Frank Yang There's many great things about the long-running Toronto institution of Nu Music Nites at the Horseshoe - not least of all the fact that they're free - but the fact that they often feature such random assemblages of acts that each set can feel like its own standalone show and not part of a larger bill is certainly a big part of the fun. Such was the case on Tuesday night when rather than one headline-calibre act, as you'd normally be fortunate to have, they had two - and quite markedly different ones at that. [...]

Sorry for the slacking lately. Lots going on away from the Interweb these days so unfortunately Meatysauce is the middle child. Here is a double dose of some songs that I have been listening to a bunch over the past few weeks. Some are new, some are old but as always, all are special. Enjoy. I'm over at Gold Soundz at the moment, taking a listen to the new song "Dangling In the Aether" by Toronto band Heartbeat Hotel . Head to their bandcamp to hear another called "Downhill", both from a new 12″ EP out on November 26th called Intae Woe. Great timing on this, they're that band I'm always wondering whats next from. Toronto folk, lets go to their release party at The Silver Dollar Nov. 26th.

Facebook What: Out Of The Box Music & Arts Festival - a new mini-festival spread out over three days and seven shows and showcasing some of the region's best up-and-coming acts Why: Because it's the August long weekend (even though it's in July), because each show features art vendors and potentially entertaining themes (3D! Origami!), because there's all-ages matinee shows and because it's a lot of music for not a lot of money Who: Olenka & The Autumn Lovers , Heartbeat Hotel , [...]

He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg. Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor. Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you. (It's a summer jam, of sorts.) [ mix cover image by Marcus Claesson ] July 2011 Mix [...]
Now that Toronto's NXNE festival is all wrapped up, audiophiles like me can finally return to the realm of recorded music where everything sounds way fucking better. I love a live concert as much as the next person, but when artists are part of a long, schedule sensitive line up and therefore only have about 1.9 minutes to plug in and tune up never mind properly whip through sound check before hand, it's likely their sets are going to sound kinda poopy. Sympathy in such scenarios is scarce, but due. I didn't see Heartbeat Hotel when they played [...]

The Gainesville, Florida experimental/visual dyad, Hear Hums , embarked on a three week long tour in support of their latest release, Psyche Cycles , leading them to their very first gig in Toronto. Their debut performance was preceded by a heap of young T.O. talent: Blood Rexdale & The Walls Are Blonde , Heartbeat Hotel , and the choice Rebel artist Foxes in Fiction . Charlie Hoppner , Alex Wagstaff, and Chris North tackled Studio 561 from several angles before coupling their footage together to afford [...]

Heartbeat Hotel 's "Windowsill 13 is taken from the album "Fetus Dreams". The music video is a collaboration of Istoica , Mary Gerretsen and James Cooper. Very well visualized!
Heartbeat Hotel - Windowsill #1 It took me a few minutes to figure out if this song was a cover or not - it has that air of homeyness and comfort that you feel when you're wearing your favorite sweater. I love how the horns come in at the end like a father's soothing and protective voice. These Toronto-based dream pop aficionados have some super creative friends, too - this video is incredible - hyper-stylish. Bravo! See this track on their recent album Fetus Dreams . They've [...]

Heartbeat Hotel - "Windowsill 13 Video / Free Album Download I see you, but you won't come back. You accidentally turned around and it's summer, flies bumping into each other. I did not say anything. There was no choice, nothing decided, and you became an heirloom somewhere. We must resist. We must refuse to disappear .

"Windowsill 13 by Heartbeat Hotel , from the album Fetus Dreams . The video came together via a collaboration of istoica ( istoica.com ), Mary Gerretsen and James Cooper and it looks fantastic. Glad I've got another reason to post about this great song (previously I included it on Aux.tv's Class of 2010 ). Heartbeat Hotel - Windowsill 1 from istoica on Vimeo .

Frank Yang I will be the first to admit I don't do nearly as good a job of keeping track of worthy up and coming local and/or Canadian bands as I'd like, generally taking an "if they're worth hearing I'll hear them eventually" approach and deferring to great local and national sites with a homegrown focus like I Heart Music , The Take , Singing Lamb and Herohill to do the legwork and put worthy new Canuck talent on my radar. Showcasing said talent is the mandate of the Unsigned [...]

" Love is always important. Any artist naturally draws inspiration from love or lack there of... our music is no different... " - Matt Michell, Heartbeat Hotel My interview with Heartbeat Hotel is now up on BlogTO . I want to thank everyone in the band - Andy Smith, Chris Lyons, David Connolly and Matt Mitchell – for everything. Heartbeat Hotel 's Southern Souls session was shot by Mitch Fillion at Magpie (831 Dundas St. West), where [...]

I first listened to Heartbeat Hotel 's full-length album Fetus Dreams and CoughDrops EP while waiting to depart from the Las Vegas airport, gazing out at the big windows at the desert landscape, past the mountains and the blinking lights. Like Frank Yang ( Chromewaves ) theorized in his introduction to Heartbeat Hotel , I also thought the band's 2010 LP Fetus Dreams was the best free downloadable record to come out last year. Heartbeat Hotel mixes organic and electronic instrumentation along with shoegaze vocals, creating the kind [...]

It's windy outside and I'm out of words. Below, I posted some artwork and tried to pair each one with a particular song. Tomorrow, I'll create my ninth mixtape that will include all these songs. I'll also be posting my latest interview with Toronto shoegaze band Heartbeat Hotel . You will also find that I've included links to selected videos for a couple of the songs below. Enjoy and have a lovely weekend! Untitled procedural drawings 1/3 by A.N. [...]

Samantha Cardow With festivals come hard choices, and for this year's edition of Canadian Musicfest , getting underway with a handful of events tonight and in earnest as of tomorrow, I am choosing to eschew the club-hopping-ness that typically comes with these sorts of fest and largely plant myself in one place for each evening. Hard choice or lazy choice? A little of both. But just because I am staying put doesn't mean that I recommend others do the same. So by way of festival preview, here's a list of stuff that [...]

For those keeping up you may remember I put up a post about the Heartbeat Hotel album Fetus Dreams a few months back, came to the conclusion it was a mixed bag, a band who couldn't quite decide what direction they were taking are they making Fleet Foxes harmonious folk or Deerhunter garage indie or Animal Collective layered electronics? Hedging their Pitchfork bets. Their latest release ' Cough Drops EP ', released just before xmas, shows a bit of direction and a spark in what got me all [...]
