Given our name, it's no secret that we gorge on electronic sound, be it discomforting or transcendent. Guttural or sublime. We're forever wary of confirmation bias but this year does seem to have seen wave upon wave of synth based music. Not just music that features a synth but music that's built around the synth, great cathedrals constructed to encapsulate the idea of making synthetic sounds that by their design are alien and other . Except, they're not anymore. Thirty years of indoctrination has made the music of the synths mean something else. A piece of retro nostalgia at one [...]

Despite last month's paltry mix and last week's confession re my lack of listening, I've somehow managed to come up with eight new-to-me tracks in the last month, crafted into a tidy mix for your listening pleasure. In truth this collection came more or less from just three sources: apologies/props to my friends at the Cargo Culte , from whom I pilfer many tracks every month (this month, Steve Moore and Harald Grosskopf); shout-out to Swan Fungus, whose top ten of the year so far clued me in to the Tape track; and a special nod to Miles at [...]
The story of Osho—master, mystic, madman… "Trying to define Osho is like trying to imprison a rainbow or catch a cloud that's floating through your room. Like sand, he slips through your fingers: like a sparkling drops of dew, his magic vanishes with the rising sun of definition. Samuel Johnson, in his Preface to Shakespeare, [...]

I know what you're thinking — why did Anthony Michael Hall agree to wear metallic paint for this album cover? A more relevant question is why I have such a soft spot for sequencers, real drums, and lead synth that traces shapes in no particular hurry. I figure why stop at one winning groove when doubling down feels doubly good. Some imagery comes to mind — the first track feels like burrowing out of the ground and seeing the sunshine for the first time in years, the second is like gliding through endless air. [...]

Shriekback is not an easy band to classify. They borrowed heavily from funk but had a very different agenda; their music (in their later years) was more suited for contemplation than for parties. They combined synthesizers and drum machines with throbbing bass lines and unorthodox vocals to evoke a blurred primordial world. The first Shriekback release was the six-song EP Tench, which appeared on the iconic English label 'Y Records' in 1982. It was followed in 1983 by the LP Care, also on 'Y', which featured the quasi-hit "Lined Up," the song that put Shriekback on the map for [...]
One of the greets unsung talents at the center of the Krautrock movement, Harald never really took received the acclaim of a Schuzle or Gottsching. But he was vital to the recording of many albums. In the early '70s he, along with members of The Cosmic Jokers, recorded music for the incredible Tarot album credited [...]
At Birds. Where I drink quite often these days. I sit down and order a drink. Thesy remarks, "Dude, you look really good. You're glowing!" Uh…really? Are you sure I'm not just greasy? I guess people have noticed a change. We have this regular customer at the store who likes to say the dirtiest, most-sexually [...]

photos by Erez Avissar ""IF YOU'RE FROM NEW YORK, you'll know this one." As the image of an eye patch-sporting Kurt Russell flashed across twin screens behind the stage at West Village destination Le Poisson Rouge, the speaker struck up a portentous synth line and the audience burst into nostalgic applause; ...the tense theme from 1981 cult actioner Escape from New York is one of his own compositions. RVNG INTL. , 2011 // LP / BUY Harald Grosskopf 's seminal debut album Synthesist , long out of print since its original release on Sky Records in 1980, has been finally reissued by the good folks at Rvng Intl . And what a reissue it is! Grosskopf is the first drummer and percussionist in the world of electronic music who performed with sequencers - first with Manuel Göttsching's legendary band Ashra (Ash Ra Tempel) and later with the Cosmic Jokers, [...]

It's time to listen to a bunch of the tracks I have not had a chance to post. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. Blondes take the synth-wave legend Harold Grosskopf's title track - taken from the 1980 LP 'Synthesist' - on a dark, thudding techno trip, that progresses with the original's masterful analog synth work as a starting point, before slowly unvareling into a moody, echoing techno piece. 'Synthesist' is being re-released on February 15 on RVNG Intl, fitted with a second disc full of remixes from contemporary artists: Harald Grosskopf - Synthesist (Blondes Remix) {via Pitchfork } Next up the [...]
Synthesist (Blondes Remix)

RVNG Intl are preparing to reissue the seminal 1980 LP from Harald Grosskopf entitled 'Synthesist' . He'd previously been a percussionist extraordinaire for the likes of Ash Ra Temple and Klaus Schulze. In the summer of 1979 he headed to the West German countryside armed with a Minimoog and a Revox reel to reel and spent two months grappling with his fickle technology until an understanding was reached. From these sessions came 'Synthesist'. RVNG have also commissioned a remix package which features the likes of Arp, CFCF, JD Twitch and many more getting their mits on [...]

Originally released some what thirty years ago was Harald Grosskopf 's album ' Synthesist '. An artist considered as a synth-wave pioneer, this album was originally recorded in a two month period in the summer of 1979. Harald armed himself with a MiniMoog and Revox reel to reel and isolated himself in the West German country side. It is now on the verge of being re-issued in the coming week by Rvng Intl , newly mastered and packaged. It includes, along with the original album, a record of remixes from artists who's work has been inspired [...]

I heard Harald Grosskopf 's "Synthesist" while catching up on the always-amazing 20jazzfunkgreats . I was instantaneously awestruck by its elegant and simple beauty, each oscillation of sound unfurling itself and stretching ever upwards towards the heavens. When I came to learn that "Synthesist" is the title track to Grosskopf's 1980 album, I was saddened I hadn't been listening all along. Thankfully, RVNG Intl. is putting the finishing touches on what promises to be a beatifully arranged reissue, due February 15. A bonus disc features reinterpretations from personal favorites Blondes, CFCF and [...]

Picture the collection of delicate vibrations through which sound is transported across air as a nascent civilisation of golden-skinned homunculi toiling in barren lands, developing in a super-compressed evolutionary process a theory of the mind and language. Imagine this tiny civilisation advancing in parallel tracks, material progress manifest in trade, crafts, technology and floating cities of delightful architecture, a refined theory of aesthetics informing powerful epics and feats of poetic wonder, and a mystical drive which keeps them expanding past their natural medium, into the infinity and beyond. If the stars are our destination, then we [...]
