February 13 is a bad day for a breakup. Not really worse than any other day of the year, I suppose, but I'm using it as an excuse to substantiate my hatred of Valentine's Day. Then again, maybe Valentine's Day isn't all bad. It recently inspired Vancouver singer-songwriter Hannah Georgas to record a love song, "The Right Time," which she has now released as a free download just in time for the big day. It's a sugary piano ditty, featuring Tyler Bancroft of Said the Whale on vocal harmonies, and its charmingly romantic [...]
photo of Pick A Piper December, January and February. Three months where I can reflect on music I missed out on during the past year. Can't wait. In doing some 2009 research, here are five Canadian bands that I have discovered in the past few months that I am going to keep an eye out for in 2010. Enjoy: Pick A Piper - A collective of sound artists featuring Brad Weber of Caribou, Angus Fraser of Tenth of May, Dan Roberts ex-Winter Equinox and Clint Scrivener. If [...]
Yesterday, Vancouver's indie/folk-pop ingénue Hann ah Georgas walked away with CBC Radio 3 's Bucky Award for "Best New Artist". Not 10 minutes later, I received a text from a friend letting me know that Radio 3's best new artist was somehow missing from my blog that was supposed to highlight best new artists; she quickly followed this up with a comment regarding the amount of time I invest in fantasy football. First of all, I'm aware that fantasy football is not considered a sport. Secondly, I was waiting for someone to post Let's Talk to YouTube, as I think [...]

Filed under: News , Canada The voice of Canadian music fans was heard loud and clear on Wednesday as CBC Radio 3 awarded top honours to artists such as Said the Whale , Joel Plaskett and Sloan , as part of the station's annual listener-voted Bucky Awards. Vancouver's Dan Mangan was the clear front-runner in the radio soirée hosted by CBC Radio 3 host Grant Lawrence. Cleaning up with nods for Best Vocals and Best Song for his infectious [...]

Whenever I've talked about Hannah Georgas , it's always been in terms of her enormous potential. This isn't to devalue what's she's already done, as The Beat Stuff is an excellent debut, containing two bona fide show stoppers ("The National" and "All I Need"). But while the EP rarely strayed from pleasant folk pop, her explosive live show showed that there was much more to her than just another songstress in the vein of Sarah Harmer or Kathleen Edwards . Georgas recently issued The Quarter EP [...]

Other than the fact we are hosting a showcase – oh, did we not mention that today – Valleys, Bruce Peninsula, The Got to Get Got and York Dedoubt???? – the best part about Halifax Pop Explosion is that it's the one time of the year where the beacon of our national scene shines directly on Canada's ocean playground. East Coast bias is politely left at the door, drinks are shared, donairs are carved and for four days, amazing bands litter the downtown instead of mullets and power drinkers. There are tons [...]
Hannah Georgas - All I Need (mp3) ( buy ) Vancouver singer-songwriter Hannah Georgas ( myspace ) has half the checklist of things that raise my ire, seems determined to put them down. Her pen paints nature in personifications both creaky (the sun peeks out to play, willows chat) and cliché (the air nips noses). She sings along with the birds (possibly to Counting Crows ). She dresses herself in iPod contents (" Fists Up " by The Blow , speaking of, has anyone heard anything from Khaela [...]
As often happens in cases like these where bands take the stage at all hours, sometime you just can't get there in time to see a whole set. And that happened to me again last night. The problem is that you stop off at a venue to see one band and either you have to leave them early to catch a band you want to see or you come in half-way through. So last night I ended up catching part of Piper Davis's set at The Drake (Underground) and half of Foxfire Forest's set at the El [...]
Friday was Day 3 at NXNE. Here's a quick look at what I saw:Holly ThrosbyThis Aussie singer/songwriter played an afternoon set at Yonge-Dundas Square. Her sound was overwhelmed by the traffic at one of the noisiest corners in the city, not to mention the folks on speakers in the market area trying to hauk their energy drinks, etc. Not the best place to see her, but what was audible sounded
I had the opportunity to speak with Canadian singer/songwriter Hannah Georgas prior to her in-store performance at Criminal Records last night. She is a talented and charming musician. If you haven't heard her EP yet, you need to run and get it.Here's our conversation on a cold and noisy Queen West corner:T.O. Snob: It's nice to meet you. I've heard the EP finally and it's fantastic.Hannah
Here's a recap of the events I managed to hit on Friday at Canadian Music Week.Hannah Georgas @ Criminal RecordsAn in-store performance for a young woman who has been compared to both Kate Nash and Feist. I'd say either Zooey Deschanel with a mean streak or what Emily Haines' solo album should have sounded like. I did a sit down with Hannah as well which will be posted soon.Hannah Georgas'

Hannah Georgas is a quirky Canadian indie/pop songwriter whose debut EP The Beat Stuff was just released nationwide January 27th. Her songs are the infectious sort, with toe-tapping hooks, lyrics that perfectly dance with the folksy strums of the guitar ("Let's talk about Lo-ah-ah-ah-ve, let's laugh about li-ah-ah-ah-fe") and topped with the delicate yet prominent female songwriter voice thats
CMW is an annual music festival held in Toronto which showcases bands from across Canada and as well around the world. This is a great time for our great Canadian talent to get some global recognition, and is also a great time for music lovers to see 3 days of amazing music without travelling around to see it. The host hotel and central hub of activity will be the luxurious Fairmont Royal York Hotel. The music related part of the festival features four nights of performances by over 500 Canadian and International artists. I thought it would be a [...]

Hannah Georgas is a quirky, highly-sensitive, whimsical, and yet extremely serious Vancouver-based singer/ songwriter who will one day win over Jack Black and take his hand in marriage. Born and raised in one of the many suburbs of the T-Dot, she wrote her first song on the piano at the age of 5. In her formative years, inspired by late night summer jam sessions around camp fires Hannah chose the guitar as her primary instrument, and constant companion. Influenced by a broad scope of musical talent - from Billy Corgan and his melancholy lyrics to Janet [...]
