Looking through my Tumblr timeline I saw a post on MFR that St. Louis based Volcanoes and Afternoon Records had decided to release their debut album Heavy Hands for free…that's right, free ninety nine. Last year, when posting up the Volcanoes track "A Knife In The Dark" I said: Dark chocolate. That's what I hear when I listen to "A Knife In The Dark" by Volcanoes. It's rich, it's decadent, and it might make you a little fat. It could also make you ahead of the curve on [...]

One of my absolute favorite new bands, Volcanoes , have released their debut album, Heavy Hands , today for free on Afternoon Records . These St. Louis-ers sure know how to kick ass, download their album for free here .

Dark chocolate. That's what I hear when I listen to "A Knife In The Dark" by Volcanoes. It's rich, it's decadent, and it might make you a little fat. It could also make you ahead of the curve on this band from St. Louis. Volcanoes bill themselves as a drum and bass duo, but what they do sounds more like a train derailing at high speeds with a rock band on board. It's awesome. Heavy Hands will be out in the near future via Afternoon Records . Facebook | [...]

The Woodlands - Can We Stay Here (Heavy Hands remix) The Woodlands are a husband / wife duo from Portlandia that released a gorgeous self titled debut back in 2009. Fast forward two years, and a handful of those tracks are getting the remix treatment from Heavy Hands… with sexy results. Their debut album was filled with the kind of breathless, sparse arrangements that seemed like the perfect fit for someone to come and make something new with them. And that is exactly what happened. [...]

I went to Pistils garden store on Mississippi this weekend and picked out some little plant pod friends to hang in my windows. I got inspired and also ended up building a terrarium in a giant flower vase that i never use. And Canup also sent up some plant clippings to get me going in the greenery department. Bachelor Tex will endeavor not to kill. Heavy Hands - No. 6

The more I start to think about which albums I enjoyed the most in 2008, the more daunting the whole idea becomes. And with each new day comes the realization that there was a ton of really good music released this year that I either haven't listened to yet, or am totally unaware of. This debut album from Heavy Hands is a perfect example of the latter. I had never even heard of this band until a few days ago, but I'm already putting Smoke Signals into consideration for my best-of '08 list. The music this [...]

At first listen most would probably flag the derivative card at Heavy Hands and call it a day. They evoke late 70's proto-metal to the very core. Where they pull into their own right is that they do it so completely and so convincingly within the aesthetics of that certain place and time that it blows away so many acts today who simply throw Blue Cheer in as a reference point in their liner notes. Heavy Hands' debut album Smoke Signals could easily be pressed to vinyl, beat up and slipped in amongst a few second tier 70's [...]
