"I wanna be straight, I wanna be straight, I'm sick and tired of taking drugs and staying up late..." Following up on a conversation with faithful reader Holly in the post below this one, here's a fun showdown between messrs. Richman and Dury. And as a chaser: a hot quartet of not so straight jazz cuts. The Modern Lovers - I'm Straight Ian Dury & The Blockheads - I Wanna Be Straight Art Pepper - Straight Life Thelonious [...]

Released in 1960, Hank Mobley's record Soul Station boasts the cast of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Blakey on drums in addition to his own tenor saxophone playing. Soul Station is known for being one of Mobley's most successful records but if you are not familiar with his sound, let me put it like this. Mobley was referred to as the "Middle weight champion of the tenor saxophone" by Leonard Feather because his playing was not as aggressive [...]

"I'm too busy!" "Life is hectic!" "There's so much going on!" "I'm working too hard!" Bitches, please. If I - a man possessing almost no energy whatsoever - can successfully hold down a regular job plus two extracurricular jobs, a blog, a social life, a personal life, and a somewhat-rigorous four-day-a-week exercise regimen…you don't get [...]

One quality of a truly remarkable performance is that there is often one note and/or one phrase that can encapsulate the grace, fire, virtuosity, subtlety, or authenticity of the artist. I believe it is the duty of all L isteners and P erformers to seek out, catalog, & utilize these gestures as references to further inform their aural pallets. I was recently struck by a fleeting gesture from pianist Wnyton Kelly during Hank Mobley's recording of The Best Things In Life Are Free . It [...]

Hank Mobley : Funk In Deep Freeze [ purchase ] Hardbopper Hank Mobley´s artistry was always a bit underappreciated during his lifetime, as he just wasn´t as innovative a tenor player as contemporaries John Coltrane or Sonny Rollins. Which in rock terms would mean dissing the Kinks for not being as groundbreaking as the Beatles or the Stones. Take Mobley for what he could do and you´ll find a true sax great with a [...]
Work was not fun today. Not even "Subway Sunday" could brighten my mood. Oh well, it happens, I guess. I have a busy week ahead of me. I think. Right now I'm looking forward to my days off. I'm very tired. Of course, I have to take my car to be serviced early Wednesday morning, so I won't have an opportunity to sleep in on that day. Curses! Hey, how about a mix tape? RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be [...]

I had a strenuous day at work, helping to re-price all the jazz LPs in the store. It entailed pulling all the records and lugging them to the back of the store, re-pricing them, and then lugging them back out to the floor and reorganizing them. While that was happening, I had to help one of the girls at the front counter by providing her with $2.99 records that needed to be priced. So I had to lug all those records from back to front and then back again for storage. When full, the LP boxes weigh about 70 pounds, [...]

I'm in a rotten mood tonight. I don't want to talk about it. Everything just kind of sucked at work today, which is ironic considering it's supposed to be such a low-stress environment. Rather than bore you with details pertaining to the mundane events I am probably overreacting to, I'll simply skip ahead to the mix tape. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there [...]
