It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]
![Ham1: It's Only A Dream Unto Itself [mp3]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3026941_lg.jpg)
It's difficult to describe the encapsulating power behind Ham1 . The Athens-based band's latest album, Let's Go On And On And On With Ham 1 , is perhaps most engrossing release in their half-decade career. "It's Only A Dream Unto Itself" is one of the album's top tracks, molding together a unique array of rock, folk, country and psychedelic for a sound that hints of wide influences from local friends Dark Meat, to the grunge master J. Mascis himself, to the epic genius John Cale. [...]

Try to describe the sound of HAM1 and the name dropping begins. Think Johnny Dowd fronting the 13th Floor Elevators, with The Beatles ca 1966 and Velvets (in their White Light/White heat phase) references. In other words: howling feedback, surprisingly melodic, off beat, quirky and laid-back wrapped as a present that might go "boom" in your face. The band are at hand with some band aids to patch you up and say they are truly sorry. Let's Go On and On and On with HAM1 is the brain child of Athens, GA, [...]
Monday, September 27, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: Anyone heading out to Stubb's tonight for Ratatat? I'm really tempted to try and go, but I've seen them before and I doubt their show will be too different. Also, there's a part of me that thinks it would be a better idea to hit up Emo's for Casiotone For The Painfully Alone's farewell tour stop in Austin. Or maybe I'll just watch Monday Night Football. So many choices. And now, some music. Enjoy. [...]

Athens, Ga.'s Ham12s newest album "Let's Go On and On and On with Ham13 releases on October 31 on Orange Twin Records Through the last half-decade or so, Jim Willingham's ever-expanding canon-of-song has become somewhat of an Athens, Georgia institution; in that rough interval, he and his band Ham1 have performed extensively amid the vaunted downtown music scene, toured a good bit, and recorded no fewer than four full-length albums that both reflect and expand upon that locale's long-noted proclivity toward idiosyncratic narrative and a psychedelicized instrumental approach to fleshing elemental chord changes into full-blooded songs. Ham12s newest [...]

Over the last two or three weeks we've probably received more tracks to MM than ever before. Not that we're complaining, especially when the quality has been really high. It does mean we're struggling to do everything justice though and while (in a perfect MM world) many of these tracks deserve their own post, we've decided to round up a bunch in one go for you. So take a chance, and download something new. First up are raucous lo-fi electro punk four-piece, What Would Jesus Drive and their new EP [...]

I know I once again flaked on posting, but I've had a cold for the past couple of weeks that just doesn't know when to leave. Kind of like the creepy, wasted guy at the afterparty who can't seem to catch a hint. I'm feeling quite well today, so I took advantage of the better health and spent pretty much this entire day catching up on email and snail mail submissions. And to make up for my delay, today's post is going to be a massive one. I hate to say that I won't be able to give [...]

When I listen to Ham1's newest album, The Underground Stream (which you can get for free via Ham1's website ), I can't help but think of ham radio. A device that connects you to a massive world of sounds and thoughts. You never know what you'll pick up. That's my impression of Ham1 as well. Sometimes lo-fi, sometimes, punk, sometimes surf, sometimes everything all at once. It can be a bit displacing at times, but really you can't ask for anything more from chief songwriter Jim Willingham. He's putting all the card on the table and we [...]

During a busy summer, backing Vic Chesnutt in Europe, touring with Elf Power, and recording with Liz Durrett as her backing band on, Outside Our Gates , Ham1 somehow found the time to hit the studio. With the help of engineer Jason Nesmith of Casper & the Cookies, they found time to record their follow-up to last year's acclaimed Orange Twin release The Captain's Table . Named The Underground Stream, the album continues the enigmatic path charted by Ham1 , a band whose sound is familiar but [...]

Before we hosted that Elf Power show not too long ago, it had been quite a while since we gave Athens, GA's Ham1 some hot, steamy blog lovin'. We invited lead signer Jim Willingham and his crew [Eric Harris (Elf Power, Olivia Tremor Control), Jacob Morris, and Chris Sugiuchi] into our studio to record an MOKB/SIRIUS session and while there he told us that they would soon be giving their new album, along with all previous, away for free on the [...]
