This is really the first real mix that I've posted in quite some time. Even so, it is more of a "some of the stuff that's come across my desk lately" list than an actual planned out and carefully sequenced mix. Even so, I still hope you enjoy. There's everything ranging from roots rock to metal and folk to sludgy stoner rock. And, yes, "Fake Empire" is a cover of the song from The National. MP3 | Lacktherof - Fake Empire Your Anchor [...]

Nick Thornton Jones/Warren Du Preez Believe it or not, Patrick Wolf is really just like the rest of us - he gets lonely, insecure and frustrated with life and at the end of the day, just wants to be loved. It just so happens that he's also a 6243 musical prodigy with a penchant for melodrama, a sartorial sense that ranges from the unusual to the outrageous and whose inner monologue of self-affirmation sounds an awful lot like Tilda Swinton. His new album The Bachelor - out [...]

I'm only tracking a few bands on Myspace, Facebook or Twitter. I'm just not that methodical or organized to follow more. For some strange reason the band Daddy is one of these few bands. I like both Tommy Womack and Will Kimbrough as solo artists. So it's a no brainer that I'd like Daddy which is the band that combines these two iconoclastic rock `n' rollers. I've written about the band here and their solo careers here and here . The band is pretty serious about their ReverbNation [...]
With Spring has come renewal on the Kansas City music scene. I started out this past Friday with a hearty, bolstering meal at Stroud's, followed by a quick drink at Jazz on 39th (where the full moon h... Being more of a fan of music of the heavier persuasion (i.e. anything that ends in the suffix "-core"), I was not initially inclined to give Bloodshot Records’ Ha Ha Tonka a try when a friend first suggested them to me. When I saw them live about a year and a half ago I was surprised to be completely won over by their country-tinged rock and four-part harmonies. Overall they’re reminiscent of Kings of Leon, with a bit more soul. Not long after I picked up their 2007 release Buckle in the Bible Belt [...]

Ha Ha Tonka's Buckle In The Bible Belt is one of the best albums I've come across in quite some time. I've spun that disc and seen the boys live countless times and have been looking forward to their sophomore follow up like very few before. When I finally got my hands on Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South , I was half expecting it to fix our economy and cure cancer just by pressing play. Obviously Ha Ha Tonka didn't consult me when they writing the album, so its sound didn't match my preconceptions. [...]

Written in 1907, The Shepherd of the Hills , a novel by Harold Bell Wright, is the story of an old, mysterious man (The Shepherd) who leaves the city for a remote hills life. Through encounters with others, he gradually learns to ?nd peace with losses he’s experienced and those yet to come. No, this isn't a book report, rather the inspiration behind Ha Ha Tonka 's much-anticipated sophomore studio album. The aforementioned novel is said to serve the as basis for Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South , an effort that will see the [...]

The artwork above was found at Colorcubic , an ultra-hip design firm that handles multimedia, print, branding, etc. This poster will be made available in their online store. We may say good riddance to 2008 as a nation, but as we posted our top 50 albums of 2008 , it was easy to reflect on an amazing year in music. I have a feeling 2009 will be even better. Here are the albums we're looking forward to in the new year. 1. The Deep Dark Woods - Winter Hours (January [...]

Justin Townes Earle , who shares half of Steve Earle's DNA and one third of Townes Van Zant's name, has an album coming in the new year. Midnight at the Movies will be released March 3 on Bloodshot Records . According to the label, the album "is held firm by Justin's astonishing vision, yet roams o'er the vast landscape of American music without so much as a stumble." If old-timey country is your thing, this will likely tickle your fancy. He's on the road for a big chunk of [...]

It's the season of giving and we want to get in the spirit. PopWreckoning would like to give you a pair of concert tickets to see Split Lip Rayfield and Ha Ha Tonka this Friday, Dec. 12, 2008 at the Beaumont Club in Kansas City, MO . Split Lip Rayfield is a bluegrass, alt-country act from Wichita, KS and credited as helping to define the "Thrash-grass" genre. The band gained a large following after the releases of In The Mud and Never Make It Home . [...]

While the first annual Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival seemed to offer very little in the form of traditional Bluegrass or Blues music, from an enjoyment standpoint the festival was a success and headliners, the Avett Brothers , were the main reason behind that success. Just placing the Avett Brothers in the headlining spot signaled that this was not going to be any sort of traditional bluegrass or blues festival but in the end this worked in the festival's favor. There is probably a reason that, as the festival website [...]

Here's a little something funky from Gwil Owen . Gwil's been in a number of influential band since the early seventies but has also been a successful songwriter for Toni Price, Allison Moore, Kevin Gordon, Keith Richards and Levon Helm. "Gravy" won't win any awards for creativity but it's organ and guitar driven funk and roll will get your Friday night party started right. Gwil Owen's new record Gravy is available now from Cd Baby here . Gravy Bonus songs from 1999's Magnetic Heaven [...]
