There is nothing i enjoy more than meeting up with friends at dusk and heading out on a late night drive through the country. Conversations are better, time feels like it doesn't exist, the world feels like it's full of possibilities, and the stress of day to day monotony are forgotten completely. It's the only place i truly feel free, where i finally believe that anything can happen, where my friends and I strip away all pretensions and feel truly alive. Before heading out there are a few necessities that must never be overlooked; Redbull (or your choice [...]
This was a great band out of New York who managed to put 1.5 albums before breaking up in 2009. This tune is off their solid LP "Technicolor Health".

Although it was a major bummer when Harlem Shakes prematurely split a couple years ago, one good thing to come out of the break-up is Thunder & Lightning , a NYC-based indie pop band which is led, just about single-handedly, by their former drummer, Brent Katz. Who knew that the guy's talent behind the drum set would also translate to an incredible flair for pop songwriting and melody? I've been listening to his debut album, Kangaroo Court , and whether or not you were a Harlem Shakes fan, there is a lot to love here. [...]
Check out the video premiere of Swizz Beatz "Everyday (Coolin')" featuring Eve. The glossy black and white clip features Lil Swizz and Diddy 2.0 busting some soon-to-be old school dance moves i.e. Harlem Shake. View the stylish video below.

Thunder & Lightning — Kangaroo Court I have infinite love for New York's sadly defunct Harlem Shakes , so when I got word from former drummer Brent Katz about his new project Thunder & Lightning, I was understandably pumped. The band (which features Shakes bandmates as well as members of Beirut ) self-released their Kangaroo Court full-length back in November, and I'm kicking myself for not discovering it until now. While Shakes guitarist Todd Goldstein went [...]

Springtime's here. I think. Growing up in Michigan, I try not to get too excited when the weather starts getting warmer. And who knows, maybe I'll begrudge the heat once New York turns into a oven of humidity like last year. In honor of my recently-dusted air-conditioner, a decent start to the Detroit Tiger's baseball season and the return of skirt weather, I put together this mix... After the release of their most recent album Departing this year, Ben takes a look back at their memorable debut, Hometowns. After lukewarm acclaim for Departing, he looks at Hometowns for clues about where the Advantage could and should be going. At the very least, it is certainly an album worth revisiting.
The Rural Alberta Advantage probably appreciate movies like The Deer Hunter, the 1978 classic that depicted the inhabitants of a small, factory-dependent town shortly after the Vietnam War. These portrayals of ex-soldiers/steel workers with deep emotional wounds made for a great film with a top-notch cast that contributed to some of the finest character development [...]

Click image to download full album Song: Voxtrot - The Start of Something "Voxtrot - The Start of Something" What's so good? "Part of doing something with love is being able to say 'goodbye' at the right time. Thank you for everything. On to the next one..." It's difficult to find fault in Ramesh Srivastava's bittersweet farewell - not only saying goodbye to the success of the band he created in the early 20002s, but also to the [...]

"Someday soon you'll be on fire/Ask me for a glass of water/I'll say noooooo/Let that shit burn/And you'll say/Please please please put me out/I promise not to do again/Whatever I did to you . . ." This is the opening line on the opening song ("Someday Soon") of Harlem 's Matador debut, "Hippies." Does the title raise expectations of love and flowers, jangly peace songs about coming together? Well, these opening lines should force you to jettison any such prediction. The music is garage rock. Think Nobunny, Iggy Pop, The Strokes, White Stripes . . . Power [...]

Check out In Grenada , a band born from the ashes of Philadelphia ukuele indie band Movable Type. They're currently about to self-release their debut (Break) on Sept 28th; 10 songs of cowboy-harmonicas, shimmering guitars and thundering toms inspired by the pain of country, the joy of pop and the attitude of rock n' roll. I was really drawn to the song below, for fans of Harlem Shakes , Two Hours Traffic , Wolf Parade . Distance And Temptation

Harlem Hippies (2010, Matador) RIYL = Girls, The Strokes, Hanoi Janes I just realized that I haven't written up Hippies . Well, let me go ahead and present this formal recommendation. Hippies is bread and butter. The ingredients aren't new, but it is super delicious and, similar to actual occassions I've had with bread and butter, Harlem's version just so happens to be that one time when this simplified recipe seems to hit the spot just that much harder. The band's sound is strongly reminiscent of Girls' breakthrough, Album, [...]

The Delta Spirit was a band that I never seem to seek out in my music library, but I was always pleasantly surprised when they find their way through my speakers. Like a more alt-country Harlem Shakes or a less synth-reliant Helio Sequence, the San Diego based quartet has carved out a healthy cult following through some notably energetic live shows, one of which won over former ATG guest writer Claire a few years back. The band stepped their game up with their 2010 release, History From Below , which has generally been quite well received in [...]

Harlem Shakes Technicolor Health (2009, Gigantic) RIYL = The Shins, The Evangelicals, A bright, hook infused pop band with well written lyrics and the sweet, pure sound of hope. Dash it all, they've imploded and are no longer. But this remains: Technicolor Health , a perfect indie rock/pop album on par with the "life changing" stylings of a band like The Shins. My FG compatriots seem to think that Technicolor Health was killed by overly active blog hype, but I never noticed any of that. Maybe that's [...]
Max Fishkin provides a second look at Tokyo Police Club's new album, Champ, to follow up our earlier interview of their keyboardist, Graham Wright. The album lives up to the high expectations Wright set forth in the interview (he claimed it was their "best record yet"), and the standouts make it easy to see why.

Sorry about my lack of posts this week. It's been really heavy exam season so I haven't had any time, and I still don't really. I've barely downloaded at all this week. However, I have had an idea. It goes as follows. I will select my five favorite songs, as will all the other FPK contributors, and then you can comment yours on the bottom. However, it isn't as easy as simply picking five. I want an explanation as to why you've chosen, and it can be as corny as mine are. This wasn't as simple [...]
