Seeing as how Guru held down Hip-Hop down so heavy, it's only right hip-hop holds him back down with tribute tracks like Marco Polo's "G.U.R.U." To commemorate the recent three year anniversary of the late Gang Starr MC's untimely passing, the Canadian producer has handed over this eloquently produced boom-bap track to Talib Kweli, to wax poetic about everything from personal tour stories with the OG himself to how much overall influence the Jazzmatazz master had on everyone who heard his baritone flow. Plus, Polo got DJ Premier to add some cuts and make this [...]

It's nearly the end of the month and it's clear to us all now that April just plain sucked (unless you got married or whatever - congrats). But for the US as a whole, and Texas and Boston especially, kind of a shitty time. So let's just all collectively exhale and try to start May off on a better note. I made this mix for you including new tracks from k-os, Das Racist, RZA, Shlohmo, The Hood Internet, Lakutis, and Zilla Rocca so you can start early. Love you guys. : Dilated Peoples, Havoc, And Guru - Worst [...]

Friday April 19th marks the three-year anniversary of the passing of Guru and this track, “G.U.R.U.” f/ Talib Kweli & DJ Premier is dedicated to his memory and a celebration of his life, legacy and all of the vast accomplishments and great music he and DJ Premier gave us. “G.U.R.U.” also serves as the lead-single from Marco Polo’s forthcoming LP, PA2: The Director’s Cut, which will be released in July 2013 on SoulSpazm Records. “Tomorrow marks the three-year anniversary of the passing of the legendary G.U.R.U. of Gang Starr. I decided to this leak this record one day [...]

Tomorrow (April 19) marks the third anniversary of the death of Keith Elam, better known as Guru. And to pay tribute to the late hip-hop legend, Marco Polo enlisted the help of Talib Kweli and DJ Premier for "G.U.R.U.". It's a fitting lineup on multiple levels. For one, Kweli clearly has mad love and respect for Guru and career. Then you have Premo, aka Guru's musical partner during their time as Gang Starr. Rounding it out is Polo, who probably wouldn't have the sound he does without Premo. Yeah, this cut is important. Listen [...]

It's impossible to listen to everything, but that doesn't stop me from trying. That being said it's not uncommon for something truly great to slip through the cracks. I suppose it's just a facet of my personality that makes it so easy for me to become obsessed with certain releases, which is exactly what has happened with the five from last year that I've selected below. They are albums that have become staples in my everyday life, but for whatever reason went unrecognized by me here. Since I feel weird about that I'm taking the opportunity to do so now. [...]

When writing about certain rappers, there are immediate qualities that are difficult not to point to in a description. There's the flow, the way the MC rides (or doesn't ride) the beat, and perhaps the most powerful element: his or her voice. While it's true that you could argue that most rappers have at the very least a "good" voice, there is a select group of MCs on another level entirely. And if you have read enough music magazines, blogs, and the like, you might have seen a writer state that he or she could listen to said rapper recite [...]
When it comes to being a successful rapper one must have a three essential ingredients: lyrics, charisma and flow. Mf Doom 8. Tech N9ne 9. [...]

Did you guys hear about Lupe Fiasco getting escorted off the stage by security at a pre-inaugural concert for performing a thirty minute song railing against Obama? This is the kind of thing I can get behind, and I LIKE Obama. Don't be afraid to be loud, y'all. This little story has nothing to do with this month's mix though. I just wanted to mention it because it's one of my favorite stories this week, and you should check out Lupe's new album Food & Liquor II because it's pretty good. I really appreciate the fact that he [...]

This past weekend, BBC Radio 1Xtra hosted a new audio documentary called The Story of Guru . It's an hour-long feature that tells the story of one of hip-hop's greatest voices through the words of Guru's family, his former Gang Starr partner DJ Premier , Common , Big Shug, and many others. I don't think I have to tell you that this is a must listen, do I? I thought so. You can stream the documentary at BBC Radio 1Xtra . [ via ]

A cool beverage to accompany a late night (or early morning, depending on where you are and who you are). Blu plucks up a hard hitting beat (replete with scratches from Exile of a classic Guru sample, "lemonade was a popular drink and it still is") to display that he's still pretty good at assembling bars, even when he doesn't seem to be rapping about anything in particular. You can name your price here for a download of "Lemonade," or buy one of the 400 limited edition 73 records. Stream the track below. [...]

Ready, set, bong! Get your fuzzed-out munchies on and prepare to receive the latest rips from Connecticut beach-punk outfit High Pop who just released their second full-length record "Hip Hip Hooray" on August 2nd. Endless foamy waves of guitar crash and swirl against the pulsating and overdriven bass, creating a broken sky of shimmering reverb clouds that hang lazily like stale smoke in the back of a speeding panel van. It's the Dead Kennedys doing their best Beach Boys impression on April 20th. If you think you can jive with this turkey then head [...]

As the interview continues, Premier takes the time to speak on his ability to [...]
