It's a well documented obsession that I have with Brother Ali, but one that I stand by without a shred of self-consciousness. I see literally NOTHING to not like about the guy. He's overcome a bunch of hurdles in his life - blindness, poverty, albinism - and come out the other side with a positive attitude, a good message, and a phenomenal way of spreading it. Street preacher indeed. To top off all the good message vibes, he has a flow like few others. He absolutely rips verses all over the place, [...]
Do you remember the band Delorean? Following up their excellently danceable debut LP Transatlantic KK , Delorean have just released a similarly enjoyable EP entitled Ayrton Senna . Delorean construct grandly textured rhythms complete with handclaps and rich female vocals. If you're in need of some well-done, upbeat electronic dance music, check out Delorean. With their sense of rhythm, Delorean remind me of a more Euro (Spanish to be exact, I think) version of !!!, whom I love unconditionally. I wish they would release something new soon. Delorean - Deli ( YSI ) [...]

I am dead serious! There is something about this electro/disco/sunshine pop song that blows me away every time I listen to it. Music always has the ability to influence an emotion but We & Lisa's new song Independence completely takes over me. This upcoming band from Sweden We & Lisa released their album Dreams Within A Dream on March 31 2009 on the Nebraska label Series Two Records. The album consists of the Ana E.P. and edited 2009 versions of tracks from previous E.P.'s. We Lisa - Independence. [...]

Its Saturday and I'm at work again. Luckily there's a pretty sweet FREE concert this afternoon at City Hall Plaza in Boston sponsored by the great local radio station WFNX. Metric, Passion Pit, the Gasslight Anthem, Ra Ra Riot and The Bravery are all playing this evening starting at 4:30 or 5 PM. Go see it! I am definitely heading over after work. Check out this Sleepyhead remix. Its practically a cover by Ellie Goulding (*heart*). Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Starsmith Remix feat. Ellie Goulding) ( YSI ) [...]

Its Sunday and I'm up in Maine again either reading a book by the ocean or cutting down some trees. Based on yesterday's post, you can bet I'm listening to a lot of Meursault this weekend. In addition to Meursault, a couple of other artists whom have perked up my ears recently are the massive collaboration of Monsters of Folk and Atlas Sound. I am not really going to get into the tracks too much, besides the observation that Walkabout is an absolute jam with unstoppable momentum. What a great song, oh yeah and Say Please is nothing [...]

Yo, Bergen is in Norway. A beautiful town surrounded by mountains and filled with lovely small houses. This town has also spawned a lot of great acts. Casiokids single Finn Bikkjen ! is out on Moshi Moshi's singles club on August 3rd, and to prove their awesomeness live here's an video of them performing in a hot-air balloon. How awesome is that? Almost as awesome as this cat! They are like Architecture In Helsinki with a Nordic touch. This is music MADE for festivals [...]

In my mind there are only a few artists that can hold their own solely on remixes. They make their name in the remix game, do what they do really well, and only remix tunes that will sound good under the knife. Black Dominoes is one such artist. He's selective about where he practices his craft, putting out only a sprinkling of reworks since he first go into the remix game, but when he does flex his steez, he does it with authority. I first heard Black Dominoes through his great remix [...]

I've never heard of this band before. I've never heard of this song before. I have no idea when I got this song. It is awesome. Perfect sunny summer pop. Your Twenties is a new band fronted by Gabriel Stebbing, the bassist/keyboardist from Metronomy. They have crafted the ideal mix of upbeat, catchy, and light to really capture summer. Your Twenties sound like what might have happened if the Beach Boys listened to a lot of Passion Pit. I can't stop listening [...]
Despite a faltering economy, Iceland has extraordinary things brewing in its local music scene. We all already know about Sigur Ros, but Sin Fang Bous is primed to emerge next from the continental rift. Channeling a thick, jittery folk sound reminiscent of Gobbledigook, minus its grand sense of majesty, Sin Fang Bous offer a solid album of multi layered folk in Clangour . While parts of the album struggle to differentiate themsevles from the rest, standout tracks like Advent in Ives Garden and We Belong that utilize a depth of instrumentation, including myriad twinkling things, are self contained little [...]
The Happies - Cello My Pitchfork The Happies are a little-known indie act from Utah. They began as a home-recording project influenced by Grandaddy and Yo La Tengo which grew unexpectedly into a band with two releases to their name by 2007 but haven't been heard of since. Still, this track's lightly chugging string ensemble is the perfect sound for building some momentum towards Friday evening. Thanks to SammyG who recently included this track on his Bub Balulalow mix CD. Buy [...]

Thursday night, hot on the heels of a long and tiring day at work, Harlem Shakes and Passion Pit erased any speck of fatigue present in my body. Pairing these two bands is like chasing Red Bull with Rock Star. Specifically in that it leads to a great night, an adreneline haze, and uncontrollable dancing. Harlem Shakes are a young band that have been turning heads in the blogosphere recently. When I say young band, I mean young band. Passion Pit looks like a group of [...]

'Two young nuns explore Chicago - from a supermart the Art Institute and in front of churches on Sunday - people are facing the crucial question: 'Are you happy?' They meet many people - a lonely girl, a good mother, a sister, some amateurs, two hippie musicians, a lady, a sociologist, a college professor, even Stepin Fetchit, and received many responses - "Happiness is the absence of fear", "Avoid people", "Rasberries", "Joy to know Christ". Humor and sadness of these meetings honest lift the film beyond the interview format and a serious investigation into the emotional concerns of the man, [...]

I've heard a lot recently about this band Local Natives, but I hadn't gotten a chance to check 'em out until today - glad I finally did. This song sounds like a lot of music coming out these days, but with the distinction that it's better than most. It's upbeat, a bit of a return to guitar rock roots, and full of airy but unrestrained vocals. Some really great vocal work here too, pinpointed at the 0:37 mark, evocative of Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear but without the seriousness. [...]

I am stuck on soul music. And I’ve been stuck on it for a while. Usually these phases pass, but I keep discovering new recordings, and the music just generally seems to lend itself to the warm sunny joys of early summer. So I’m going to write about it today, and make a (perhaps misguided) attempt to describe why I find the genre so powerful. For me, much of soul’s power lies in its gospel roots. Early on, soul music was decried for mixing religious musical styles with the devil’s music—rhythm and blues. Ray Charles met such criticism [...]

I heard this track on my own recommended station on Last.fm which I recommend highly because if you like the music that you've heard on this blog then you'll definately like the tracks they play there. To this day, no matter how many times I am bored with my own collection of music and decide to pop on that station, I end up finding so much great music that leads me to new artists so I recommend you check it out. As I've said, this is a track I heard on that very station and it lead me [...]

Last night, Dedicated Fan X and I had the distinct pleasure of catching a one-night-only performance by the Sly Voxes, one of Boston's premiere male vocal ensembles. It was a black tie affair not to be missed, and the group certainly did not disappoint. From the outset, the Voxes were impressive, opening the concert with a beautiful fugue-ish rendition of "Sing dem Herrn" as they progressed from the back of the venue to the stage. They then proceeded to flaunt their chamber chops with a first half of slower traditional pieces. The Voxes were [...]
