Let's keep the New Zealand theme of the day rolling. Great North released their album, Halves, back in May and I've just now sat down to really listen to it. If you're into country music, then you'll find Halves to be a nice discovery. Personally, I cannot stand listening to country music. Thankfully, Great North's music is folky and alternative enough for me to enjoy the bit of twang that's heard throughout Halves. Overall, Great North's sound is really great to experience when you're in the mood for something laid back and relaxing. Halves is just a nice, down to [...]

Here's one record I'm definitely going to pick up on Saturday for Record Store Day. Before Christmas, Halves played the Unitarian Church in Dublin. They recorded the gig and are releasing it on vinyl on Saturday. We've already had a video of the performance, 'Darling, You'll Meet Your Maker', and [Read more]

While Halves' recorded output is atmospherically rich and grandiose in its instrumentation, live, the experience is more easily relatable. Which may have influenced the decision of the band to release a live album recorded in December at Dublin's Unitarian Church. 'Haunt Me When I'm Drowsy' is injected by the natural aura of the church setting on the live recording and is further bolstered by the addition by Jennifer Evans on vocals and members of 3Epkano on strings. Moreish and minimal. Here's a live video from the gig of 'Darling, You'll Meet Your Maker' by [...]
I had the distinct pleasure of finally seeing Halves play in Cork on Friday night. Debut album It Goes, It Goes (Forever & Ever) was released last year following a number of EPs and led to some support slots in the city; but I never got to see them. This [Read more]

Stavrogin - Halves London bread forward-thinker Stavrogin (birthed Theo Moore) has compiled his debut EP, Halves , through the newly established Courtship Records . The release toggles through Moore's two-step percussion, James Blake-esc synth work, and cerebral vocal sampling that'll find its way deep into your subconscious. You can grab the entire EP on donation-base payment over on Courtship Records' bandcamp . In the mean time, grab our pick of the litter, "Halves," above.

It impressed us as a venue for the recent John Vanderslice gig and now the Unitarian Church on Stephen's Green in Dublin is going to pay host to three more live events. Elevens kick things off with an EP launch show on November 11th, followed by Delorentos on 25th and Halves (pictured and surely a band born to play such a venue) with special guests Jennifer Evans and the 3epkano string section on December 9th.
Saw these chaps and chapesses at Electric Picnic earlier this year. By chance, I stumbled on their performance in a drunkon stupor, and was instantly taken in by the shed load of instruments they had on show. Thankfully, they knew how to use them, and by the end of the show I’d sobered up and managed to find out what they were called. I picked up their debut LP a couple of weeks ago, and most excellent it is too. If you haven’t already, go buy their album here . It’s proper good.

The Joinery in Dublin have announced their very first offsite event. This event is a fundraiser – monies raised will be used to allay some of the operating costs inevitable with running an alternative art space in Dublin. Donal Mangan (who made SEBP's 'Comets' video ) has made the latest video for Halves' 'Darling, You'll Meet Your Maker'. It's like a really dark Fingerbobs adventure. Samantha Cardow With festivals come hard choices, and for this year's edition of Canadian Musicfest , getting underway with a handful of events tonight and in earnest as of tomorrow, I am choosing to eschew the club-hopping-ness that typically comes with these sorts of fest and largely plant myself in one place for each evening. Hard choice or lazy choice? A little of both. But just because I am staying put doesn't mean that I recommend others do the same. So by way of festival preview, here's a list of stuff that [...]
