it's old and dusty, but somewhere between kinky lines and nerdy dancing lies the future of electro: pfunkt - asap hangar 18 - bakin' soda (pfunkt remix) mochipet - vneck (pfunkt remix)

from roughly 1994 until 2000, hip hop was completely dead to me. it wasn't until i came across aesop rock's float and the deltron 3030 record that my interest in the genre began to flourish for a possible round two, round one being from '88 - '94. during the younger days of hip hop, i fully immersed myself into the music and it made a big impact on my later listening habits. but i got truly tired of the inconsistency. i could never depend on an artist/crew to put out two or three succesive records of good to [...]

They had me hooked with the album title, a nod to the crucial line in Karate Kid that seems to attract musicians like free liquor and prog rock (it was bastardized by the Chicago-based rockers "Sweep the Leg, Johnny!" in the 90s). Like a Brooklyn-born Daniel-san kickin' it in California, the rappers in Hangar 18 might seem a little out of place on stage with luminaries like Big Daddy Kane, Talib Kweli and Mos Def, not to mention KRS One. But the boys – Tim "Alaska" Baker, Ian "Windnbreeze" McMullin and DJ paWL – after having [...]

T here isn't much in the way of new releases for this week. As a result, this new epimisode ( number 91 if you're counting) of Festival City Radio is chok-full of some more new releases for October 23: Castanets - " Sway " (0) iLIKETRAINS - "The Deception" (5:00) Subtle - "Deathful" (9:40) David Gahan - "Kingdom" (13:40) Phosphorescent - " A Picture of [...]

I definitely had a good time away these past few days, but I'm glad to be back and sharing some new music with you guys. The next few posts should be pretty awesome, since I seem to have a small backlog of really good stuff that I want to share. To start, one of my rare hip-hop posts. I seem to only post anything of this sort when it's really worth posting, and Hangar 18 are definitely worth the mention. I've been a little disappointed with hip-hop the last couple of years, but recent releases by artists like [...]
MC Alaska lets rip @ Philaflava... "I think at the time she was dating someone from 'Sex in the City'. He had an apartment right next to the old office I used to work at. So I was outside, I used to smoke cigarettes, I was outside having a cigarette, and she just basically walked [...]
Apparently I would have just looked bad if I ran off to the internets to complain about the Dr. Who finale just after it ended, so I've waited a bit. I'm not sure how that's meant to help anything though. Despite the annoying 'flashback syndrome' you tend to get with two-parters, it was actually quite good until the last 15 minutes, when it became almost unbearably ridiculous and laced with laughable undertones. Conceptually, of course, it's something that's been discussed and theorised over many times, with varying degrees of plausibility - I mean, Erich von Daniken 's [...]
Tracey Thorn - Get Around To It Out Of The Woods The voice of EBTG is back. I've given the record a couple of spins and I like the uptempo stuff a lot, the slow stuff not so much. This is a cover of an Arthur Russell song (from his Calling Out Of Context album) and is really quite good. RJD2 - Just When The Third Hand Wherein RJD2 continues his shift from underground hip hopper to plaintive pop
It seems Def Jux is a little jealous of Stones Throw Records collaborations with animated panic-spreading geniuses Adult Swim so they decided to get on the free mixtape action too. Its called Definitive Swim and features tracks from Def Jukies Aesop Rock, Cage, Mr. Lif, Rob Sonic, El-P amongst others. You can download the album as a zip with the artwork and all. I know the Aesop and El-P tracks are new as theyre from their forthcoming album. Before you get it though, have a look at the tracklisting and listen to a few of the tunes below. They also [...]
