Tuesday night's show at Rickshaw Stop featured Brooklyn dream pop tour buddies Small Black and Heavenly Beat with an opening set from San Francisco/Los Angeles based duo Silver Hands . All three bands were impressed by the turnout and happy to be playing in San Francisco. It was a relatively early show, with Silver Hands starting their set at 8:45pm. Singer Elizabeth Wright was in rare form, emphasizing the fact that her birthday was at midnight. As one of the [...]

all photos by Eric Gonzalez Alfaro Brooklyn indie synth rock band Small Black stopped by Seattle this past weekend in support of their great new record Limits of Desire (you can grab the lead single "Free At Dawn" from our Song of the Day podcast here ). With Limits of Desire , Small Black grow the fuzzy enveloped psychedelia of their well-loved 2010 LP New Chain into an expansive, emotionally engrossing world. As we witnessed Saturday, with it comes a new chapter in Small Black's live show, shooting [...]

When it comes to live performance, it is hard to know what to expect with various artists. Some bands just have it and can effortlessly light up a stage and energize a crowd whereas some fail to deliver that magic. There is also the element of sound. There are so many instances where a band will sound a certain way on an album or EP, but upon seeing them live, they sound completely different. I can gladly say that Monday night Small Black made their way to Schubas Tavern in Chicago and they did not disappoint. [...]

Hmmm.. Beach Fossils seem to have ran the course of their songwriting and be stuck on an infinite loop, as evidenced by their new album Clash the Truth . I love these guys to death but to be honest I have heard every one of these songs before on their past records and I'm a bit bored - it didn't even work for me as background music. Not sure how much of any of this album was written by John and Cole but seeing as how Heavenly Beat and DIIV are killing it right now, it's no [...]

by Andrew Sacher Imperial Topaz at The Stone - 2/3/13 (photo by Jen MacDonald) Brooklyn ambient pop duo Imperial Topaz made their live debut in NYC at The Stone over the weekend (2/3). If you went, how was that? If you missed it, or want to see them again, you can catch them in Brooklyn at 285 Kent on March 8 with Small Black , ex-Beach Fossils project [...]

Beach Fossils will release their second album 'Clash The Truth' on February 19 via Captured Tracks . The record's second single ' Careless ' was posted online this week. The Brooklyn trio have churned through line-up changes (reportedly more than ten drummers) since frontman Dustin Payseur recorded the Beach Fossils debut three years ago. In July bass player John Pena also moved on, he's now focusing on his band Heavenly Beat . Meanwhile guitarist Zachary Cole Smith is still playing with Beach Fossils along with his ever growing side project DIIV . Captured Tracks are offering a free download [...]

What a week we have in store! Though there are loads of great bands in town, it's Lord Huron we're most excited to see. With their debut full-length finally hitting shelves this week, they're is visiting our fine city to celebrate with shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan. If you can't make it to one of their shows, try and catch Perfume Genius with Dusted on Tuesday or The Mountain Goats with Matthew E. White at Music Hall of Williamsburg on either Saturday or Sunday. Enjoy this beautiful week [...]
Hard not to want to take at least one more glimpse at summer with Heavenly Beat's "Tradition" providing backdrop. The song is found on the album, Talent , out on Captured Tracks. http://capturedtracks.com

Split between Austin and Greenpoint (Brooklyn), Captured Tracks signee Heavenly Beat (led by Beach Fossil's John Peña) shows this geographical dichotomy in its sound. The band's serene and spacious melodies are rendered in a semi-claustrophobic way in their electro-orchestral arrangements. There's definitely something heavenly at work here, but the heaven in question, rather than an angelic explosion of fanfare, is crammed in a small Greenpoint bedroom where a few musicians quietly record their imaginative songs. Heavenly Beat has a few singles uner its belt, the latest - entitled "Messiah," is streaming below. They'll be playing at Webster's Marlin [...]
This week is going to be a doozie! Though the past few weeks have also been filled with memorable shows, it's been a while since I've seen quite this many of my favorite bands in town all at once. Bon Iver (playing 4 nights at Radio City Music Hall), Wye Oak , Field Mouse , Oberhofer , Efterklang , Dr. Dog (with Kishi Bashi ), Austra , The Echo Friendly , the list just goes on and on. Even more, this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, there's a [...]

How is it that Heavenly Beat still feel fresh despite forming in the latter part of 2009? Perhaps it's something to do with the fact that other than his 7" single debut 'Suday', John Pena, who is Heavenly Beat, has rarely ventured outside of his bedroom. Being left unmoved and uninfluenced by the outside world seems to have paid off for the Texan, allowing him to make both humungous strides in the Blogosphere and an impression on an ever-respondent proletariat. Riding a wave of momentum insinuated by the success of singles 'Suday' and 'Faithless', Pena decided that it [...]
