Photos: Hard Rock Hell Prog & AOR – 6 + 7 April 2013

Photos: Hard Rock Hell Prog & AOR – 6 + 7 April 2013 We can't get enough of festivals here in the UK. Summer festivals, Winter festivals, and - right now at least - Spring festivals. Earlier this month, Hard Rock Hell hosted the very first Hard Rock Hell AOR and Hard Rock Hell Prog, and we were naturally on hand to photograph the whole shebang. Well, we say "we", when in fact we mean " Gary Wolstenholme  was on hand to photograph the whole shebang". And by that we mean The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Caravan, Hawkwind, H.E.A.T, Kip Winger, Magenta, Mostly Autumn, [...]

Something Else! Interview: Nik Turner, co-founder of Hawkwind

HAWKWIND - Master of the universe
Nik Turner, the sax-playing space-rock pioneer with Hawkwind, may be as busy as he's ever been. Fresh off a carnival-like series of appearances at South by Southwest, Turner's working on a new album, and will make several guest appearances on albums by the Prog Collective and William Shatner. Meanwhile, he's also the subject of a new biopic - the reason [...]

Hawkwind co-founder Nik Turner takes break from solo album to appear tonight with OHM

Hawkwind - Master of the universe (Spaceritual version)
Reedman Nik Turner of Hawkwind fame is making the most of his on-going trip to America, laying down tracks for new studio projects, making a series of appearances at SXSW and, tonight, appearing live with a former member of Megadeth. Chris Poland, part of Megadeth's influential first pair of albums, is welcoming Turner on stage at the Baked Potato in [...]

SXSW Review: Nik Turner, March 15, Rebels Honkytonk

SXSW Review: Nik Turner, March 15, Rebels Honkytonk Part of the fun of SXSW is taking in sets by bands in the weirdest venues possible. From restaurants to retail spaces, there's bands playing pretty much everywhere. And so on the Friday night of the festival, I found myself taking in a set of space rock courtesy of Nik Turner at a full on country bar with a mechanical bull and everything. And yes, I did see a patron riding that bull. She fell off, in case you were wondering. One of the most interesting aspects of this show (aside from the fact that Turner and [...]

Fascinatingly Bizarre Radio Ads for ’60s and ’70 Bands

Velvet Underground - Radio Ad
We were fascinated to see yesterday afternoon that Dangerous Minds' latest YouTube discovery was... a vintage radio ad for The Velvet Underground. Quite apart from the fact that the ad in question is weird as hell, we were amazed by the simple existence of such a promo for a Velvet Underground album, and the whole thing got us thinking: If Lou Reed et al were getting plugged on radio back in the day, surely there must have been other, similarly unexpected slots? Sure enough, looking for radio ads for '60s and '70s bands turns out to be one hell [...]

Ollo

Ollo Ollo is the alternative electronica duo of  Alex Crowfoot and  Lars Chresta from Sydney in Australia. Ollo This is one of those bands that has been sitting in my inbox for the best part of a year for no good reason. Sean Hocking from Metal Postcard Records  sent me over the what was then the unreleases LP Ape Delay , but time and tide, so it is with an apology for the delay that I [...]

Sunday Slaylist: Gone but not forgotten (2012 edition)

With the year beginning to draw to a close, and with only a bare handful os Sundays left for 2012 Slaylists, this week we're turning out attention to those we've lost in 2012. We're talking about the bands that have either broken up or gone on hiatus, as well as the more serious subject of musicians who sadly died at some point over the last 12 months. The first half of this week's Sunday Spotify Slaylist are bands that fall into those first two categories - bands that either finally [...]

John Harrison, Dead: Hawkwind Bassist Dies From Huntington's Disease at 69

Filed under: News , R.I.P. Facebook John Harrison, bassist and one of the founding members of influential British space rock band Hawkwind , died on May 26 after a roughly seven-year battle with Huntington's disease and just two days shy of seeing his 70th birthday. Although news of Harrison's passing is just being reported now, the band's official website made the announcement on May 29. According to Harrison's sister Franny, the musician [...]

Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (11th May)

Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (11th May) This weekend will be spent standing at the sea’s edge in Devon, in search of some little rays of sunshine, as daughter sprat and I take to the open road with Bing and little Span. Actually, it’s more likely that we will be spent dodging torrential rain showers and drinking a lot of coffee. Still, one can dream. Mass excitement in the small feminine corner of Mackerel Towers, as come Monday, I will be off to collect my very own silver fish mini racer. They are rather sweetly known as Doopers, but this has nothing, I stress nothing, [...]

............Onward.. .

Now here’s a lesson in longevity. All you bands who are patting yourselves on the back for having struggled on for ten years, prepare to be blown out of the water, because the subjects of this review have been at their trade for the best part of fifty summers; and in their case that has meant fifty years of psychedelic madness, frequently frightening festivals, debauchery, scandal, controversy

Concert Review: Ozric Tentacles, April 3, The Hoxton

Concert Review: Ozric Tentacles, April 3, The Hoxton At this past summer's Hellfest , I struck up a conversation with two Australians while waiting for Hawkwind to go on.  Now, of course, these guys knew nothing of Hawkwind and were only there to secure good spots for Kyuss Lives!, who were playing immediately afterwards, so I took it upon myself to educate them somewhat on what Hawkwind were all about.  As we spoke, a mysterious Norwegian emerged from the crowd, looking vaguely like a wizard with his long, whitish blonde hair and his hoodie pulled up over his head.  "If you like space rock," he said in [...]

Hawkwind - Leave No Star Unturned

Hawkwind - Leave No Star Unturned Easy Action Records in the UK have released some pretty incredible live recordings of The Stooges, Iggy Pop, MC5 and Sonic's Rendezvous Band the past few years and now they bring us this monumental live Hawkwind document. Leave No Star Unturned captures them in January 1972 headlining a show that also featured performances by the Pink Fairies and Syd Barrett at a venue called the Cambridge Corn Exchange. Pretty cool line up. I can only imagine how fried everyone was but their lids must have really flipped once Hawkwind blasted into their intro song "Technicians Of [...]

No Title

No Title Hawkwind - Hall of the Mountain Grill Its hard to understand sometimes how every college freshman owns a copy of Dark Side of the Moon and maybe a few even go so far as to throw in Yes or a little King Crimson, but Hawkwind fails to wind up on the recommended listening list. Hall of the Mountain Grill , widely considered one of the band's pinnacles at least as far as studio albums go, is perfectly positioned to nab the most ardent Floyd fans. Its a superb mix of [...]

Beavis & Butthead: Tastemakers

Beavis & Butthead: Tastemakers With Beavis and Butthead back on the air after nearly a decade-and-a-half hiatus, I thought I'd take a moment to offer my belated thanks to these two badly-drawn boys for turning me on to a couple of bands that otherwise would have escaped my attention. Even before MTV got out of the music video business, Beavis and Butthead were airing videos that would never have gotten any airplay via mainstream channels. Presumably channeling Mike Judge's musical tastes, Beavis and Butthead provided US viewers with the first glimpses of several well-below-the-radar bands including the Dead Milkmen, the Cramps, Daisy [...]

Concert Review: Wooden Shjips, November7, Horseshoe Tavern

Toronto - A few songs in to Wooden Shjips set at The Horseshoe, I remarked to a friend that it was the best thing I've seen since Hawkwind. Now obviously I've seen tons of great bands since, many just as good or perhaps even better, but nothing that had quite the same feel as when I caught the space rock masters in France last June .  My friend was equally impressed, but less versed in Hawkwind, but my opinion was validated by some random guy outside who made the same comparison.  They share a simlar vibe - spacey, droney, psych heavy [...]
