Violent Success
When it comes to live performance, it is hard to know what to expect with various artists. Some bands just have it and can effortlessly light up a stage and energize a crowd whereas some fail to deliver that magic. There is also the element of sound. There are so many instances where a band will sound a certain way on an album or EP, but upon seeing them live, they sound completely different. Split between Austin and Greenpoint (Brooklyn), Captured Tracks signee Heavenly Beat (led by Beach Fossil's John Peña) shows this geographical dichotomy in its sound. The band's serene and spacious melodies are rendered in a semi-claustrophobic way in their electro-orchestral arrangements. There's definitely something heavenly at work here, but the heaven in question, rather than an angelic explosion of fanfare, is crammed in a small Greenpoint bedroom where a few musicians quietly record their imaginative songs.
