Filed under: News , Exclusive , RPM , Northern Exposure Vanessa Heins Singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman may be known for his quirky take on pop songcraft, but his keen production work with a wide variety of similarly-inclined artists shouldn't be overlooked -- he's helped draw out the dramatic flair in musicians from Sarah Slean to Hey Rosetta . So hearing that Workman helped helm the new sophomore album by [...]
Hawksley Workman: [ This Will Be the Year ]

October means we're happily knee-deep in baseball, surrounded by seasonal pumpkin ales, and, regrettably, wrist-deep in the slimy insides of jack-o-lanterns. Music has been my quiet oasis. I figure it's high time I stop futzing over my autumn mix and share it already. The fall mix is one of my favorites to make. In addition to being generally hyperaware of everything around me in life, especially subtexts and undercurrents, I notice an acute sharpening of my senses every time the seasons change. It's why I make you guys these seasonal mixes: as everything in the natural world [...]

The Ottawa Folk Festival 2011 kicked off with a new location and alot of new lineup. At first I decided not to go for Thursday's event but I did go just to see how it was like with the new location. It's bigger and more spacious. I only took photos from Hawksley Workman 's set at the main stage. The audience was loving his set and surprised to see the turnout for this. Here are the photos from the set. [...]

by teepoo You've probably heard Hawksley Workman's music but were probably unaware it was his music. Right now his track Not Your Parent's Music is featured in that Virgin Mobile commercial where those teens sneak behind a red curtain or something to get backstage into a concert. He has a well defined personal sound of alternative rock. Robot Heart is the lead single off his latest album Milk . In the track you see how effortless Hawksley is at writing a songs that [...]

The Best Friends With Wolves Club - Don't Be Crushed (Hawksley Workman cover) Hawkley Workman can be hit and miss. If you are of the type who finds him to be 'miss' you have probably heard his latest album and not For Him And The Girls ( which the original version of this song is from ). And maybe he will still be a miss for you. But before you make up your mind on the issue, you really [...]

Above: the disaster I found on my condo terrace the morning of June 18. First three photos by Jason Verwey , last two photos by Steffan Paulus . I'm a few weeks (months?) late and several hundred dollars short on my reviews lately. But in my defense, in the words of the late Kurt Vonnegut, the "the excrement has hit the air-conditioning big time, big time." Here is what I have had to put up with lately: G20 lockdown and ensuing chaos in my 'hood, trying to navigate the [...]
A lot of jokes involve Canada (and we've perpetuated a lot of those stereotypes here at CoS). But if there's one thing our neighbors to the north do well, it's honor their best and brightest musicians with the Polaris Prize . And that they'll do come September 20th in Toronto. As of now, however, 40 acts and their must-hear albums have been announced, but that list will get leaner by next month. According to the Montreal Gazette , the 2010 award honors albums released from June 1st, 2009 to May [...]

MySpace When Hawksley Workman's name last graced these pages , it was in the context of announcing a special intimate in-store at Criminal Records. This time, it's with regards to a gig a little more appropriately-sized to his stature and fanbase - his April 24 show at Massey Hall. The hometown gig at the grand old lady of Shuter Street will mark the end of cross-Canada tour that has stretched over almost two months in support of his two new records, Meat [...]

If you have an unattainable Crush, Just Quit before Your Heart Aches. Hawksley Workman: Don't Be Crushed vy dick-on

1. Hawksley Workman If you watch "How You Met Your Mother" at all, I don't even need to start up with all the Canadian jokes. But all jokes aside, I did not know how much I would like the music of a man whose first name is "Hawksley." And surprisingly, the answer is a lot. I received this song in my gmail a couple days ago and I am really liking it a lot. I love the yodeling intro, the fidgety noises, the loopy lyrics. It all came together as a great [...]

Hawksley Workman: Oh You Delicate Heart
We're digging back into the vault today, to find another superlative inducing track from the perpetually evolving Hawksley Workman; evolving may not be the best way to describe Hawksley Workman, as it implies some sort of traceable path; I think "manically reconstructing" is a better way to describe the way that man seamlessly steps from [...]
Soooooo....... I am currently without computer due to the fact that it died the other day and killed many many important things along the way. (Not least of which was my ENTIRE digital music library (120+gb's ..... AND ITS BACKUPS!!!!). I knew that I should have seen it coming but hey, procrastination and all of that. But anyway, I've tossed a toonie in the direction of my local internet cafe guy so that I could quickly give you this brief explanation for my recent lack of online persona over the last week, as well as the one that [...]

Frank Yang Had you the opportunity to go back in time and tell the 23-year old me that, in just over a decade, I'd be so fortunate as to see two of my all-time guitar heroes - Johnny Marr and J Mascis - live and awesome in a one-week span, I'd have told you to shut the fuck up. And then asked why, if you had the power to go back in time, you'd offer me that bit of information instead of, oh, stock tips or sports scores. But yeah, seeing [...]
