The newest entrant in Bears and Bullet 's Our Newest Obsession series comes from the Paper Crane Collective , who enlightened me to Heads on Sticks , a Raleigh, North Carolina group that could be called anything from crystal electro-pop to modern psychedelic symposium. And maybe that's the perfect reason to catch on to the group - there's nothing that quite categorizes what they do. Their latest album Mocking Bird is available for free download at the group's Bandcamp . Grab a copy or listen below. [...]

Way back during the formative period of the Paper Crane Collective, I signed on to feature a monthly mix called Something for Later . The name of the mix came from a folder I use for tracks that didn't quite make it into the Dadada's monthly mix ( Blogophilia ) or something that was a little unusual deemed for a different kind of mix. Well, my hard drive is full of mp3s in folders marked Something For Later . Making a mix from these folders was an easy decision. This month's mix features tracks posted to our blogs and others [...]

It's Friday, and we have the latest from Heads on Sticks (aka David Mueller), Mockingbird . This LP blends elements of psychedelia, and hip hop to make and the most accessible recording from Mueller. The Raleigh-based musician also plays in the super cool, Birds of Avalon (seriously, check them out-a great band). He's offering another LP, The Pamphleteer , and the Oak City Version EP for free as well. Check out: Heads on Sticks - Lady's in the Lake [...]

Get your socks on! The 28th and 29th is going to be a music packed weekend! A new warehouse for music and art is opening up in downtown Raleigh called Moving Island . Moving Island is a community education facility focused on emerging arts, empowering technology, and the business of living. Top founders include Chris Riddle, Adam Crane, Maria Albani, and Kelly Crisp. A couple of these kids are going to join me in the station on Friday the 28th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Be sure to tune in! [...]

With New Year's Eve looming, the good folks at Denmark Records are doing their bit by offering up a mighty nice collection of emergent southeastern electronic music, free of charge. DenFriends features 19 artists from the losing side of the Mason-Dixon line, and promises a blips and beats buffet that is "hazy, heavy, chilled-out, adderall-injected and sexually frustrated." And it's free . Most of the artists on DenFriends will be unfamiliar to the casual Yankee listener, but [...]

This week's batch of .mp3s starts off with Superchunk , who will release their latest, "Majesty Shredding," on Sept. 14. But the real big news here is that the band will be on Jimmy Fallon on Sept. 20, their first TV appearance since 1994! Here's "Digging for Something" from the new CD. "Digging for Something" by Superchunk Next up is the new single from Embarrassing Fruits , whose CD "Frontier Justice" will be out on Trekky Records on Sept. 17. Their CD-release show is [...]

April was the worst month in a year for Swan Fungus. Only 29,000 page views. What am I doing wrong? Am I not being brazen enough with my fuck-the-world attitude? Should I break the law somehow? Look, I'm not going to lie. I'm not surprised that my numbers have dwindled in recent months. I'm working more, I haven't gotten to take any fun day-trips in a while, and - let's face it - I'm just not as funny today as I was six months ago, when Swan Fungus had its best month of all time (47,000 views). I could go [...]
