I never saw Factory Records' Manchester offices, but thanks to Michael Winterbottom's excellent film 24 Hour Party People , I can imagine what they looked like. What I can't visualize is how they'll look... as a club. You see, as ClashMusic reports, the post-punk landmark is getting a makeover - and when it reopens later this month, it will be all about the nightlife. The offices that were home to the label that launched Joy Division (pictured) , Happy Mondays, New Order, A Certain Ratio and more will be transformed into "FAC2513 [...]

Filed under: News , UK The former offices of legendary Manchester record label Factory Records are being reopened as a night club. Called FAC251, the club is situated on the corner of Princess Street and Charles Street, site of Factory's headquarters from 1990 onwards when it was purchased and expensively redesigned at the height of the Madchester boom and later blamed as being responsible for the company's financial collapse. On the website of the new club - which is - a message [...]

Filed under: News , UK After years of tireless work, the campaign seeking justice over the death of singer Kirsty MacColl is to come to an end. The campaign's committee announced the move after Mexican authorities closed the case when all lines of enquiry had been exhausted. Furthermore, the campaign had achieved its aims and raised the necessary amount for MacColl's mother to meet her legal fees. Two charities in South America will now benefit from the remaining funds.
Shithouse Graveysmokers Shithouse Graveysmokers create a rather unique take on the Madchester sound, blending sunny party riffs with American flavoured psychedelia, cheap drum loops and a dotty scrambled-eggs production, making for something that sounds like an offhand jam between Beck, The Flaming Lips and the Happy Mondays. A weirdly feel-good listening experience. Shithouse Graveysmokers - Don’t Get Specific ( mp3 )

Kavin Sandu's music might be all volleys and daggers, booze and swagger, but take him out of his native England and station him in Los Angeles for a year, and he's more than a little bit wonder-struck. "It really does inspire me on a day-to-day basis," the singer-guitarist and architect of the rock band KAV says of the time he's spent here recording his forthcoming debut album "Rise of the Clowns." "I suppose I'm a sponge at the end of the day ... You find inspiration in anything you experience in life." [...]

It has been announced today that The Durutti Column , of which the creatively erratic Vini Reilly is a founding member, are to release a commemorative album to mark the death of Factory Records co-founder and manager of the Hacienda nightclub, Tony Wilson. The release, A Paean To Wilson , was originally written by Vini Reilly as a personal collection for Wilson to listen to while he was seriously ill in hospital in 2007, shortly before his death. The tape, in its present form was commissioned by the Manchester International [...]

Dance beats that sound like they were concocted in a pharmacy, breasts sprouting from nowhere, hooking for fun (and profit)-guess elder statesman of musical decadence Shaun Ryder felt that he needed to show those Last Night's Party whippersnappers how to engage in excess the right way. [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Liam Maher, vocalist for early '90s band Flowered Up , died Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the age of 41. Maher fronted the band, which earned notoriety during the baggy movement as the London equivalent to the northern "Madchester" dance-inspired rock outfits like the Happy Mondays , the Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets. Although little information about the circumstances of Maher's death are known other than he died at his home, Jeff Barrett -- who founded the band's label Heavenly -- told MusicWeek [...]
Our good friend and expert in all music British, Kitchener Joe, took in the Happy Mondays and Psychedelic Furs double bill at the Kool Haus in Toronto this week. He was kind enough to furnish us with a review. Here's his take on the show (thanks Joe!): The return of the Psychedelic Furs and the Happy Mondays to Toronto offered concert-goers either a good time or a great time, depending on

I'd like to say it's been a slow music week but that's not at all true - some ridiculous(ly good) looking releases have popped up, I just haven't got around to listening to anything. Been a bit crook, been a bit lazy etc. and still feeling a bit drained. Anyway I'll just post a few things that I've been thinking about sharing for a while. Such as this magnificent Leo Zero production on The Popular People's Front 's LOVE EP . Super funky and soulful with a few little Leo quirks. A total feel-good gospel party [...]

like my britpop urge, i've recently been listening to a fair bit of baggy, that scene where former indie no-hopers popped a few e's and suddenly discovered that "there'd always been a dance element to our music". thus bands like the farm and the soup dragons, after years of toiling in indie obscurity all of a sudden were on top of the pops. the real kings of the scene of course were happy mondays and the stone roses, closely supported by organ ginders insprial carpets and the charlatans. you know all this already of course. for [...]

In what may very well be the most touted collaboration of the British underground, former Stone Roses vocalist Ian Brown has revealed plans to work on material with legendary Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr . Holy crap! In an interview with BBC news, Brown has stated plans to work with Marr, creating music for a mutual friend's new drama series. "The idea is that Johnny writes the music and I write the words and the melodies," Brown revealed. As for the subject matter, the content will most likely mirror the plot of [...]
