Welcome to FWBA's best-of 2011. This has been such a meaningful year in music to me that it's tough to represent in one post. I'm going to be honest, this took me quite a long time. I wanted to do this year justice because personally, it was a total dream: living in San Diego working with some of my favorite artists, going to SXSW and Lollapalooza, seeing Dave Bazan in stranger's living rooms, Feist play a hometown show, saw tune-yards electrified show at Soda Bar clocking in as one of my favorite performances, watching Zach Rogue and my boyfriend playing [...]

My friend Landon Speers makes music under the name Headaches. He just sent over two tracks- Success/Ribbons. You know, I really hope someone gives ME a success ribbon one day. Headaches' sonic exploration never bores- there's always some new layer being added, whether it sounds sleepy or assaulting, it's got it's own personality and sense of direction. Success gradually develops into something more intricate towards the end of the track, is that supposed to be a metaphor or sumfin? Headaches- Success

GT favs Hunters have a brand new 123 EP, the digital of which is out now via Aagoo Records . The EP is entitled Hands on Fire , and it totally rocks. This here is the promo mp3 from Hands on Fire . My friend Landon Speers creates audio soundscapes under the moniker, "Headaches". He just released an album called, "I Wasn't Born Yesterday" via Basic Sounds . He creates gorgeously arranged compositions that are spacious and ambient, with sounds that build and swell under a bed of muffled static- creating that warm nostalgic quality. I was pretty excited to discover a 12 minute piece he made with Katie Lee of Braids called "Mother". With layered vocals, it sort of just glides on with no direction. It's almost suspenseful, as [...]

Qmusic's back with a new tune. This is very much in the cinematic electronic vein of QtheSuit. Qmusic - Another Headache Blurb: I like music. Not a certain style(s). I like music as it is in all it's forms. I write music in my recording Q'dio in Leicester, and I do it all for fun. Currently writing music with 'the Suit' from Cov calling ourselves 'QtheSuit'. I'm from Nuneaton, lived in Beduff, Hinckley and Cov. Worked with Decatone for 3 years doing live sound/remixing/recording. Also mixed and mastered tracks for 'The Suit [...]

I never expected to start a concert review with a Ghandi quote, but alas– "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians." When I heard that Matt & Kim were coming to Cat's Cradle several months ago, I was stoked. Though I was less than impressed by their most recent release of Sidewalks , who wouldn't want to hear "Daylight" performed live? Better yet, The Hood Internet were opening. I spent far too many high school nights (and if I'm honest, college nights too) driving around blasting mashups like " Billie [...]

Of late, I've been listening to a lot of pseudo-electronic music. Stuff that borders on chillwave, throwbacks to new wave but with an electronic twist, a lot of it European-influenced, most of it with a nerdy edge to it that's walks the threshold between awkwardness and the invariably cool. Stuff that can, in a way, be adequately described as psychedelic ambiance. This is the first of a few podcasts to fit this mold so you can think of it as part one, as that's precisely what it is - the playlist grew and grew until I simply [...]

Headaches + Foxes in Fiction = untitled (pt. i) Coming back from the rush of excitement that SXSW was, I am thrust back into brutal reality. Luckily, this piece of music came at just the right moment. Suppressing the stresses of my life, and sustaining my breath just long enough to not drown. But seriously, this collaboration between experimental genius Landon Speers and Foxes in Fiction ’s Warren Hildebrand was a match made in [...]

A while ago, I thought it'd be a good idea to put a cap on friendships, and cease all new ones, seeing as I was having a horrible time trying to keep in touch with the old ones. In the case of Landon Speers I made a sweeping exception, if only because I've been spending most nights on his futon, hiding from the mouse that has taken residency in his home, underneath his foul-smelling blanket. We also seem to share a friend by the name of GOBBLE GOBBLE , an even more elusive artist. I'm joking about the friends, [...]
Now that google.buzz exists, and facebook to boot, I think I'll start posting some things to this old blog every now and then. Since facebook is a good place to post how much I'm enjoying whatever it is that I'm currently eating, and google buzz is a convenient way to let all my friends on gmail know what's up without sending a mass email, skulls across america dot blogspot is going to turn into a real time archive for my recordings. In the past I've just uploaded things to http://www.mjmst74.com/skulls- across-america/index.html, but I've got a batch of [...]
The Gifthorse - 'Awake and Waiting' (mp3) www.myspace.com/thegifthorseba nd The Gifties are one of my favourite Brisbane bands, so of course they're breaking up on Saturday. I'm a bit bummed to tell you the truth - their final single 'Awake and Waiting' gave hints of a band keen to look in new directions, but perhaps they feel they've done their dash. The good news is that they've rounded up a bunch of mates and split into two new bands. It's cheap and easy to draw comparisons [...]

Apart from Northwestern Reisling, American wines, especially red, are our least favorite. But, Falling Feather seems to have changed that. Aside from the fact that it is beautifully packaged, this Californian product is low on histamine and tannins, which means you are less likely to develop a headache. Lovely package, don't you think? my power is about to go out because of this crazy thunderstorm. lights are flickering on and off as we speak. i can't say much besides j. cole is the future of hip hop, plain and simple. his flow is way too veteran status...somebody get him a deal. oh wait, he just got one. from (arguably) the best rapper alive. produced by the homie elite out of NY. the two together are something like siegfried and roy. except nobody will get mauled by a tiger in the end. no disrespect. [...]

CAT Scan: X-rays revealing my innermost In an hour, I leave for a CT Scan. I'm nervous; it's the unknown that pricks my concern. I've been suffering from sporadic migraines for several years, only they've progressively gotten worse and more prolonged. I hope for some answers, or at the very least release from the pain.
