
Got to be honest I had no idea who Guthrie Kennard was before reading the press-release to his latest album Matchbox, so I discover he's released several solo albums as well as playing bass for the legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard who produced this release - guaranteeing it's worth listening to. The album's a fine set of Texas country-blues, solid earthy vocal, strong lyrics and a minimal production that lets the songs speak for themselves, excellent stuff, had to post the song with the British connection of course. Guitar player and singer Guthrie Kennard is seasoned verteran who has been in the songwriting business since the age of 16. He tears through his Texas rootsy Americana material with confidence and joy, coming up with cheerful songs - Monkey Wrench is a tribute to a female mechanic, Motorcycle praises the joy of riding a bike just for the Hell of it, and Catfish Fishin' conjures up the image of sunny afternoon with a bunch of friends trying to catch a meal.
