The Live Room is the brainchild of Ron Dukelow and Hilary Booth, both experienced music promoters, who, for ten years were the driving force behind the highly successful Live at the Talbot series at the Talbot Hotel in West Wales. It's their intention to bring the same ethos to their new venue at the Caroline Social Club to make it the best folk and [...]
This two disc set is a believable, engrossing musical play by musician Guy Davis.
Bluesman Guy Davis’ one-man show brims with humor, power, and humanity.
Several music legends joined the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators this past Friday night. Folk legends Pete Seeger and Arlo Gutherie, accompanied by musician-grandson Tao Rodriguez Seeger, composer David Amram and bluesman Guy Davis marched with throngs of people in NYC’s Upper West Side while shouting verses of protest anthems. They marched peacefully for over 30 blocks as police watched from the sidelines. The musicians took turns to play their music for the crowd, giving protestors much needed energy. Mind you, Pete is 92 years old. To have joined many in standing up for what they believe in is amazing to [...]

Acceptance speeches and awards were only a small part of what happened on stage...
How did I decide who to vote for and who did I choose?

Last night's utterly amazing Greg Brown show started off with a short solo set from perennial sideman Bo Ramsey, who played a set of hushed alt-country blues originals and an achingly delicate cover of Lucinda Williams' Joy , his hands barely brushing the strings. Brown, too, played mostly blues, when it comes down to it: recognizable chords in sixteen bars; low, quickspoken, plaintive lyrics that pulsed along with the bass string beat. Stunning stuff. Which got me thinking about the acoustic blues, and its relationship to modern folk music - not [...]
A little Delta blues from Guy! This is the title song from his 1998 album, a darn good one too! MP3 File yousendit
Sorry I have been M.I.A. for the past few weeks. I have actually been in the hospital, since apparently 22 is the new 78. Lots of backlogged posting to get caught up on, so keep an eye here over the next week for some stuff, including the long-awaited debut of derpferdheisshorst’s “Ziggy Stardust” cover. In honor of my days as the youngest person in the cardiac ward, this week’s theme is hearts. The medical accuracy of some of these songs may be suspect, but the sentiment rarely is. Amilia [...]
Sometimes I answer questions over at Yahoo Answers. A lot of the questions are asked by kids and other people who do not really understand blues music very well. I like to share my knowledge and set people on the path of understanding the blues. This question, which I think is kind of silly, because some people think that music is like a sport. They think that in the same way that you might pick the best wide receiver in the NFL you can pick the best guitarist in blues music. I personally don't think it can be [...]

Part three in a series . The heart has many hiding places, many meanings: hearts that break and mend, hearts that fail and falter, hearts that fly away after touching ours. This tiny lump of meat, its electric pulse no bigger than a battery, that flutters like a bird to tell us we are alive. And we who are human and claim to know our hearts, we forget that living hurts, and are surprised when it reminds us so often. This afternoon my children [...]

I didn't deliberately time the creation of this blog to coincide with the Jewish New Year, a day of celebration and renewal ordinarily commemorated through consumption of apples and honey in hopes of a sweet new year to come. Indeed, given the odd lunar cycle of the Jewish calendar, it is purely coincidental that we find ourselves here today, once again looking back and looking forward , in the midst of a more spiritual mandate to do the same. Problematically, however, I said it all pretty clearly back at the six-month mark. [...]

I've always been nocturnal by nature, treating the darkest hours as my own private playspace. It's in the genes: growing up in the summer vacations of my childhood, my siblings, my father and I wandered the house like ghosts until three. Until I joined the public schoolteacher's union, I'd seen the sunrise more times at the tail end of my day than the beginning. But teaching is an early riser's profession. Fight as I may, after five hours of sleep and a full day in the hallways of urban adolescent [...]
Guy Davis was born on 12th of May in 1952. He is an award winning blues guitarist, actor, and musician. I was surprised to learn that he is the son of actors Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. Talent runs in his family. He says, "his blues music is inspired by the southern speech of his grandmother." He was raised in the New York City area, but he grew up hearing accounts of life in the rural south from his parents and especially his grandparents. He is supposed to have taught himself the guitar because he [...]
