Initially a Glasgow based club night, Hunters & Palmers has since taken their party-starting antics to London and, more recently, branched out into a label. Their first release dropped in April from newcomer Auntie Flo (what I thought was a really cute and cuddly artist name… until I realised what it meant). His debut EP 'Goan Highlife' was of the raw and earthy tribalist ilk, but imbued with real melody and groove. The flip was a refreshing slice of heavily looped hollow percussion sitting behind a big kick drums and some ethnic chanting. The EP was just as likely to [...]

Oh, Bonnaroo . You do it to us every time. Year by year, over 80,000 people make the pilgrimage to a field in the middle of nowhere, Tennessee to camp for four days in the blistering heat with little to no refuge and more dust than anyone should be able to handle. That sounds kinda miserable, right? How then, you might ask, did Bonnaroo make it to this, their 10th year? I think that can be summed up in their newfound theme song, by the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, "Bonnaroo (Feel the Magic)". [...]

Auntie Flo is the alter ego of Glaswegian-Goan DJ Brian d'Souza . With forthcoming releases due on vinyl in February on the newly formed Huntleys & Palmers Records , 2011 looks like being a great year for the new producer. We have had a listen to the new EP's and will bring them to you soon! As a wee taster the Auntie Flo edit of Mongolian band Hanggai is available for free with a great video by filmmaker Ling Lee to accompany it. [...]

Call me crazy, but I have a sort of tumultuous relationship with music. Like most relationships, we experience ups and downs, highs and lows, loyalty and betrayal. Usually we talk every day, but

Sunday morning greet us with an overcast day – a blessed relief after three days of relentless sun. Last night's late activities have taken their toll and it's a shaky State that shuffles up to Peter Doherty in the Arena tent. Shockingly, he is actually a few minutes early on stage and relatively fresh. It's a solo, acoustic show but his guitar comes across loud and dirty and the mood of it all suits our condition very well. He makes two attempts to play that oh-so-obvious cover, 'Billie Jean' but justifiably abandons [...]

Hanggai - 'Introducing Hanggai' (World Music Network) Hanggai are a Beijing-based group. They specialise in adaptations of songs from the inner grasslands of Inner Mongolia. This is their debut album, and stands as one of the most astoundingly beautiful albums I have heard this year. This album has already picked up some excellent reviews, and deserevdly so. Whilst I don't knowingly understand a word of what they are singing, at least until I read through the lyrics on the web , at the risk of descending into cliche, there are times when the music-making and [...]

Hanggai is set to play White Heat at Madame Jojo's , London, Tuesday 9th September, 2008. Hanggai are a Beijing-based group of Mongolian musicians, some of whom originally hail from China's Inner Mongolia province. Their music is based on traditional songs from the inner Mongolian grasslands, and the folkloric sound palette is further enriched by adding unobtrusive electric guitar, bass, banjo, programming and crisply atmospheric percussion. Two of the members play the morin khuur (horse-hair fiddle), while another plays the tobshuur (a two-stringed lute), and these [...]
Filed under: Around the World Spinner.com : As you've no doubt seen via coverage surrounding the Olympic Games, it's harder and harder to escape the modern world in Beijing these days. So it's no surprise that Ilchi (no last name), of the band Hanggai, based in the Chinese capital, cites some... Read more
