But for precisely that reason, I can't see myself smiting my brow with shock or hear myself whining about how it's all so unfair: I have been taunting the Reaper into taking a free scythe in my direction and have now succumbed to something so predictable and banal that it bores even me. Rage would be beside the point for [...]

The Scottish music scene is undeniably city-centric. If a band isn't doing the rounds of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee or Inverness then, for many people, they might as well not exist. Yet that would mean missing out on a massive amount of talent, and that talent tends to avoid the derivative, scenestery, cliché-addled sound which often comes from being part of a much wider network. It also helps that these music-making islanders can take inspiration from the most beautiful scenery Scotland has to offer and bring those pure thoughts with them if they decide to head [...]

photo by Mustafah Abdulaziz 1. The Magic - "Mr Hollywood" (mp3) Geordie Gordon (Bar Mitzvah Brothers/Salt Lick Kids) is a real James Dean-type. His hair is properly groomed and coifed to 50s perfection. The Guelph-based singer-songwriter has honed his skills for the Magic—a spunky indie-pop group. "Mr Hollywood" emanates waves of orchestral, feel-good melody. Expect huge things from the Magic as they recently concluded a stint opening for Islands... 2. OiNK was right and wrong, but there's so much bullshit flying around on both sides that taking the time to call all of it will take longer than reclassifying your entire music library by legality. Sure, people do "buy the CD," in the words of Alan the admin , but if you believe it's actually "a lot," we'd like your signature on this medical marijuana form, too . The traditional press accounts have been riddled with errors, and every single possible analogy is being trotted out as ammunition for bloggy showdowns either way, despite the fact that argument [...]
I suppose I should be talking about the Radiohead album. I don't know about the music, but it's pretty interesting how they're delivering it. In case you don't know, you can download the album from 10th October, and basically pay however much you want for it. Which may be nothing, if that's what you want. Alternatively there's a pretty lush looking vinyl & CD box set that'll set you back 40
We know two things about Orkney: it looks cold; it's where Half Cousin are from. Is their name a little joke about the close-knit nature of small island communities? Probably. If not then we're sorry we mentioned it.
Dear friends, I first listened to The Function Room by Half Cousin on a train ride from London to Liverpool in 2004*. I let its warm, sinister crunch provide the soundtrack to several hours of whizzing power lines. A perfect combination of movement and music. Half Cousin still sounds like travel but it no longer seems like a straight trajectory. Jim's Crash Memory pops out at you, all bounce

Tori Amos "Big Wheel" - Even though she gave me every reason to ignore and/or dislike her recent work, I was very wrong to assume that it was all over for Tori Amos. She's a clever and immensely talented woman, but much like Bjork, her last few records were burdened by cumbersome and not especially compelling concepts, an emphasis on her least endearing quirks, and a curious lack of playfulness. The last point was the most troubling for me -- both Amos and Bjork's best work gained strength from their peculiar sense of humor and willful perversity, [...]
