I'll be frank. I'm that girl that sometimes judges a band by its name. I look at the concert calendars for all the Cleveland venues and if I'm not going to enough shows for the week, I take a stab at something new. More often than not, this works out in my favor. (Thank you, music gods, for sparing me from many a terrible band.) This is how I stumbled upon The Heavy Pets . Hailing from South Florida, The Heavy Pets are "a homegrown [...]

[photo courtesy of Nick Irving ] We spoke last about the concept that "jam band" can be seen in some circles as a pejorative term. What separates The Heavy Pets from other bands lazily tagged with this unfortunate label is that each member of this band possesses obvious talent and the unit as a whole is impressive from the first note. When they were selected from among 350 contestants to play the Langerado Music Festival in 2006, The Heavy Pets took off on a trek that has brought them nothing but accolades (everyone [...]

As POPPED! Music Festival quickly approaches, I'm trying to get up on some of the different acts performing during the two day event down at FDR Park. Dead Confederate is not one of the performers I need to brush up on or check out. I've been a fan of these guys since the first time I heard frontman Hardy Morris scream the opening lines to "Heavy Petting". Rumor has it DC will be performing a Neil Young cover set at POPPPED, but I am hoping that is mixed in with some original material. Either way, they'll [...]
One of the music festivals that can often get overlooked amidst a sea of the bigger OSL's and ACL's of the world is the upstate New York gem known as Catskill Chill Music Festival . We've written about the festival in the past and would be remiss to not mention this mini-festival again in 2011. This year's lineup is stacked with some jamband middleweights like Umphrey's McGee, but following right behind are the untz-Bisco stylings of Conspirator and the Dead-based nostalgia funk thing called 7 Walkers (with the Grateful Dead's Bill Kreutzmann at [...]

We keep our eyes peeled for new tour dates announcements each week and compile them on Tuesdays for this handy column… While still remaining active over the last few years, via festival appearances and curated multi-day runs, String Cheese Incident haven't done any sustained touring since announcing a break from the road in 2007. Well, that's all about to change, as the venerable jam act has announced their Roots Run Deep tour , a 10-date East coast run that will kick off on November 25 at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in [...]

Pet Scenes From: London, United Kingdom London combo (I just love that word, don't know why I just do!) Pet Scenes have taken time out from single handedly saving music from the fakes, the posers and the over sexualised bump 'n grind merchants to talk, and possibly fib, to the Devil. The Devil : Why Pet Scenes? Pet Scenes : Because it is ambiguous and doesn't include "the" or [...]

Longtime HT faves the Felice Brothers have announced the details for the first round of 2011 tour dates. The upstate New York-based act will kick things off with a high profile appearance at SXSW on March 19, where they will play a showcase gig at the Auditorium Shores, that will feature Bright Eyes, Man Man and Middle Brother. The band will then head out for a cross-country headlining run, which will include their debut performance at Coachella, as well as their first-ever tour down under with dates scheduled in New Zealand and Australia. [...]

The Heavy Pets have teamed up with the legendary Charlie Miller to take care of their soundboard recordings. They are offering a free download of their 2010/12/04 show @ at Nectar's, Burlington, VT. Their self-titled studio album was pretty straight forward. These guys need to be on stage to cut loose with a prog rock jazzy vibe. Tracks: How Would I Sigismondi Chew 3 AM Tortugas Slow Down [...]

South Florida jamband The Heavy Pets have recently brought taper extraordinaire Charlie Miller on the road with them to record each show and help with production. The group aims to start selling Miller's official recordings through LiveDownloads.com and is offering free MP3 downloads of their December 4th show at Nectar's to give music fans a sample of Charlie's recording, mixing and mastering work. Check it out here . Here are six other bootlegs getting tons of play on my iPod... Paul [...]

Melodic rock from Florida about boys meeting girls. The Heavy Pets don't want the Summer to end on their self-titled album. The singer isn't afraid to try reaching the high notes (and failing), but it gives and edge to their smart borderline middle-of-the-road good time music. Make no mistake, their third, self-titled album has more styles than any hopeful in crappy talent show will ever be able to memorize, let alone reproduce. There are a free radio-friendly unit shifters like How Would I and Drenched , checkered shirts rawk (Jackie Bones) and [...]

For a first time festival site, Predaine in Freehold, NJ was a welcome oasis for the fans at PetZoo Festival 2010 . From easy entry allowing cars to drop off their camping gear - though they couldn't car camp - to a cheap air-conditioned bar on site and a grassy amphitheater, it seemed that festival goers comfort was given the utmost attention. And with many having taken the long drive up from Florida to join the Heavy Pets at their annual party, it's easy to understand why! [...]
It seems that every band out there is aching to throw a festival of their own and The Heavy Pets are no exception. After two succcessful years, the Pets' PetZoo Festival 2010 moves to Priedaine in Freehold, NJ for its third year - a private fairground owned by the New Jersey Latvian Society. The site boasts luxury accommodations including amphitheater seating at the outdoor stage, power throughout the camping areas and real bathrooms! The Heavy Pets first caught our attention playing downstairs from the [...]

While Yo La Tengo is taking the year off from their regular run of Hannukah shows, New Yorkers will still be able to celebrate the holiday with music as Matisyahu has announced the details for his fourth annual Festival Of Lights. The eight-show run, which will be split between Webster Hall and the Music Hall Of Williamsburg, will feature a diverse roster of opening acts which this year includes John Brown's Body , Brothers Past , Kid Koala and a rare appearance from RANA . Tickets for the entire run are [...]

John Coleman spent Labor Day Weekend at moe. down & filed this report... Warm days and cool nights illuminated by a harvest moon meant plenty of good vibes floating around moe. down 10 at Snow Ridge Ski Resort, in Turin, N.Y. The rustic locale is located just outside the southwestern boundary of the Adirondack Park, rising up among sleepy towns and farms. Similar to the Mountain Jam stage setup at Hunter Mountain in the Catskills, the main stage faces up a ski [...]
