Ah, SXSW...the music madness continues. Who to see? What to do? SVB wants you to make well informed musical decisions next week in Austin. As part of our Best Bets continuing series of who to see in Austin, go forth and rock. The Ettes schedule at SXSW No Home - The Ettes Fanfarlo schedule at SXSW [...]
For the first time ever I'm going to see first hand if the stars are big and bright in Texas! While down there I'll be checking out some up-and-coming bands to see who's worth writing about and listening to in the near future. Now a lot of the acts playing SXSW this year are established acts that I've been raving about for years, so it wouldn't be fair to point out a list of bands like The Decemberists and M. Ward instead I'm pointing out bands I've heard but never seen before. Who are you guys looking forward to seeing? [...]
Last, and coincidentally first, time I posted on Harlem, Chris was thrilled I'd finally been hipped to one of his favorite Austin bands. Well if I took a month or two to catch on, I'm making a little progress because I'm only about half a day behind on this MP3. MP3: Harlem - Come Back [...]
Goes Cube - "Grinding the Knife Blade" ; Well it seems Goes Cube are finally over naming their songs after numbers, which is a definitely a good thing, and this rocking ass track certainly sets the bar fairly high for all the actually titled songs to come. Grade : B Art Brut - "Just Desserts" ; This may just be the B-side to their lead single, but Art Brut and Eddie Argos certainly show their wit has [...]

- File Under "They're Nature Kids, Oh They Don't Have No Function": Wayne Coyne (of major label outfit The Flaming Lips ) has engaged in trash talk about Arcade Fire with Rolling Stone. Read a big excerpt at Stereogum ... here . Choice quote: "they're pricks, so fuck 'em." Read Win's response... here (stupid flash, no permalink... go to Win >>> Win's Journal >>> I still like clouds taste metallic). Choice quote: "I hope I was less of a 'prick' then telling Rollingstone that a bunch of people I don't know at all [...]

ENTER THE NEW: Harlem words: Jamie Milton top photo: moominsean " They are the colour of a rainbow " What's the subject here? Have a good, long guess... Nope, it's 'Psychedelic Tits'. There's some of the 60's in all of us still, even me, someone who was born thirty years after the decade ended. Harlem , who you shouldn't whatsoever confuse with Salem are another American band turning heads with their nostalgia-led, lo-fi melodies. [...]
Gorilla vs. Bear has an awesome cover of Devo's "Come Back Jonee" from Harlem . The band is apparently doing a covers of the month club thing so you may see a few more of these in the next couple of days. Come Back Jonee (Devo Cover) - Harlem - MP3 Swing by Aquarium Drunkard for the RAM on L.A. Los Angeles Music Sampler, a meshing of Los Angeles (some of) finest covering Paul McCartney's 1971 album RAM . Listeners are encouraged to make donations to [...]

Austin 's Harlem takes on Devo 's " Come Back Jonee " for the 4th installment of their covers of the month club . According to the band: "people are probably going to think that we are trying to capitalize on the fact that devo is coming here for sxsw but before we even knew they were playing we had decided to a cover of come back jonee. i guess we would be pretty stoked if devo heard it but then again they might tell us it sucks or [...]

OK. So maybe it's more like central Texas teardrops, but that's not a song. But yeah, your regular editors (Vince, Andrew, Matt) are not going to be at SXSW. We're over it, even if you may not be. We'll be in New York paying the bills at our day jobs. BUT. Contributing writer Lauren Mooney will be there writing for Pop Rock Candy Mountain , and we are dispatching rogue writer and musician Tim Emmerick to the scene to see what Texas beer tastes like. Our guess is: pretty fuckin' delicious. Yes, there are hundreds of bands [...]

Nothing like some good ol' garage rock every now and then. Everyone says these guys sound like The Black Lips , they do and don't, either way get over it, their good. South of France is among the noteworthy tracks from their Free Drugs LP , I'll be posting a few more. I can't really make out most of the lyrics but its something about partying with topless girls on the beach, taking drugs and drunken cabs with strangers, sold me. Great track. [...]

Song Harlem ~ " South of France " myspace views: 18,964 mp3 download (via gvsb ) So let's get this straight... The group's name is Harlem, but they are from Austin and their song is Called "South of France". Anyone else feeling directionally challenged all of a sudden? I heard about these guys on gvsb , and I like the old school garage rock feel. Video [...]

Our friends over at Gorilla vs Bear have just announced the lineup details for their third annual Gorilla vs Booze SXSW Day Party . This was the party that started off our week last year , and while it was incredibly hot, we still managed to have a good time. This year's party takes place on Thursday, March 19th at the Peacock once again. We'll definitely remember to wear shorts this time out cause we're staying for the long haul. The lineup is incredibly good (all killer, no filler) and it's FREE [...]

There was a short period of time where it looked as though one of my favorite garage rock bands might end up in a Indian gulag , which would have been pretty shitty for all parties involved (but mostly for the band, I admit). During this time, I at least took comfort in knowing that there is a band coming up the pike who would have taken a stab at the out of control, garage rock crown that the Black Lips have in recent years taken as their own. Last year Harlem, an Austin based group, released their frantically [...]

drexciya For the latest installment of Harlem 's increasingly weird and awesome Covers of the Month Club , the dudes offer up their version of " Sea Snake ," from Detroit techno legends Drexciya . According to the band: " we are late on everything. our van broke down. all the dishes are dirty. curtis is drunk. but we finally got to finish our cover of the month! its a cover of sea snake by drexciya . drexciya is this awesome techno band that wrote songs about an underwater sea community populated [...]
The garage rock schtick has been done to death, but there's always room for when it's done well. Harlem is your band. Mixing in a bit of frantic, Pixies-style unpredictability with its retro-kitsch harmonies, Austin's Harlem knows how to make a glorious lo-fi racket. I recommend listening to "The South of France" on the band's MySpace page, which has been getting crazy play on Sirius XMU lately, or watching the video for "Witch Greens." As GvsB pointed out back in August, Harlem's description of itself is hard to top: "When kids are [...]

One of our favorite new Austin bands, Built by Snow , will be playing as part of the 101x Homegrown Live series at the Creekside Lounge this Wednesday evening. The band will be joined by other ATH favorites Hollywood Gossip & Harlem . Tickets will be sold at the door for a mere $5 with things kicking off around 9/10pm. If you haven't seen this band yet, make it a point to do so. Download: Harlem - Beautiful & Very Smart [MP3]

I'll be the first to admit, that I haven't always been completely on board with this band Tapes N Tapes . I've seen the band a couple of times live, without any investment in the recorded material, and it just hasn't done much for me. Since then, the some of the recorded material has caught my attention, and in the spirit of being more "open" minded with music these days, I think it time to give the band a shot once again. They are playing one of the best rooms in town, the Parish, so there's no excuse for [...]

As a part of their Next Big Thing series , 101x is bringing you a solid show this Thursday evening with Tapes 'n Tapes , Wildlight & Harlem at The Parish . Tickets are still available for only $16 . Doors are set to open at 8pm. Download: Tapes 'n Tapes - Hang Them All [MP3]
