PAPA's hometown blowout on Thursday night at the Troubadour came off as a little ... well, loose — especially if you'd seen them this spring at South by Southwest , where they hit every note as if they were playing for lunch money. The perils of performing to a sold-out crowd of friends and family? Perhaps. But make no mistake, PAPA sounded like the real deal Thursday, soulful and sturdy, romantically yearning yet frantically self-reliant. After kicking off the show with the galloping single "Put Me to Work," the quartet mostly gave a preview of songs [...]

Photos by Charlie Homo I've had the distinct pleasure of catching Social Studies two years in a row at Noise Pop : I saw them open for Wye Oak last year , and I caught them again Wednesday night with Ramona Falls . While this review isn't quite a "What a difference a year makes!" piece, because the band was excellent on both nights, the evolution of the band has been pretty exciting to watch. But before [...]

On February 26, Noise Pop returns for its 21 st year to bring us independent music, film, and art. There'll be some incredible emerging—and not so emerging—musicians playing this year, but there's only room for one preview per blog entry. Here's the first: Ramona Falls , Social Studies , Mahgeetah , and LA's Harriet rock the festival on February 27 at Brick & Mortar . The lineup is a smart gradient from Mahgeetah and Harriet's rootsy, Wilco-esqe airs, through Social Studies' pared-down dark pop, to Ramona Falls' heavily-layered [...]

Those of you lucky enough to snag tickets for the Walk the Moon show tomorrow at the 9:30 Club should make sure to get their in time for Pacific Air's set. It's well worth it. To get you excited for the show, [...]
T he art of the cover song is one all musicians have practiced at some point in their lives, some just stick with us more than others. 2012 was filled with fantastic covers, but after a very *ahem* scientific study, the ones below were last year's stand outs. In our minds and hearts anyway... 1. Heart of Mine (Bob Dylan) Blake Mills, Danielle Haim and Taylor Goldsmith | Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Click here to view the embedded [...]

Harriet , a young band from Los Angeles that I'm excited about, is soon going to begin working on their debut full-length album. They need some help before they can do so. Which is why they launched a kickstarter campaign . They are almost at their goal, but they can use some additional funds in order to make the best album that they can. If the fund helps them make songs as solid as "No Way Out" , it is well worth every penny. Read about the kickstarter here , and download "No [...]

Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi “I don’t think I’ve ever been to Echo Park” mused AC Newman of The New Pornographers fame as he began his set at the Echoplex on Tuesday night, backed by a solid five-piece band. Newman brought his latest solo effort, Shut Down the Streets , to shimmery, harmonious life with layers of woodwinds, keyboards, and melodica. The evening was almost entirely focused on Newman’s trademark pop soundscapes with only brief moments of stage banter, the highlight being an “argument” if one of the songs played could be considered [...]

Between his solo tours and his dates with The New Pornographers , it was hard to believe A.C. Newman (or Carl to his friends) when he noted early in his Tuesday night set that he thought this was his first time in Echo Park. But, if he had indeed managed to avoid playing until yesterday in the area's primary venues, the Echoplex and Echo, it was for the better. These two havens for up-and-coming indie, dance, and hardcore artists are generally suited for loud bills, where start times are often past midnight, the majority of the young crowd smoke [...]

Marine Electric – “Murder Mile” (Brooklyn-based band released their highly-anticipated debut album, Restrained Joy this week through Insrgnt/Unbuckled. The emotionally-strained dueling vocals that are reminiscent of Hot Water Music combined with an energetic blend of nostalgia-laced emo punk and melodic and anthemic indie rock is sure to incite unrestrained joy in their listeners.) http://www.facebook.com/marine electric [...]

Fronted by Alex Casnoff, former keyboard player for Dawes and PAPA , Harriet released their debut EP Tell The Right Story for free download earlier this year. The five song offering straddles the line between classic Americana songs and the sonic experimentation of electronic music and earned the band praise from many sources including us. The band is currently supporting AC Newman on a run of west coast dates and have made a new track No Way Out available for free download. It is inspired by Casnoff's [...]
Harriet - No Way Out A lex Casnoff's, Harriet recently released their new single "No Way Out," a harrowing real story about Casnoff's experimentation with entirely too much marijuana. It sounds like a campy idea, but the song is far darker than one would suspect based on the subject matter. It's full of deep, dark piano riffs and Casnoff's vocals that create a sense of darkness and regret. Read the entire story: “Two years ago on the holiday known as 4-20 I overdosed on weed. My [...]

There are intimate venues in LA and then there is Pappy & Harriet's out in Pioneertown. Inside the western-style restaurant/bar out in the middle of Nowhere U.S.A., Cold Cave (dressed in all black, of course) stood out amongst the locals and high school prom zombies. Wesley Eisold came out sans glasses in complete darkness on the tiny stage area and stared at the crowd as he belted out a short, but stellar set. Drummer London May almost sent food flying from a table of a family sitting nearby. Classic sitcom material. Bassist Hunter Burgan had little room to move [...]

Los Angeles band and QM friends Harriet have been recording a new album and releasing cover videos while they’re doing it. They put up the first session on YouTube the other day, and it’s a split of John Hiatt’s 1988 “Have A Little Faith in Me” and Frank Ocean’s recent “Lost.” In the days before the researching wonders of the Internet, I still remember sitting in the pews during elementary school mass practice wondering what secular song was playing (“Wait a minute, this isn’t ‘Emmanuel’….) during the Eucharistic procession that I at that [...]
