On repeat recently has been Pat Lok's first EP, No Shame which dropped last month on On The Fruit Records with remixes by Bit Funk , Goldroom , Volta Bureau and OHYEAH . This EP was highly anticipated here at Golden Scissors. After months of great singles and remixes, it seemed about the right time for an EP. The two original tracks on the EP, "No Shame" and "Yes Game" are both excellent nu-disco treats with some heavy bass-lines to keep the dancefloor shaking. When [...]

Cool as fuck disco as you'd expect from diva Gwen! Straight up laid back jam. Not only an accomplished singer-songwriter, she also sang backing vocals for Aretha Franklin , Billy Joel , Stevie Wonder , and Madonna , among others, and who wrote songs made famous by Ben E. King , and Roberta Flack . DOWNLOAD

There's a lot going on here, soul diva Gwen Guthrie delivers the Lennon and McCartney classic with production duties from Sly and Robbie then remixed by Mr.Larry Levan no less - phew! Released in 1987 from the album of the same title it's a slow chugging electro soul gem and if you tire of the vocal go straight to the dub. Gwen Guthrie - Ticket to ride

Gwen Guthrie and Larry Levan. Two icons of the Paradise Garage scene, and both passing away prematurely; Gwen at 48 from cancer and Larry at 38 from the toll taken from drug abuse. This is such a classic track. Thick and deep slap bass, low and lazy post-disco beat and a restrained diva on vocals. This became one of the real iconic Paradise tracks back in '86. It's really sad Guthrie died so early, I feel if she was alive some great things would be going down. With that, huge classics such as this remain, truely great music that rocked Paradise... DOWNLOAD/ STREAM http://www.feelmybicep.com

I've always been a big fan of this track and the remixes never disappoint. This one comes from two dudes out of Vancouver who share a passion for disco house. You can check out more of Pat Lok on his Soundcloud page. Also be sure to check out Justin Laberge and his giant collection of tracks and remixes . Gwen Guthrie - "Hopscotch" (Pat Lok & Laberge Remix) And here's the music video....too good not to post !
In the run up to his gig at Melting Pot, Glasgow, our friend Leo sent over some tasty workings from is his huge backlog of tracks, edits and remixes... Diversity such as his is few and far... DOWNLOAD/ STREAM http://www.feelmybicep.com

Gwen Guthrie - Hopscotch (Pat Lok & Laberge Remix)

If I had any concerns that I might not be able to cover the 1980s with great soul music, then I was entirely mistaken. This series will go up to 1988-89 (at which point I'll consider whether 1990-91 is worth covering). The 1982/83 season saw the continued rise of the Quiet Storm, corporate smooth soul stuff which would eventually choker the genre. There isn't much of that on this collection (and where there is, such as Beau Williams' Elvina, it's great). Opening track Time Is appeared on veteran [...]

I'M REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO THIS PARTY. SEE IT ON THE BLOGS, HEARD IT ON THE RADIO, NOW COME CHECK IT LIVE. U-TURN RARELY VISITS THE WEST COAST GWEN GUTHRIE - PEANUT BUTTER - U-TURN EDIT
. I'm not sure whether it is due to popular demand after last week's compilation, but here is a second '8s soul mix, with a third and final installment in the works. The first mix was an attempt to create a fairly representative cross-section of the genre. This mix is less self-conscious about that. What we have here, then, are some of my favourite soul tracks from that comparatively barren

This morning I watched the film Maestro , which chronicles the career of Larry Levan, and the New York disco scene of the 70's and 80's. None of that Studio 54 shit, this was Levan killing it at the Paradise Garage, David Mancuso 's parties at the Loft, and Frankie Knuckles telling crazy stories. The first part is posted above, and the rest available on You Tube, which saved me a trip to the video store. It would be pretty fucked of me to leave you guys without a Larry track, so here [...]
Funky Nassau: The Compass Point Story 1980-1986 is a stellar compilation from the recently reactivated Strut Records. I cannot recommend this compilation enough. Led by Sly & Robbie, the Compass Point Allstars were the house band for the Compass Point Studio, with producer and studio owner Chris Blackwell and his right hand man Steven Stanley behind the controls. They included keyboardist Wally
Gwen Guthrie - Hopscotch (Larry Levan instrumental mix) Twice in the last couple of weeks I've heard Gwen Guthrie's Ain't Nothin' Goin' On but the Rent playing in shops; once in my local newsagents while charging the oyster, a pleasant start to another otherwise dreary work day. I'd forgotten how good it was and I thought it might drive me to come out of semi-blog retirement. Instead I've opted for something of hers that's spacier and deeper, verbs I've used many times on DC to describe the remixing work of our [...]
Comin' atcha first thing every Monday morning, it's The Pony Track, a super-fantastic short distance dedication to BadmintonStamps Collective founding member and internationally renowned symbol for musical excellence Aaron "Pony" Child. No fancy links, no clever write-ups, 'cause these awesome songs don't need no splainin'. So c'mon, ride the pony!

The very recent passing of West End Records founder and Paradise Garage backer Mel Cheren causes me slightly less to reflect upon Mel's legacy and more so upon genius DJ/Producer Larry Levan's . Larry was the resident DJ at Mel's infamous nightclub and handled a good amount of the 12" mixes for the West End label. In the 80's Larry went on to work the mixing boards for a plethora of artists on a wide range of Disco labels including Salsoul and his [...]
