True Romance By Taylor K. Long This Valentine's Day, enjoy this collection of a handful of my favorite "love songs" and songs about love. Whether you are part of a duo or flying solo-remember this piece of advice: I kept asking Clarence why our world seemed to be collapsing and things seemed to be getting so shitty. And he'd say,"That's the way it goes, but don't forget, it goes the other way too." That's the way romance is... Usually, that's the way it goes, but every once in awhile, it goes the other way too. You can download the entire mix, here, or [...]

I do love me some Squidbillies . In fact, I love everything about the show except that it's on in the middle of the night when my old ass is hard at slumber. Anyway, if you're a fan of the show, you know damn well that the music is dazzling. And not only do you get twisted original songs performed by the show's voice talent (Unknown Hinson anyone?), but the creators have somehow managed to wrangle more than their fair share of bona fide musical celebs over the years, including such [...]

This Friday night set effectively set the tone for my New Year's weekend. It was raucous, relaxing, and poignant, shoving us into the new year with a bit of twang and grit - as if I didn't alre... Continue reading "Friday Night: Hayes Carll, Robert Ellis, and Shovels & Rope At House Of Blues" >

I guess I lose what little blogger cred that I have if I don't post an end-of-the-year "Best Of" list before 2012. I'm getting it in just under the wire. These are my favorite albums on this day, the 31st of December, in the year of our lord 2011, and it is subject to change whenever I feel like it. Seriously, it's been a great year for music, and it was really difficult for me to make this list. Feel free to heap praise on me or call me a pretentious overbearing wretch. [...]
Here is my highly-subjective, personal list of favorite albums of 2011. Wild Flag – Wild Flag | CD Vinyl MP3 Download "Romance" (mp3) Rarely do supergroups like this one meet their expectations. But the members of Sleater-Kinney, Helium, and The...
11. William Elliot Whitmore-Field Songs : Songs about working and struggling and grasping to the only piece of fucking dirt that yours and some SOB trying to cheat you out of it. Thanks WEW. I'm taking bullshit handyman work over the winter just so I can afford to eat Burger King and drink a couple of Miller High Lifes every once in a while, so I'm a disciple of these songs. I wonder what the farmers in Iowa do in the wintertime to survive. Is the suicide rate higher then? He's singing about [...]
Why 13, you ask? Well, it's my favorite number and, conveniently, it is also the number of albums that grabbed my attention this year. Plus, I like the title of "Lucky 133 for my list. 13. Ryan Adams - Ashes & Fire . This is the album I've turned to all year whenever I've been in the mood to chill. Perfect for sitting back with a bottle of scotch. (Sound pretentious enough?) On a side note, Ryan did a couple excellent covers of my music idol, Bob Mould, this year: Black Sheets of Rain (Live on [...]
This song comes off of Hayes most recent release. Despite the topic of this song, it wasn't off a Christmas album. Just a Christmas song on a regular album (an album that was one of my favourites of the year ). Christmas songs always make you a little sentimental, although that is usually just because you've heard the song a lot so you directly associate to previous times you've heard it. This song is new and original, but it makes me think of my family back home and the Christmas I'll be missing out on. It's probably [...]

Shirt of the Year: Brian Posehn's Exodus shirt, right, and the runner-up's "Cheap Ass Slayer shirt." (Click to enlarge) Is there anything worse than these "Best Of" and "Worst Of" lists around this time of year? How about endless re-posts of Christmas music? Ha ha. I know you're just kiddin'. Me too! But, ah, seriously ... there was a lot of good music this year and a handful of really good albums. We won't bore you with what we think is the best - we don't know ourselves - but here are some things [...]

Christmas and country music go together like peas and carrots. It's that time of year where Santa corrals up his steeds, puts on his spurs, and delivers presents to all of the good little cowpokes who have never heard of, much less seen, snow. Don't mind that flask of shine that Santa has stashed in his leather vest. It's hard work delivering present all over the world! And if you are an extra good little rocker, Santa may bring you a new steel gee-tar for Christmas. Yeee-Haw! Brenda Lee - I'm Gonna Lasso [...]

1 Band of Holy Joy How To Kill A Butterfly Wonderfully crafted the songs preach with a desolate beauty leaving behind plenty of food-for-thought I've listened and enjoyed some great music this year but none better than this album from Band Of Holy Joy which just stopped me in my tracks, but it doesn't end with the musical brilliance as the CD release is packaged beautifully too in a book format with wonderful original art work by Inga Tillere , for your chance [...]
If one understands the historical depth and context of the singer-songwriter tradition in Houston -- and it was flourishing here long before it migrated to Austin or before a few (mostly Texan) ... Continue reading "Robert Ellis, Hayes Carll Honored by American Songwriter Magazine" >
You gotta hear this band from Houston, Texas: the Sideshow Tramps. Made up of some of city's finest musicians, the band raises a raucous good time any place they set up. If you've only heard about Texas music but never really heard any, the Sideshow Tramps will be your wildest dream - and more. As the band's press release says: "The Sideshow Tramps exist for those who wish that the Sex Pistols, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin had formed a band together with Bob Dylan and Tom Waits." I saw them open last year for the Texas Tornados, and [...]
