Today's alliterative installment of Weekend YouTube will take a look at a few videos from artists I've reviewed recently on the site. The videos are for songs I didn't share the first time around to give you a deeper feel for some of these albums. I featured Nashville's Caitlin Rose last month . This is the title track from her new CD Own Side Now . Israel Nash Gripka's new release Barn Doors & Concrete Floors was featured yesterday . [...]

Seems like an age ago when I put up a short piece on Haroula Rose's début EP Someday mentioning talk of a full length release, well this it These Open Roads adorned by her angelic voice and melodic songwriting skills, it features a dozen tracks with contributions from a strong supporting cast including DBT's John Neff on pedal steel and the vocal talents of Orenda Fink (Azure Ray). Haroula Rose - Brand New Start [...]

Every Wednesday, I feature a brief review of at least one album that has been submitted to me through the ReviewShine website. I have cleverly titled this recurring segment "ReviewShine Wednesday." Ari and Mia are actually Ariel and Mia Friedman, sisters from the Boston area who specialize in their own special brand of folk music that draws from bluegrass, jazz, and everything in between. Ariel honed her skills on the cello at Northwestern University, while Mia's less formal training on the fiddle included stints studying [...]

The dimly-lit Hotel Café was comfortably full to watch singer-songwriter Haroula Rose play some songs off of her newly-released debut album, These Open Roads. I arrived a tad late, thanks in full to the glorious L.A. traffic, but was still able to see the majority of her set—and walked away impressed. Playing in support of Ms. Rose's record-release were talented singers in their own rights, Sara Lov, Patrick Park and Mariana Bell. From my standpoint this was a night of very solid music. Relationship inspired songs like "The Leaving Song" and "Another Breakup Ballad" were the [...]

The remaining dates include a little grab bag of sounds from chill to crazy: February 1 with Sean Rowe, Sara Lov, Patrick Park, Mariana Bell February 8 with The Sweet Hurt, Ethan Gold, Pedestrian February 15 with Kim Churchill, Mountain Man, Whispering Pines, Jeffertiti's Nile
You don't have to be sagging under the weight of the digital age to embrace the notion behind "Simple Time," a new song from Haroula Rose . "Simple time, simple time / Come find me again," the L.A.-via-Chicago songstress pleads in the song off her new album "These Open Roads." Her finger-picked guitar gets a deft production touch on the album thanks to Athens, Ga.-based Andy Lemaster, who's not only worked with the likes of R.E.M., Bright Eyes and Azure Ray but helmed L.A. quartet Mezzanine Owls' 2006 album "Slingshot Echoes." Rose's album features contributions from Drive By Truckers' [...]
The gently wistful These Open Roads , arriving January 18, is the self-released debut of Chicago-born, L.A.-based singer/songwriter Haroula Rose . Produced with graceful understatement in Athens, GA by Andy Lemaster (Bright Eyes, Maria Taylor), These Open Roads is and evocative work of hushed, simple pleasures, the perfect accompaniment to pre-dawn, contemplative solitude. Rose's voice, a near-whisper of plaintive resignation and sensuality, has the peculiar effect of drawing you closer even though the invitation is so subtle that it's almost too easy to miss. And that would be a shame. [...]
Some artists just have a knack for creating intimacy on their records. That's certainly the case with These Open Roads, the debut full length album from Chicago-native Haroula Rose (out January 18th). The singer-songwriter's songs are well-suited for setting the mood in television and movies. Her work has already appeared on the hit How I Met Your Mother, and there are no doubt more to come.
Singer-songwriter Haroula Rose will release her full-length debut, These Open Roads , in January. Until then, she's sharing a free, legal mp3 from the album. "Brand New Start" is a soft, pretty ballad about "loneliness and strength." Haroula Rose , a world traveler originally from Chicago, demonstrates in The Leaving Song that vocal twang in country songs is optional, even desirable. Infused with warmth and longing, the song pulls at the heart without a speck of sentimentality. Haroula Rose - The Leaving Song (mp3) Haroula Rose From the Someday EP. Haroula Rose is recording her debut full-length, in Athens, Georgia, this fall.

I've recently been listening to local singer/songwriter Haroula Rose's debut solo EP, Someday . Her beautiful vocals on "Lay Me Down" reminds me a little bit of Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch - but her sound is more indie than country. After several successful gigs at SXSW, Rose will begin work on a full-length LP that will be released later this year. You can catch Haroula in New York and Los Angeles in late May and June. Upcoming Shows: [...]
