How many times have you heard (or given) this answer to the question: "So... what kind of music do you like?" "Well... I like a lot. Actually, I'd say pretty much anything except country." I know I've said it in my lifetime. I don't anymore, but I know I've said it. And I know I still hear it at almost every large social gathering where people are meeting for the first time that I attend. It's usually not me asking, mind you, but isn't it fascinating that that's usually one of the first questions people ask [...]
photo by Darwin Bell The good news, it's Friday. The bad news, it's Friday the 13th - again ! To help deflect any possible bad fortune coming your way, we threw together a collection of songs and videos that we hope will be your evil eye charm for the day: Jimmy Tamborello, recently known for his contributions to The Postal Service, has been working as Dntel for thirteen (!) years, and his latest album, his first in six years, is entitled Bad Luck . Here's [...]
It's a nifty mix of stuff today. There are a couple of leaky leaks in the Hexstatic and Happy Mondays - the Mondays may or may not be the mastered final version. The Kenna is some bumpin' Neptunes produced promo action, and Shalamar give you a great '80s oldie. Hexstatic - Tokyo Traffic When Robots Go Bad Happy Mondays - Rush Rush Uncle Dysfunktional Kenna - Say Goodbye To Love Make Sure They

H ere it is. The final installment of Uncle's Primordial Soup . There are certainly more great songs from this time period, but these are the ones that I'm most fond of. Don't forget to come out to Cal's Bar tonight (if you're in Chicago) for the Chicago Blogapalooza presented by yours truly and two other excellent Chicago-based blogs called Songs:Illinois and Big Rock Candy Mountain . The show starts at 10PM and the lineup includes Frontier Ruckus , Satellite 66 , [...]

Hey all, with the schedule posted and the event growing ever nearer by the day, I wanted to let you know that you can get all your ComFest coverage right here at ThaBombShelter next weekend. I'll have my laptop with me all weekend and will be posting show reviews throughout the day from Cup O' Joe on the Cap, complete with pictures. If you're not from the central Ohio area, or are from central Ohio and have never been, let me attempt to explain the awesomeness that is ComFest (granted, I'm a bit biased, it's been [...]

According to the Nokia Theatre website , the Happy Mondays gigs at Nokia this Wednesday & Thursday have been cancelled. No reason is given, but given the spate of Visa problems for UK bands recently, I wouldn't be surprised if that didn't play a part. The shows were being held as part of the In The City Of New York music seminar, and the Wednesday gig was also to feature The Rakes and The Pigeon Detectives. The Thursday night show at Highline affiliated with In The City Of New York featuring [...]

I'm already busy, non-stop since I sat down this morning. So the priority right now is to get you some music to listen to and whistle while you work. Happy Mondays Salford, Greater Manchester Currently 4-member band (Shaun Ryder, Mark "Bez" Berry, Gary Whelan, Kav Sandhu) Rumor is that their band name is a mock of New Order's "Blue Monday" Take a listen: Happy Mondays - " Staying' Alive " (mp3 remix) Orson [...]
Kudos to Comedy Central for running Office Space almost non-stop this weekend. I know it's not that rare of an occurance, but it'd been awhile since I'd seen it (albeit in edited form), and I forgot how hard some of the lines made me laugh. It at least provided me a clumsy enough transition to this paragraph and ample opportunity to start this week off with (is it cliched yet?) a "case of the Mondays." Workwise, of course, it's not really that much of a bother - my case of the Mondays, perhaps predictably, [...]

Sometimes I wish I could have been around in the 80s just for all the cool music. I recently came upon this revelation after watching the Music and Lyrics (with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore). Cheesy plot and music, but funny. As always, I have thought up the most eloquent descriptions yet! (Not) Happy Mondays - Hallelujah This song makes me want to be in clubs and stuff. What do kids call it these days - "club hopin' "? I invite all of you to [...]
Isn't it funny that more songs in this episode were released in the seventies than eighties? Yes, three 1978 songs are featured in this suppose-ed eighties snapshot. Why you don't ask? Well why not? My standards have dropped already, so why not push them further? No I think the main reason is debut-album syndrome. The condition so many bands have where they struggle to beat the quality of their first album. So while most of the artists here would belong best to the eighties, they're best song may be found elsewhere. Now previously I would have picked a different song [...]

The Happy Mondays were one of Manchester's premier groups, drawing huge crowds for Factory Records' Haçienda. Their flowing mixture of funk, soul, and brit-pop was one of the highlights of the Madchester music scene, along with the Stone Roses' guitar-pop. 1990's Pills, Thrills, N Bellyaches remains as one of the genre's best ever albums and vaulted them from relative obscurity to druggie icons. Sadly, their reputation of being drug fiends, particularly in Shaun Ryder's case, lead to a multitude of problems, culminating in the band's break-up. Bez and Shaun later formed Black Grape in the mid-90s, and [...]
This is all about a compilation entitled Happy Daze :Volume 1, and I will simply transcribe what it says in the sleeve notes:- This album has been compiled to reflect the events/music of 1990. Fifteen tracks in all, but it could easily have been a double album – who knows, maybe next time. Without waxing lyrical, we tried to pick and mix the grooviest music. Most reached the nation's ears, some

This news follows confirmation that the band will be on a reunion tour this year, commencing at Coachella in late April. The guys haven't released an album of new tunes since 1992's 'Yes Please'. The new album will be produced by hip-hopper Sonny Levine and should see the light of day towards the end of the year. Bjork and Howie B have their hands in the mixing. MADchester rave is back! For more on what to expect, hop over to Uncut's site . MP3: Happy Mondays - Bob's Yer [...]
