.A. about what would happen if the "big one" hit ( insert your city here ). As I live in New York, it's just another unpleasant possibility to ignore. Tsunami's, earthquakes, nuclear attacks... we're all dead pretty much instantly; why bother stressing.

Frank Yang Adele has been a big deal for a while, her 2008 debut 19 having picked up all kinds of accolades and awards. And that's kind of a shame because with that level of acclaim as a floor, it's difficult to express just how much better the follow-up 21 is. I appreciated the debut as a showcase for Ms Adkin's talents as a singer and songwriter, but the follow up bests it in pretty much every way. Her [...]
Well, this makes up for losing Curren$y.Austin people: your dreams of seeing "Wardance" performed live will come true soon. Killing Joke has just been confirmed for Chaos in Tejas, who were clearly not content with just having the already unfuckwithable Autopsy and Converge on board. Since Inquisition aren't returning for another round, somebody's gotta represent the corpse paint, and who better
The dudes at Chaos in Tejas just scored another huge coup - Converge! Yes, the New England bangers are confirmed for the fest, and if you've seen one or many of their live shows, you know ish just got real serious. Between this, Autopsy, Hooded Menace, and Tragedy, this may be the best year of Chaos ever. Also newly confirmed are Austin grinders Hatred Surge, Boston powerviolence group Mind

Last night's screening of The Room was pretty ridiculous. Crazy kids with handles of hard liquor, weed, and Costco-size boxes of spoons to be hurled back and forth for the duration of the film. It was about as good an experience as I could have hoped for newbies Tom, Nicci and Troy. You can't live in Los Angeles and ignore this shit. It's pretty much the most amazing moviegoing experience that has ever existed. Even if, at 27, you feel like the oldest person in attendance. I updated the official Swan Fungus concert calendar…so, there's that. [...]

They say there are no windows in casinos so that gamblers lose track of the time spent at the countless card tables and slot machines in Las Vegas. The Palms Casino and Resort is no different, but attendees of Matador Records 21st anniversary party, simply dubbed Matador at 21 , didn't need change in light to see that time can be both cruel and redemptive. From the physical appearance of Robert Pollard, the successful national tour that Pavement was concluding, the ecstatic anticipation of the Guided By Voices reunion, and empty seats that younger bands like Girls and Shearwater [...]

Frank Yang Las Vegas is the sort of place that everyone should go to once in their life, if just to bear witness to the astonishing and grotesque excess of the city. If you couldn't tell, I am no great fan of the place and, having been there once as an adult some years back, I had been there, done that, eaten the deep-fried twinkie and had no need to ever go back. Matador Records , however, felt otherwise and so when the astonishingly stacked lineup for their 21st anniversary celebrations was announced [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News If the Matador at 21 concerts are as much about the newer artists as past favorites, Friday night belonged to one of the label's more recent signings: a plucky little band from New York City known as Sonic Youth , which signed to Matador in 2008 after almost two decades on Geffen. "This is from our 12th Matador record back in 1991," Lee Ranaldo joked before his lead vocal turn [...]

I'm assuming that most of you would be at the Palms this weekend if possible. Think about it. We hit the Blackjack table between sets. Whoah?! The line-up for this year's Goner Fest , the Memphis garage-rock festival put on by the label and record store of the same name, was recently announced. Now in its seventh year, this year's Goner Fest, which will run from September 22 to 26, is highlighted by the return of Guitar Wolf (pictured), the storied louder-than-loud Japanese rockers whose first American album, Wolf Rock , was released by Goner in 1993. Eric Fiedl, the founder of Goner, will perform himself, with The Oblivians (also recently reunited) headlining on Friday night. Other sure-to-be [...]
The last few weeks we've posted a few of these summer mix things. But one guy didn't subscribe to the whole 'fairest of seasons' spin we were putting on summer. Liam P. Manley thinks that while winter might be a bully that kicks the shit out of you six months out of twelve, summer's just the guy who says they're your best mate and then talks shit about you behind your back.
