"New Partner," the brilliant ballad from Palace Music 's bar-setting, perfect 1995 collection Viva Last Blues , is the second-greatest song Will Oldham has written, in our humble opinion. His best song is the distressingly sad (to the extent we can't bring ourselves to listen to it sometimes) but absurdly titled "You Have Cum In Your Hair And Your Dick Is Hanging Out." But that is a topic for another day. Over a recent weekend we wondered to ourselves why no one had ever covered "New Partner," and moseyed on over to YouTube to see what [...]

I'm a Hank Williams fan.... who isn't?? I may not have mentioned anything about the crooner here before, but for any fan of country music, it kinda goes without saying. I've also never tried to amass any kind of complete recordings collection of Hank's - I grab a track when I come across one and buy a random CD when I find it. So for that reason, I'm not afraid to admit I first heard today's One-Hitter when it was featured as the theme song for a short-run HBO animated series. [...]
Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't, Hank III is whiskey bent and hellbound.
Far be it from me to endorse any of the activities mentioned in the Hank III-penned song dedicated to GG Allin. But his music makes me kinda wanna.

Lissie - Wedding Bells (Hank Williams cover) Maybe it's due to the fact I'm a sucker for reverb, but I'm pretty sure it's the combination of Lissie's beautiful voice and the reverb is the reason I'm so in love with this song. I'm going to be a tad disappointed if this song doesn't make it to the Copy Cats tumblr because this is so lovely. This awesome, awesome cover of Hank Williams comes off a newly released 5-song EP called Why You Runnin' , which can pick up the MP3 album over at [...]
Filed under: The Hit List Halloween is the time of year to welcome the spirits of those who have gone before us. In the music industry, though, every day is El Dia de los Muertos , especially when los muertos can be reanimated to ensure more record sales. "It's f---ing weird to be doing a song with someone who is deceased," as Korn 's Jonathan Davis once said. Give [...]

Today's selection is a guest post from a long time reader of MISB and frequent commenter Jane. Previously this year Jane wrote a lovely review of Kate York 's album For You , and today she was kind enough to share her beautifully written opinion of Rosanne Cash 's latest, The List . -Sean -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -=-=-=-=-=-=- Rosanne Cash 's The List is not the typical covers album. It features the singer-songwriter's [...]

As some of you might know, I play bass in a couple of bands of the Punk genre. My lack of musical ability makes my choices perfect. Bass ( 4 strings, 2 less than guitar ), and Punk ( even I can play 5 notes ) and of course, my ever sunny disposition. My ever understanding wife has given me free reign to exorcise my demons in this manner, bless her little heart. One of my bands, Dirty Pillows; has got a gig on Long Island in Amityville (yes, the home of this) tomorrow (Sat Oct [...]

We don't know about the rest of you ne'er-do-wells, but we're standing by our man David Letterman during this whole sex-with-employees/extortion mess. Having the National Organization for Women asking for your head on a platter can't be too much fun, y'know? But after a week of scandal and speculation, we've had enough time to reflect on what's happened and offer up some constructive ideas for how to lighten the mood around the Ed Sullivan Theater. We'd suggest that the Late Show 's ace bandleader, Paul Shaffer , incorporate a few new tracks into their already impressive [...]

For many years now, one of the best bands in Philadelphia has been John Train. On stage and on record, lead vocalist and songwriter Jon Houlon does a deft job of mixing his great own songs with some well chosen covers pretty seamlessly. At his side since the beginning, playing amazingly on all kinds of guitars has been Mike Brenner, known for his excellent work with Marah and with his own band Slo-Mo. They've both been backed up by a talented group of musicians. The current lineup includes Steve Demarest (bass), Bill Fergusson (mandolin), Mark Tucker (guitar), and Mark [...]
Hank Williams, Jr. hit the campaign trail with a stop in Minnesota on Sunday night. Naw, I'm just pullin' your leg.

Filed under: News Esteemed alt-country singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams plans to get married later this month at the famous Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue. According to the Star Tribune , Williams will follow the lead of one of her musical heroes, Hank Williams, who also married the second time around onstage back in 1952, when she ties the knot with former Best Buy executive and her current manager, Tom Overby, during her Sept. 18 gig. For Williams, 56, the venue has a special meaning as it was one of her [...]

I recently ripped some vinyl into mp3s, and below is a selection of some of those albums. Since these are old records and I'm too lazy to digitally clean up each song, you'll hear a crackling on each track, but perhaps a few of you will think that's charming. The password, as always, is Chasing.Red. - two words, two capitals, two periods. Enjoy, and drop me a note with your reactions to any of the albums. Song: Empty Bed Blues Part 1 by Bessie Smith [...]
Holly Williams doesn't need a team of Nashville choreographers and songcrafters to spruce her up, country music is in her blood

Not long after a tour with/and mostly due to the prompting of Michael Gira , Asthmatic Kitty artist Ray Raposa, also known as Castanets , recorded a series of seven Hank Williams covers in 2008. Ray was living with his friend, Nathan, for a few months, when he decided to go ahead with the idea... " We did this record kinda haphazard and casual around the house during a long stretch of rain in February. We set up semi-circle in the living room, and a lot [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Rosanne Cash fought long and hard to establish herself apart from her father and away from the shadow of his legendary career. As she herself is quick to point out, it's a common desire for kids to have. But when your father is the Man in Black (that'd be the late Johnny Cash ), it's not exactly easy. And at some point, you stop trying. Not because you give up but because you finally embrace your family's heritage and [...]
Country-clad strangers huddled around the bar and red-lit couches, holding beers and cookies rather than guns. The DJ played Hank Williams between bands until they ran out of his material, then Loretta Lynn took over. Chilling on the tiered seating beneath The Cowboy Show's intimate vibe, the audience sat rapt, almost hypnotized, every time a band took stage.
Of all the cinematic archetypes, the down and out hero with a heart of gold seems to be one of the better clichés. And no better man fills that part than country music deity Hank Williams , whose life is getting the film treatment courtesy of Universal. Thanks to Variety (via TwentyFourBit ), we've learned that the premier studio has acquired the rights to create a biopic and has enlisted Children of Men 's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman (of Strike Entertainment) to introduce the musician with 11 [...]

In the past few years, it's practically become trendy to make films about country legends. Everyone from undisputed master of the genre Johnny Cash to underappreciated genius Townes Van Zandt has made it to the big screen. Like those luminaries, Hank Williams lived the kind of dramatic, painful life that fueled great music - and now it's his turn to get the biopic treatment. The man most of us know from such classic singles as "Hey Good Lookin'" and "Your Cheatin' Heart" didn't live to see [...]
Screaming Females fire right down the middle between Husker Du , Damaged Black Flag and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and occupy more psychic space as an irreducibly solid three-piece than bands several times their age and weight combined. There are many gerunds that begin with 'S in English and they use the ten best in every set. Their newest Power Move is out now on Don Giovanni. This interview by Chris Ziegler.
