ARMS? (No not the limbs), I would relate ARMS to a more straight forward version of Local Natives (they call it lo-fi pop, I guess I can see that as well). ARMS began as the solo project of former Harlem Shakes front man Todd Goldstein, countless bedroom sessions finally boiled over post Harlem Shakes breakup and now experimentation has led to a full band and Summer Skills . Or, as they they worded it: "ARMS is what happens when the back burner bursts into flame." These two great singles coupled with some awesome Daytrotter [...]
I'm pretty sure I've posted this song before, but when it comes to New Years Eve songs, I don't think there is a better one than this. And since it is New Years Eve tonight —and possibly the last one, if the Mayan's were onto something more than just deciding they had updated their calendar far enough ahead to take a break from updating it for awhile— I figured, why not post it again? Perhaps it is the repeating of "this will be a better year" that makes it such a great New Years jam. I always like [...]

Schon [...]
Today's song of the day is a tribute to the ephemeral state of good indie music. Today I simultaneously discovered Harlem Shakes and mourned their passing…apparently back in 2009. This awesome alt rock band formed in 2006, released its first, very well received, album, Technicolor Health (a great name for an album), in 2009 and then disbanded that same year. There's nothing worse than discovering a great new artist, googling them and then finding the following statement on Wikipedia, "(insert band name here) WAS an American indie rock band…" This knowledge unfortunately also comes on the heels of my discovering [...]
When guitarist Todd Goldstein first moved to Brooklyn in 2004, he started ARMS to keep himself musically busy. After Goldstein joined the Harlem Shakes in 2006, ARMS fell to the wayside as a side project, releasing just one album in 2008 and a few singles/EPs mixed in. While Harlem Shakes disbanded back in September 2009 , Goldstein has only just now brought ARMS back to the forefront for the project's sophomore LP, Summer Skills . Though they may be another indie rock act in the sea of BK, Goldstein and company know how to set a [...]

Tweet With ARMS new album " Summer Skills " FINALLY coming out next Tuesday here is " Glass Harmonica ," a perfect example of why you should be as stoked as I am. It has been over two years since I first heard " Tiger Tamer ," which was the start of a love that would systematically grow and grow as I got deeper into " Kid Aflame ." From the very first listen ARMS impressed [...]
Just a few days before Tokyo Police Club hop on a plane to the City of Angels to perform at the L.A. 101 Festival, guitarist Josh Hook chats with us.
Welcome to another installment of Monday Threesome , your weekly hit of free music! It's a family affair for this selection, with each group tied to Brooklyn's Harlem Shakes . Though the band is no longer together, much of their music is still available for free, and former members have all continued with stellar projects of their own. Todd Goldstein, the guitarist from Harlem Shakes , recorded under this moniker for years as a solo project, but recently added additional members to augment [...]

ARMS is the former side-project, now main gig of Harlem Shakes guitarist, Todd Goldstein and the band (which also includes previously spotlighted Matty Fasano) is preparing to release their debut full-length in November. Our first taste of the new album is a track called "Fleeced", which as You Ain't No Picasso points out has a very Local Natives feel with it's layered vocals, jagged guitar riffs and frenzied drumming. The track promises great things for new album Summer Skill s, which just moved way up my list of anticipated albums for the rest of [...]
When we talked about the new album from ARMS a month back, it didn't seem like the band had fully picked up steam just yet. But, now that the release of Summer Skills is nearing, more people are taking notice, and deservedly so. I love the off the hilt percussion usage in this new track, not to mention the sweeping melody that floats over it all. No need to hype this song, or album, up anymore, as it clearly is speaking for itself. What we might have lost [...]
Listen to Tokyo Police Club cover 'All My Friends,' 'Kim & Jessie,' 'Party in the USA,' 'Long Distance Call,' and 'Strictly Game' in their new covers series.
In case you missed out on the now defunct Harlem Shakes , I'm here to let you know you missed something quite special. For now, we can all make due with ARMS , the project of Todd Goldstein, formerly of HS. He's done some work on his own, but he's now recruited a few friends to help flesh out the sound of ARMS. His new moniker in tow, he'll be releasing Summer Skills on November 8. Some of the tracks, like the one below, you can find on a [...]
You can't go wrong a band whose name comes from a pretty sweet dance move.

Hey! Thought we forgot about this, eh? Nah... Next time I leave the country for a month, I will also leave access to the hard drive where all my files are located. So we're still aiming to re-post all of the Blogophilia volumes by summer's end. Today we have volumes 5 & 6, which feature promotional MP3s available during May and June of 2009. As always, these are gapless mixes with cover art. These are only up for a limited time, so get them now! - [...]

The great part of being involved in little music communities outside the blogosphere is that you always discover fun little gems that you mightn't have found otherwise. That's where I discovered this fun little track from Vancouver group, Oh No! Yoko . They just released a nice little album full of similarly fun tunes titled Pau Pau , so if you dig what's going on below, it's worth taking a hard look at. For me, I kind of get the feeling of Passion Pit or Harlem Shakes [...]

While it's fun to hate on Pitchfork , the truth is that most of the time they get it right. There is that rare occasion though, when they'll put up a review that I find to be way off the mark. The most recent example being the review one of my favorite albums of the year, Patrick Wolf's Lupercailia . The reviewer's argument seems to be solely focused on an admittedly pompous quote from Wolf himself and the overly-kitschy lyrics. There's even an admission that "if you strip away the unctuous lyrical [...]
There is nothing i enjoy more than meeting up with friends at dusk and heading out on a late night drive through the country. Conversations are better, time feels like it doesn't exist, the world feels like it's full of possibilities, and the stress of day to day monotony are forgotten completely. It's the only place i truly feel free, where i finally believe that anything can happen, where my friends and I strip away all pretensions and feel truly alive. Before heading out there are a few necessities that must never be overlooked; Redbull (or your choice [...]
This was a great band out of New York who managed to put 1.5 albums before breaking up in 2009. This tune is off their solid LP "Technicolor Health".

Although it was a major bummer when Harlem Shakes prematurely split a couple years ago, one good thing to come out of the break-up is Thunder & Lightning , a NYC-based indie pop band which is led, just about single-handedly, by their former drummer, Brent Katz. Who knew that the guy's talent behind the drum set would also translate to an incredible flair for pop songwriting and melody? I've been listening to his debut album, Kangaroo Court , and whether or not you were a Harlem Shakes fan, there is a lot to love here. [...]
