But he did sing me about six songs over the phone while I interviewed him this morning. He was left all alone afterhours in the office of his Tried and True Music in Austin , just killing a little time before he was out to go see Guy Clark , actually, and so he was in a pretty personable mood. Talked about drifting on nitrous with Pete Stampfel from the Holy Modal Rounders after treatment by student dentists in New York, about how [...]

I interviewed Guy Clark today—poor Guy; me all slugged up with flu—for an article I'm working on for S.F. WEEKLY (also including Loudon Wainwright , who talked about grinding up his corpse and selling it to fans after he died) and besides a little about his upcoming album and a little about the song he's currently got scribbled on a bar napkin on his desk, we ended up talking Roky Erickson , as everyone who talks to me must sooner or later. Townes Van Zandt was Roky's roommate for [...]

If I was going to leave behind a mixed tape of advice songs for my kids, these would be the first two songs. Both are chock full of great advice: Steve Goodman: Between The Lines [ purchase ] The day you're born they sign a piece of paper That will certify the date of your birth And the day you die they sign another Just to prove you've gone back to the [...]

After getting This Mornin'.... added to The Hype Machine a few weeks ago, my hits have been soaring - from about 50 a day to over 200! i'm glad i'm getting some readers, but i've still only got about 5 comments total. i wanna hear from you. Tell me i suck Tell me i'm great Suggest some music Ask about some [...]

A mallard is both a species of duck and a make of steam locomotive. The short-lived band Mallard probably named itself after both, as there´s a flock of ducks flying over a train on the cover of their fine self-titled first album. Mallard started out as an offshoot of Captain Beefheart´s Magic Band. Unsatisfied - and rightly so - with the quality of the Beefheart-album Unconditionally Guaranteed , guitarist Bill Harkleroad (aka Zoot Horn Rollo) and bassist Mark Boston (aka Rockette Morton) decided to form their own ensemble. John French (aka Drumbo) joined as well, but went back to [...]

Setting the Woods on Fire is now entering its third phase of life as a blog. First I had to figure out how to work everything (i.e., html, hosting, feeds). Then I had to get noticed (i.e., elbows, hype machine, links). Now that I can work the controls and have a fair amount of readers, it's time to figure out what I really want to do with this blog. My plate is pretty full these days. Like the man said, I've got chores to keep me busy (house), a clock to keep my time (work), and [...]
Guy Clark began his music career in Houston folk clubs, where he met lifelong friends and colleagues like Townes Van Zandt whom Guy credits as being a huge influence on his life and music. Guy Clark's song were my first introduction to Texas music. This is the title song from a 1993 album on Nonesuch. It was Guy Clark's seventh album and, for some, one of his best albums. MP3 File

I was just re-reading a few of the lads' previous efforts and happened across Tiny Dancer's posting of his first Uncut cd and it reminded me of my first one as well. Unconditionally Guaranteed Volume 5 from June 1999. I remember this cd immensely well as it came at a time when I was immersed in the world of Legend Of Zelda – Ocarina Of Time and I can't hear any of the songs on it without thinking about that game. I was feeling nostalgic about it a few months ago and bought a Wii specifically for the new Zelda [...]
Guy Clark began his music career in Houston folk clubs, where he met lifelong friends and colleagues like Townes Van Zandt whom Guy credits as being a huge influence on his life and music. Desperados Waiting For A Train was my first exposure to Clark's talent. It is still among my favorite songs. MP3 File

"When HackTone's David Gorman phoned to say we were going to restore rare documentary recordings from 1975 of some of the greatest singer-songwriters of the American Southwest, I did not know what to expect. Some days later, a large box of analog tapes arrived. Loading up the first tape by Guy Clark and hitting play filled my studio with a real presence rarely heard in today's era of over-processed music. The simplicity and honesty of the performance and the bigger-than-life sound of Guy's voice and guitar were mesmerizing; likewise for all the seminal artists whose one-on-one performances [...]
Here's a little bit of what I'm missing today by not going to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco. Guy Clark - Desperadoes Waiting on a Train Fionn Regan - Be Good or Be Gone Chris Smither - Leave the Light On John Prine - Killing the Blues Jeff Tweedy - New Madrid Neko Case - Star Witness [...]
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is on and I think many of us may be in that Americana/ bluegrass/ old-timey sort of mood. Hacktone Records is releasing Heartworn Highways a never-before-released soundtrack-of-sorts to the 1975 Americana documentary of the same name . It features Steve Earle, John Hiatt, Rodney Crowell, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Young, and David Allan Coe. A couple well-worth-your-while vintage Americana tunes are available from Hacktone. "Mercenary Song" is a lively upbeat song performed lived with many people joining in at the [...]

Guy Clark - Come from the Heart
In the May 14 issue of the New Yorker there is an article about guitar maker Ken Graham by Burkhard Bilger that should be fascinating for anyone who either plays guitar or has tried to play it. Or, for that matter, anyone who has surfed Ebay fantasizing about vintage Gibsons, Martins and Fenders. Among the things I learned was that building a guitar is like building a cathedral in terms of balancing the practical needs for support and the aesthetically-driven desire for pure tonal beauty. I also learned that you will never get rich making guitars by hand. [...]

Running the Drunkard has put me in touch, both through email and in person, with some great folks, many of whom have been eager to share their musical best-kept-secrets, and in the case of this post, their excellent themed compilations. The L.A. Burnout comp was mailed to me in November from a longtime reader based in NYC, which coincidental arrived at the same time I was reading two books chronicling the late sixties-early seventies Laurel Canyon incestuous music scene. The L.A. Burnout mix has since proved to have been the perfect companion piece. I [...]

A gauche, avec son ami Townes Van Zandt. Guy Clark - L.A. Freeway (MP3) Prénom : Guy. Nom de famille : Clark. Guy Clark.

The 2006 Austin City Limits Music Festival is September 15th through the 17th in Austin , in the heart of the Texas hill country. What a perfect setting for this stellar lineup of bands and music artists of all kinds...showcasing local, regional, national and international acts known worldwide. Austin City Limits is known far and wide for it's quality live shows in a studio setting, and their guest list reads like a who's who of music royalty. This lineup alone would make the $100 3-day pass worthwhile, [...]
