Words by Rick Moslen We at Draw Us Lines care! You spend summer days watching friends swim, picnic, and tan in the happy sun while you remain at home with a broken heart from a lost relationship crumbled into yesterday’s rotting garbage. Hang in there-you’ll make it through this. To prove our greatest concern, let’s write a prescription for your sad soul: a break-up mix! The only music mix more meaningful than an “I think I really dig you” compilation is an “I think I hate your fucking guts” mix. [...]

So, the photos from Friday night's drinking extravaganza arrived in my inbox this morning and I'm itching to share some with you. I would have liked to share more, but one friend has already cried mercy and begged me to delete various pictures from existence on the condition that if I don't, she'll kick my ass. Too bad. You would've loved 'em. That said, here are a few choice examples that I think epitomize the drunken shit-show that was Christmas Eve. I described on Saturday a bit of what occurred, but this should help clarify for those of [...]
From the band's last album before Elliott Smith became a household name on his own. The boys left on a high note, as Mic City Sons is full of their finest work as a group.

This is my new favorite saying: 'Tis better to be right half the time than half right all the time. All told, I'd say I hit it about 50% of the time, meaning half the time I'm spot on and clicking on all cylinders and the other half, well, not so much! Heatmiser -- "Half Right" mp3 off Mic City Sons ( buy ) Amy Annelle [...]
"What the fuck," You ask? "What the fuck," I respond. Because I didn't post a single downloadable MP3 this weekend for you starving masses yearning to blur the line between fair use and copyright infringement, I'll devote tonight's entry entirely to MP3s. In fact, I won't type another word for fear that you will arrive at my doorstep brandishing pitchforks and torches and a battering ram. Enjoy your fucking mix tape you fiends. RULES for uninitiated noobs : I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods [...]

farewell and adieu to you fair spanish ladies, farewell and adieu to you ladies of spain, for we've received orders for to sail back to boston, and so nevermore shall we see you again. croaked old quint in jaws. and now dear readers it’s time for me to take out my teeth, flash my scars one last time and go hurtling knife in hand towards the gaping maw of that deadly great white… interesting as this writerly venture has been (mostly…), consider it somewhatofa psychological barometer of the past few years. for me anyway. ![Flashback: Elliott Smith and Heatmiser in 1996 [Video]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2398930_lg.jpg)
Two new Elliott Smith reissues are on the way next month, so now is as good a time as any to point to a rare, recently-unearthed interview from a pivotal time in the late singer-songwriter’s career. Dead Melodies posted this Q&A and music video feature with Smith’s first post-High School rock band, Heatmiser, which they believe was filmed on January 1, 1996 in Portland, Oregon. Though I’m not entirely sure their date is correct, the year is what makes this most compelling: Smith had already released two solo albums on indie labels, at this [...]
by chuck bell When it comes to Dead Bands, there are very few that fit their title as appropriately or as literally as Heatmiser . Having met at Hamsphire College in 1991, Elliott Smith and Neil Gust began playing together at local clubs. Following their graduation, they moved back to Portland, OR, and formed a full band, taking their name from a villain in the 70's claymation movie, The Year Without a Santa Claus. With Brand Peterson on bass and Tony Lash on drums, the band recorded their first [...]

Today, after work, I’m leavin’ on a jet plane, and I think this song is the modern and more abstract angsty 90s indie equivalent of “Leaving on a Jet Plane” for me. I’m off to Ann Arbor and Chicago, to see friends get married, eat brunch at Zola and be with my moms (I’ll explain later). Four good things to know about Heatmiser: 1. Elliott Smith was in Heatmiser, before he was “Elliott Smith.” 2. Sam Coomes was in Heatmiser, only slightly after he started as the frontman for Quasi. 3. They’re not “metal.” 4. [...]
1. Heatmiser - Mic City Sons (1996) Everyone has one album they guarantee. One album they recommend to all their friends. One album they swear that you will like. But what people don't realize is that that "guarantee" is a definitive statement about their musical prowess. Using a mediocre album as a "guarantee" can permentally damage their musical opinion in the eyes of others. In college
Fastbird has three upcoming shows. The above is a flier for their show September 13th at The Charleston in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, USA. If you are in Portland, Oregon you can catch them at Kelly's Olympian on Saturday. And August 26th they will be playing at Glasslands which is again in Williamsburg. Here are some songs by Fastbird. Dance Monkey [...]

i didn't pay any attention to this album when it originally plopped through my mailbox. purportedly dismissed by elliott smith as being "too loud", i think that's a little unfair; it still has some beautifully miserable touches to make his later fans happy. released in 1996 by caroline. i'm only happy when it rains.
My daughter turns 3 this week. Here are her favorite songs: 1. Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac (has the whole song memorized) 2. ABC - The Jackson 5 (thinks Michael Jackson is just a little boy) 3. Lolly, Lolly, Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here - Schoolhouse Rock (timeless songs) 4. I'm Mr. Heat Miser - The Heat Miser (even though she's jewish...she loves the xmas songs) 5. I'm Mr. Snow Miser - The Snow

Like every other music site from here to Tucson Arizona, I will attempt, feebly at best, to keep you interested with my best of the best list.. TOP Records of the Year: 18. You Should Know Four years ago today Elliott Smith died in his Los Angeles home from an apparent suicide (although the circumstances surrounding his death have been questioned since). He left behind a rich catalog of music and a throng of grieving fans. Smith's musical career began after he graduated from Hampshire College in Massachusetts in 1991. His band Heatmiser moved to Portland to pursue a full-time musical career. After three full-length albums, Heatmiser broke up in 1995, and Smith had already begun [...]

As some of you know, Heatmiser , was Elliott Smith 's band, when he wasn't recording solo material. On my way home from having coffee with my friend Wes this morning, this song came on. I realized it is my favorite Heatmiser song that Elliott doesn't sing on. Check it out... Heatmiser - Why did I decide to stay? "add me to the list you stopped with blanks or how about a rundown of the top 100 where do i rank did i even [...]
