Next to share their favourites of the year is part man part canine Barry-Sean... What a fantastic year for music this has been for me. I don't just mean for music that has been produced this year but more about the music that I've discovered from previous years (or, more accurately in most cases, music that has been discovered for me). And, because I've spent a lot of time going backwards and forwards to London on the train, I've had loads of listening time. Hurrah! So here we go. Here's my top ten songs of 2011. [...]

For the second of our 'guest' top ten posts we are pleased to welcome the finger-choppin' Banner to the roster with his first contribution to the end of year best of lists. " It's been a great year musically and especially as this year I became a dad. I'd like to thank Doctor Roddy and Chris T Popper for their steady supply of CDs this year and especially for little Max's mega mix from which I've selected some of my top ten tunes. I would like to have written a bit more about the songs but unfortunately I [...]

Mark Twain turned 176 the other day - this is Ha Ha Tonka's birthday tribute. A song about him. a Follow @madmackerel

Springfield, Missouri was in the house last night at the Hi-Dive with Ha Ha Tonka and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yelstin. Bloodshot's Ha Ha Tonka are evolving into a more polished act leaving the rough edges behind on their latest album, " Death of a Decade ." But not entirely. The quartet's performance proved to be a raucous occasion with plenty of hand slapping and shit kicking. The infectious grins and serious guitar licks in a set that experienced no lulls. My only qualm, more of a suggestion is maybe they guys [...]

I'm surely not the only Midwestern music fan who instinctively compares Ha Ha Tonka to the Ozark Mountain Daredevils . While separated by about three decades, both roots-oriented acts sprung out of Springfield. Their members even bear an uncanny time-adjusted resemblance to one another. Ha Ha Tonka's November 23 show at the RecordBar reminded me that the comparison is a bit misleading. O.M.D. had a proclivity for boogie . H.H.T.'s ramshackle rock and quiet harmony singing largely avoided that tempting trap on Thanksgiving Eve. The only false step was an [...]

Another bonanza month of top tunes, all rounded up for you in one perfect download mix. Here are the September highlights together, as always, with a couple of top-notch new tracks too. Download The Migrant – The Hurricane mp3 (from Amerika) Distinguished by a slow blues refrain, handclaps and a mournful vocal, it is one of those tunes that sounds like it has been around forever. Download Diarrhea Planet – Warm Ridin' mp3 (from Loose Jewels) A magnificent cacophony of guitars, pounding bass, thundering drums and begs for [...]
One of our favorite labels, Bloodshot Records , recently released their fall sampler. Like their past samplers it's free (well, it'll cost you your email address) to download. Ha Ha Tonka's latest album Death Of A Decade is a gem and one we find ourselves playing more and more often. Original giveaway track, Usual Suspects has been hugely popular with all the Mackerel clan and associates ever since we first posted it, and to celebrate a new run of tour dates, the band have made a second single available for free download. So, grab yourself Made Example Of below and stick it on your next playlist - it is another cracker. Order Death Of A Decade here . [...]

We keep our eyes peeled for new tour dates announcements each week and compile them on Tuesdays for this handy column… After selling an estimated 70 million albums, and years of public feuding and bickering, the Brothers Gallagher finally pulled the plug on Oasis in 2009. Liam collected the pieces of their shattered band to form Beady Eye , who put out their debut album Different Gear, Still Speeding , earlier this year. Not to be outdone by his younger brother, Noel has announced the formation of a band he's [...]

If you're anything like me and want to pack in as much music as humanly possible at the UMS, you're a bit intimidated by the incredible lineup. For the record, the entire schedule is located here . In this post, I'll be giving my recommendations. Remember, sometimes it's a good idea to just hang out at a venue for a bit and hear something new. Give yourself time to wander- you'll likely stumble across your new favorite band. Also, I cannot emphasize enough that you check out this Unofficial UMS Mixtape from [...]
photo by ti-rouge I made this mix for my dear friend Amy who has- as our friend Andrea put it- a clapping fetish, but it turned into something that I really enjoy listening to. As implied, the theme of this mix was clapping. When I started collecting them for the first time I really examined which tracks included actual clapping, synthesized clapping, a tight snare hit, or just a catchy beat and decided to include them all. Since not all the songs contain actual clapping, [...]

The family and I head to Lake of the Ozarks each year and that time has come. Not too far from my parents' lake house is a Missouri State Park called Ha Ha Tonka, which inspired the name of the band Ha Ha Tonka. The fellas recently released a new video for "Usual Suspects." Seemed appropriate to share while I go offline for a bit. Warning for our younger readers: Don't drink booze on railroad tracks. There's very little upside. Ha Ha Tonka, "Usual Suspects" from Bloodshot Records [...]

Hello Ha Ha Tonka , haven't I seen you hanging around? Here we have one of those bands you feel as though you've heard but, in reality, have never come across a single note. For me, at least, but we all have a few of them. I've seen tour ads and possibly the odd feature, from whence an image of some kind of indie-pop identity sprang forth in my mind. [...]
